Hello hendresian,

The 1911 UK census shows that Eva Rowland had been married for 12 years to Henry Rolwland. The census also shows that Eva, in 1911, was 32 years old and born in Runcorn, Cheshire. Her husband Henry is listed as a 32 year old coal miner hewer, from Crewe, Cheshire. In the household with Eva and Henry are their five children, all born St. Helens, Lancashire. These are 12 year old Ethel; 10 year old Maud; 8 year old Charles Henry; 6 year old Frances; and 3 month old John. The family in 1911 are living in 35 Carter Street, St. Helens.

The 1911 census transcription is from the 1911census pay-as-you-go website at: http://www.1911census.co.uk/

I next looked for the General Register Office (GRO) birth indexes for Henry and Eva’s children, Ethel, MAUD, Charles, Frances, and John. GRO indexes can be accessed from the FreeBMD website at: http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

I found GRO indexes for what I believe to be all five of these children, though you would have to order each record from the GRO to confirm that the parents are Henry Rowland and Eva Jackson, as GRO indexes do not provide the names of the parents..

The index for Ethel shows her birth recorded in the Prescot (Lancashire) Registration District for the March quarter of 1899. The index follows:

Births Mar 1899

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

Rowland Ethel Prescot 8b 759

Ethel’s birth record can be found in Volume 8b, Page 759 of copies of the GRO registers. If you don’t have Ethel’s birth cert, you can order the record from the GRO website at: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

The least expensive method of ordering GRO certificates is to order them online, and by providing the Volume (8b), and Page Number (759), from the birth index you see above.

Before ordering certificates online, you will need to type in your email address and provide a password to log in to the site.

The GRO link to log onto the site can be found at: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

The cost of a certificate by ordering online is £7.00.

The birth certificate for Ethel should provide you with her date and place of birth, the names of her parents, and her father’s occupation. To see the range of information GRO birth, marriage, and death records may contain, go to Barbara Dixon’s website at: http://www.dixons.clara.co.uk/Certificates/indexbd.htm

The Prescot Registration District recorded births, marriages, and deaths for several towns and parishes in Lancashire, including St. Helen’s. A list of the towns and parishes in the Prescot district can be found in the GenUKI website link at: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/prescot.html

Below is the GRO birth index for MAUD Rowland. Her birth was recorded in the Prescot district for the December quarter of 1900. Her birth record can be found in Volume 8b, Page 739 of the GRO registers:

Next are the GRO birth indexes for Charles Henry, Frances, and John Rowland, all recorded in the Prescot district:

Beginning with the September quarter of 1911, GRO birth indexes included the maiden name of the child’s mother. I found three birth indexes of Rowland children whose mothers’ maiden name was Jackson. These could refer to the children of Henry Rowland and Eva Jackson. The children include Hannah (1911), James (1913), and John (1915).

Hannah was not in the 1911 census as she was born after that census was taken:

Next is the 1901 census transcription for Henry and Eva Rowland and their two children, living in an address of 29 Allanson Street, St. Helens, Lancashire. This enumeration shows that 21 year old Henry worked as a “coal drawer below ground,” and that he was born in Crewe, Cheshire. His wife, 21 year old Eva Rowland, is shown to have been born in Rucorn, Cheshire. The two children in the household, both born St. Helens, are 2 year old Ethel and her 6 month old sister MAUD. Also in the household is Henry’s 19 year old brother John Rowland, who was working as an apprentice sheet grease flattener. The household also includes a 24 year old boarder, James Makin, from St. Helens. The transcription below comes from the Ancestry.com subscription website. Unless otherwise indicated, all other census transcriptions in this reply will also be from Ancestry.com:

I then located the GRO marriage index for Eva Jackson and Harry/Henry Rowland. This index also contains the names of two other people, Margaret Barr and Robert Mather. The marriage of Eva and Henry was recorded in the Prescot district for the September quarter of 1898. Their marriage certificate can be found in Volume 8b, Page 1239 of the GRO registers:

Next, I looked for Eva Jackson in the 1891 census, and believe I found her living with her parents William and Mary, and her brother John, in an address of 59 Charles Street, St. Helens. Eva is shown to be a 12 year old scholar born in Runcorn, Cheshire. Her father William is a 60 year old general labourer born in Frodsham, Cheshire. Her mother Mary is 57, and also born in Frodsham. Her brother John, also born in Frodsham, is a 20 year old general labourer.

Below are what I believe to be the GRO birth indexes for William and Mary Jackson’s children, John and Eva.
Both of the births were recorded in the Runcorn Registration District. John’s birth was recorded in the June quarter of 1870, and can be found in Volume 8a, Page 205 of the GRO registers. Eva’s birth was recorded in the December quarter of 1879 and can be found in Volume 8a, Page 215 of the GRO registers:

Moving back in time in the census returns, I also located Eva and her family in the 1881 census living in an address of 119 Merton Bank Road, Parr, Lancashire. William and Mary Jackson have seven children in the household with them. Also listed is 24 year old Thomas Jackson, from Frodsham, Cheshire. He likely was William’s brother, as William is also shown to have been born in Frodsham.

