Are there MI booklets for Bedfordshire &, if so, does anyone do lookups? I am searching for WILLIAM THOMAS SPOUSE, 72 years, who's death was registered 3/4 of 1947 in Biggleswade. Many thanks - Joan

Biggleswade registration district covers many parishes. Do you know in which parish he died?

Hi David - I've just received the following information about the death of William Thomas SPOUSE:

Coroner's Daily Record of Inquests for the north of Bedfordshire for June - Sep 1947 [ref.Co/Inq 1/4/N2] and this notes his death on 1st August 1947. It is noted that although his death was investigated by the Coroner no inquest was held and he was not a patient in any institution.

Apparently WTS was not buried in Biggleswade nor in Langford - this is all I know so far. The Archivist from Bedfordshire Library advises that they have the Monumental Inscription booklets there. From what you are indicating I take it that each parish has Monumental Inscription booklets?

Yes, each parish has it's own index; it's not a central index. So you need to know in which parish he was buried. I would start with his death certificate to get where he died.

Thank you David for the info re MIs. The search is proving to be more complicated. William Thomas SPOUSE's daughter Allison Joyce SPOUSE married George S. MILLS 4/4 of 1940 in Amersham, Bucks & his wife Alice Frances SPOUSE 78 yrs died 1/4 of 1957 also in Amersham so I am following this up on Bucks Message Board. I'm not sure whether MIs records are available for this time period? A few questions spring to mind - if WTS lived in Amersham with his wife, why was his death recorded in Biggleswade? He did not die in hospital there however there was a Coroners report but no autopsy - accidental death perhaps? Etc., etc. I still have much research left to do. My sincere thanks for your interest & help.

A seven quid investment in his death cert may clear up a lot of your questions about his presence in the Biggleswade area

Is seven quid the same as seven pounds? If so, where can I get a copy of the DC for that amount?

If this offer is only valid to residents in the UK then possibly I could have it mailed to a friend in Beds.

It's a bit confusing for this Canuck as GRO indicated a DC would cost me 25 pounds!!!

Yes, colloquial for pounds. Same as loonie. A certificate from the GRO costs seven pounds including airmail postage to anywhere in the world

You can order it online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ and pay by credit card. You will need to quote Sept quarter 1947, Biggleswade registration district, vol 4a page 60

It sounds as though you may have got hold of a commercial service, rather than the GRO, who quoted you the rip off price of £25, as even the priority super fast service at the GRO is only £23
