Have you checked the IGI at www.familysearch.org? There's a baptism of James Chivers on 6 Feb 1742 at West Challow, which is 8 miles from Harwell which might be worth looking at. Proving it will be hard though

Virtually all Beds baptisms pre 1813 have been extracted onto the IGI, but there are no James Chivers

David

hello, Dianne - I wondered if you'd got any further with the White family. I think now that there are two, probably unrelated, White families in Woburn at the end of the 18thC. One family, already there, with surname sometimes spelled Whyte: daughter Ann born 1770 didn't marry William Henley in 1805, but possibly married Robert Parker in 1789. Second family, from the Strand area of London (marriage and christenings in St Clement Danes) moved to Woburn around 1790-1800. Parents William and Lettice, daughter Ann Maria born 1785, married William Henley. Only hypothesis, but seems the best candidate. William and Ann's eldest son John married in 1838 in Brighton, aunt Lettice White was a witness, and later census data gives her birthplace as London St Clements. There are other possibilities but all likely cases involve a White family from London.

Would sks have access to the 1885 Kelly's Directory of Bedfordshire or similar? I'm looking for any entry for a Jeremiah Carr, gardener, in that time frame. I know his wife, Mary Ann, was buried in Milton Ernest Churchyard in Oct 1887 and I'm wondering if the family was living in the area in 1885. Jeremiah had been the Head Gardener at Delapre Abbey, Hardingstone, Northampton until at least 1882, then the family seemed to move around. Any assistance would be appreciated.

/Sue
Ontario, Canada

James and Elizabeth Procter were baptising children in Billington up to 1871. There were two Ann's born in Billington within a year or so of each other - the daughter of James and Elizabeth who in 1871 was still living with them aged 20, and the other Ann who in 1871 was aged 18 living with her mother and stepfather Bethuel Horne.

The big question must be who is the Ann Procter who married Charles Horn? It may take another marriage cert to establish her father's name

David

The birth certificate of one of her four children will give you Elizabeth's (in 1861 she was Eliza, not Elizabeth) maiden name.

For example, if you use www.freebmd.org.uk you'll find Arthur's birth registered in Leighton Buzzard registration district in the Sept quarter 1859 vol 3b page 388.

So James could have died at any time from the end of 1858 to March 1861, assuming Eliza was telling the truth when she described herself as widow, as opposed to her husband had done a runner and left her. But I can't see an obvious death on Freebmd.

Presumably you haven't got Ann's 1853 birth cert, otherwise you'd know her mother's maiden name. In which case how do you know Eliza's husband was James? I can't find a marriage that fits, but there's a Dec quarter 1846 marriage in Leighton Buzzard on Freebmd where William Procter and Eliza Botsford are on the same page. And in 1851 I can't find James and Eliza with daughter Laura, but living in Billington is William 36 b Eaton Bray; Eliza 27 b Edlesborough, and daughter Sarah 4 b Edlesborough. Could Sarh be a misenumeration for Laura? The three following children were all born in Billington. And there is a death of William Procter in the March quarter 1859 in Leighton Buzzard

I am beginning to smell rats about Eliza's husband being James! Only a birth cert will prove it one way or the other - father James or William, and Eliza's maiden name.

David

Hi David and Peggy

Thank you both so much for replying and for spending so much time doing some investigating! I got James from www.familysearch.org, on which it states Elizabeth as well, not Eliza. I think I'm going to have to order another birth cert and see what I can find out, it's so frustrating to get so far and then be at a dead end, that's why I thought I'd post and see if any of you wonderful people knew something I didn't!
I had seen the William and Eliza, but wasn't convinced this was Ann's parents, mainly because of this James I had found on familysearch.org.....

Thanks again for all of your help, I really appreciate it!

