There were only two deaths recorded in Chelmsford between 1984 and 1990. A George William Robinson in March 1985, Volume 9, Page 2330, whose date of birth was 4 Dec.1903 and a George in October 1989, Vol. 9, Page 2241, his date of birth was 14 May 1911. If either of these match yours then you can obtain a copy of the death certificate from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ The cost is £7 Sterling, including delivery. A death cert. gives you place and cause of death and the name of the informant who could be a close relative.