The transcription below is from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at: www.familysearch.org:

Utilizing the names and ages of the Jackson children in the 1881 census, I looked for the GRO birth indexes for Sarah Ellen, Anne, Rodger, Claire, Ade, and Eve Jackson. Sarah Ellen, Anne, and Rodger are shown to have been born in Frodsham, Cheshire. Frodsham was in the Runcorn Registration District. I believe I located the birth indexes for all these children, except for a child named Anne. I did however find a GRO birth index for a Hannah Jackson. This may pertain to Anne. I also found a GRO birth index for a “Clara” Jackson, rather than a Claire Jackson, and a GRO index for an Ada Jackson, rather than “Ade.”

The indexes follows:

You’ll notice that the index for Ada, just above, lists two page notations in Volume 8a where the birth can be found, indicated by “22,” and “[35].” This means the volunteer at FreeBMD who transcribed the index didn’t know if Ada’s birth was in Page 223 or Page 225 in Volume 8a. The FreeBMD and Ancestry.com websites both provide access to copies of the GRO registers. I found the index for Ada Jackson and enlarged it. The page number in Volume 8a where her birth can be found is 225.

Because Eva had brothers and sisters several years older than herself, I knew members of her family would be found, before she was born, in the 1871 and 1861 census enumerations. I looked for William and Mary Jackson and their children in the 1871 census and found them living in Sewell Street, Runcorn. The oldest child in the household is 15 year old Ralph Jackson, who like his father, worked as a labourer and was born in Frodham. Six of Ralph’s siblings are in the household, along with a cousin, 21 year old labourer Joseph Davies, from Frodsham:

I found a Mary Ellen Jackson, born 1858, and a Mary Jackson, born 1859, in the GRO indexes. Both births were registered in Rucorn. I’m not sure which would be for the daughter of William and Mary Jackson:

I next looked for the GRO marriage index for William Jackson and Mary. I found an index which includes a William Jackson and two Marys. One of these is Mary Davies and one is Mary Newell. If you go back to the 1871 census for the family of William and Mary Jackson, you’ll notice that 22 year old Joseph Davies is in the household. He is listed as a cousin, but this may have been Mary’s cousin, rather than William’s. GRO marriage indexes don’t list people in order by marriage partner, but alphabetically by surname. I figured however, at this point in the research, that William Jackson had married Mary Davies, based on Joseph Davies in the 1871 census with the family. The index below shows the marriage recorded in the Runcorn district in the September quarter of 1854. The marriage can be found in Volume 8a, Page 283 of the GRO registers:

I located a second marriage index which confirms that William Jackson and Mary Davies were married. This was found at the Cheshire BMD website search engine at: http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

The index follows:

I next wanted to see if I could locate William Jackson and Mary Davies individually in the 1851 census. I found one possibility for William. The 1851 census shows an 18 year old William Jackson working as a farm labourer for the family of Thomas and Ellen Wild, in an address listed as, “Weaversham Wood (a detatched portion of the Parish of White Gate),” Cheshire. William is 18 years old and born in Frodsham. Also working as a farm labourer in the Wild household is 21 year old Thomas Wild, also born Frodsham. Thomas may have been William’s older brother:

I then found 19 year old Mary Davies living in the household of her parents, 48 year old mariner, John Davies, and John’s 46 year old wife Hannah. John and Hannah, as well as other members of the household, including Mary, were born in Frodsham. Aside from Mary, John and Hannah’s other children include 9 year old Roger and a daughter whose first name appears to be “Sheareth,” though the census page is faded in some spots and this daughter’s name is difficult to make out:

In the 1841 census I found the Davies family as well as William Jackson enumerated on the same page, though in different households located in Ship Street, Frodsham. The Davies household is listed first on the page. John Davies is shown to be a 30 year old mariner born in Cheshire. His wife Hannah is 30 years old and also born in Cheshire. The children in the household, also born in Cheshire are 13 year old Thomas, 8 year old Mary, and 5 month old Rodger:

There will not be GRO birth indexes for Thomas or Mary Davies, as they was born before the British government commenced with civil registration in 1837.

Two households away from the Davies family in Ship Street is the residence of John and Hannah Lowe and their children. In the household with them are 8 year old William Jackson and 15 year old Joseph Jackson. William and Joseph may have been brothers. Unlike future census enumerations, the 1841 census does not give the relationships of people to the head of the household, and so I can’t be sure if Joseph and William Jackson may have been related to John or Hannah Lowe:

All of the information I found concerning the Jackson and related surnames should be looked at as finding aids at this time, and not proof of ancestry. You will need to further research the Jackson and related surnames to confirm if they are your ancestors.