Kind regards

Kylie

James and Elizabeth PROCTER

Hi There

Today I finally received the birth certificate for Priscilla Horn (please see attached copy of certificate) on which I was hoping to establish who her parents were. The mother's maiden name looks like it's spelt Proctter, but records seem to come up with Procter, which isn't suprising. However, I'm hoping someone can provide me with some more information on the following:

Priscilla Horn's mother = Ann Proctter (Procter) born

* 26 Jun 1853
* in Billington, Bedfordshire, England

Priscilla Horn's father = Charles Horn born

* abt 1852
* in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, England

Ann Proctter's mother = Elizabeth born approximately 1824 in Eddlesborough, Buckinghamshire. In 1861 at the age of 37 she was a widow of James Proctter (of which I have no further information other than he died in approximately 1860, I got this from the 1861 census on which it states that Elizabeth is a widow, but has a one year old son - Arthur Proctter, therefore James must have died sometime between 1860 and 1861), she was a straw plaiter and a School Mistress. I cannot find Elizabeth's maiden name.

Ann and James Proctter had four children:

Ann Proctter (the one named above)
Laura (B. 1847, Eddlesborough, Buckinghamshire)
Sarah A. (B. 1857 Billington, Bedfordshire)
Arthur (B. 1860 Billington, Bedfordshire)

Does anyone know anymore about this family? Ideally I would love Elizabeth's surname and James's birth date / location.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thank you.

I noticed on your family tree that you have some of my ancestors from South Hylton listed i.e. James Brown b. 1814 - 1897 and his wife Isabella Humes 1814 - 1891. Although I am still trying to locate the parents of James Brown, I have traced the Humes line further back to Robert Holmes born before 1670. Some of this still needs some work to confirm accuracy. Is this of any interest to you?
Hi Tony,

Good to hear from you, I should imagine that we link somewhere along the line, as I said before both my Nan and Grandad were Worbey's before they were married, my Nan had i think 7 sisters and one brother, I think her brother died at aged about 6 or 7, he was run over by a bus. My Grandad had I think 7 or 8 brothers, and they were land owners, they had big orchards in Hitchin which were all sold off in the late sixties for housing, they had a big house where the fire station is now called orchard house which is now gone. It is my Grandad's side which I think is related to alfred, although my aunt's research show's that the two families are linked to two brothers about six or seven generations before. I will wait to see if you think we are related, and if you then need any other info my aunt knows the family history extensively!

I am searching for the cemetery where my great uncle was buried. He was WILLIAM THOMAS SPOUSE & he died in 1947 at the age of 72 years; registered in Biggleswade Sep quarter of 1947. He was not buried in Biggleswade Cemetery off Stratton Way, nor in Langford Cemetery, as these have been ruled out. Since there are numerous parishes in this Registration District I need to search the City &/or Town Directories to located where this family lived in order to narrow down my cemetery search. I live in Canada & was hoping someone might be able to advise me. Thanks - Joan

Hallo, I,m Ansje van Elburg from Holland. We lifed near Peter and Judith in the 60th. When they and we where just merried. We became close friend but lost contact. I think when they divorsed.I did'nt know that, by the way. They have a daughter Rachel born in Ommen Holland. Where Peter worked on an Internationel school. We where searching for theme because we where such good friends. But we found nothing till I remebered Judiht's name of birth was Kelf-Cohen. This day I Googled and found your message and I hope you can tell me a little bit more. And perhaps I can tell you something. I"m really happy to have found this. Many greetings from Ansje van Elburg

I also believe that there was a daughter, Rachel but cannot find a birth registration. Any information to confirm this would be appreciated.

Hi James,
Nice to hear from you. It certainly sounds promising. It`s always great to come across a new lead or branch of the family.
I`ll have a look at my Tree tomorrow when I`ve got some time and get back to you again. I do have 3 photos of Alfred, one of them with his son, Grandson and Great Grandson in a newspaper clipping.
If things do tie in I would love to have a copy of any old photos you may have and I would, naturally, send you what I have as well as the Worbey Tree (which is quite extensive) and copies of BMD certificates.

Will contact you again shortly,

Regards, Tony

Hi James,
Sorry not to have got back sooner. I have been working flat out with the builders etc to get the house finished. They have gone but I`m still painting and tying up all the loose ends.
It`s good to know that there is a definite link from Alfred. All my Genealogy stuff is packed in the attic out of the way while the mess is around. I`ll try and get round to going through the Worbey file over the next few days and promise to get back to you.
Do you have an email address so I can contact you direct rather than through the message board? You can email it to me for security at : ascrawley@yahoo.com
Regards,
Tony
