I am trying to find more information on the family of John Briant c1802 Steeple Claydon. John was a blacksmith and married Jane Sanders. They had two sons, Thomas c 1826 born in Padbury and William Charles b 1838 in Simpson. Both these sons were blacksmiths as well. These are the following dtrs: ELiza c 1835 Steeple Claydon, Emma c 1840, Kate 1844 and Selena b 1851 in Simpson.
William and his mother Jane, along with the sisters emmigrated to the US and ended up in Madison Illinois. William Charles left there and came to Vancouver Island, BC Canada in 1862. Selena died in 1870 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Any information on this family would be most helpful.
I can only find them in the 1851 census. No other census records show them, nor any birth or marriage records.

I have a lot of Duncombes that are in Australia, but without any of your ancestors, back as far as you can go, I can't help as I don't have the latest generation. If you can get back to the later 1800s or earlier, I may be able to link your branch with my Australian lineages, all of which go back to England, some by way of Jamaica, Bahamas, etc. Very interesting family. None of of the Duncombes were transported, but married some that were and married descendants of some that were.
cheers
Dave

Hi My line is the PEDDLE one and as I live in Bucks, in the time BC (Before Computers (made everything easier)), I extracted all the Peddles from the Lt Missenden parish registers. Therefore if another John EAST married a different Sarah I would not have a record of this. As I pointed out before there were 2 Sarah PEDDLE's marrying within 2 months of one another, but only 1 Sarah PEDDLE's baptism in that parish. Also there may have been a corruption of Acton, as the common name in the parish was AXTEN/AXTON

Jenny

Hi Karen,

I found Edward through a few documents by searching by his different surnames. On his birth certificate he is Edward Thornton Stannard born 24th September 1856 at 16 Paddington Street, Marylebone. His parents are Eleanor Grace Brickwell and William Thomas Stannard a Printer. I searched the address on the 1851 and 1861 census but they were not living there. I have had a hard time finding either of them on other documents as well.
By the 1861 census he is living with the Ayers (although it has been transcribed incorrectly as Agers. He is down as Edward Thornton only. On the 1871 census he is still with the Ayers but his name is down as Edward T Brickwell.

I'm wondering if there is any way we can find out more about his birth parents and adoption?

Re: West Family Of Long Crendon

1. THOMAS4 WEST (WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1)1,1 was born 1642 in Long Crandon, Buckinghamshire, England1, and died 11 Jan 1696 in Long, Crendon, Buckinghamshire, England1. He married RACHEL ANN GILPIN1,1 1682 in Haddeham, Bucks, Pennsylvania, USA1. She was born 14 Feb 1660 in Dorchester, Oxfordshire, England1,1, and died 06 Oct 1694 in Birmingham, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA1,1.

Children of THOMAS WEST and RACHEL GILPIN are:
i. RACHEL5 WEST1, b. 1683, Wapping, Stepney, Middlesex, England1; d. 1764, Great Britain, England1.

ii. WILLIAM WEST1, b. 19 May 1686, Haddenham, Buckinghamshire, England1; d. 1720, Springfield, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA1.

iii. THOMAS WEST1, b. 1689, Wapping Stepney, Middlesex, England1; d. 1743, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, USA1.

2.
iv. JOHN WEST, b. 28 Oct 1690, Long Crendon, Bucks, England; d. 05 Oct 1776, Marlborough, Oxfordshire, England.
v. JOSEPH WEST, b. 07 Mar 1687, Long Crendon, Bucks, England.

On Genealogy.com there is a conversation as below:

Your line also follows from Richard West, so the line intersects the de la Warr line from this Richard born circa 1465. He was the son of Richard West (7th Baron de la Warr) and Catherine Hungerford, daughter of the 2nd Baron Hungerford of Farleigh. He was the younger brother of Thomas West, 8th Baron de la Warr.

Your descent from James Buckle and Mary West can be clarified a little more, though.

Mary West was born 15 November 1761 in Long Crendon. She was the daughter of Thomas West and Elizabeth Saw, and married James Buckle on 22 October 1778 in St. Mary's Church, Long Crendon. She died in 1802, apparently in Long Crendon.

James Buckle was born circa 1752 in Long Crendon, and died 25 October 1801 in the same place.

This couple had 6 children that I know of, and they were: James Buckle (7 Nov 1782), John Robert West Buckle (18 Apr 1784), Penelope Buckle (1 Oct 1786), Emanuel David Buckle (23 Sep 1787), Cornelius Buckle (29 Nov 1788) and Sarah Buckle (9 Sep 1792).

Of these children, James Buckle married Esther Johnson on 23 Apr 1804; John Robert West Buckle married Sophia Fryer; Penelope Buckle married John Radford on 8 Jun 1812; and Cornelius Buckle married Kitty (Katherine?) Clayton on 23 Aug 1813. These marriages are recorded in St. Mary's Church in Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire.

Thomas West (Mary West's father), was born 25 Sep 1720 in Long Crendon and died circa May 1778 in the same place. He married Elizabeth Saw on 22 Oct 1754 in Long Crendon. She was born circa 1730, and died circa Apr 1804. Their other known children were Elizabeth, Henry, Thomas, John and Martha West.

Thomas West was the son of Joseph West and Margaret Smith, who were married 1 Oct 1713 in Haxey, Lincolnshire, England. Their other children were John, Joseph, Anne and Charles West.

Joseph West was also born in Long Crendon. He was the son of Thomas West and Rachel Anne Gilpin, whose line is pretty well established in America.

Joseph's younger brother, John West, immigrated to America and had a large family. His youngest son was Benjamin West, the artist.

You are correct in stating that Benjamin West's line diverged from the Barons de la Warr quite a few generations before Thomas West, 3rd Baron (1577-1618), who was Baron de la Warr of the 2nd creation. This Thomas was the son of Thomas West, 2nd Baron de la Warr (2nd creation) and Anne Knollys.

Thomas, 2nd Baron de la Warr, was the son of William West and Elizabeth Strange. William was the 1st Baron de la Warr of the 2nd creation, and the same that tried to poison his predecessor. Elizabeth Strange was his 1st wife, and was the daughter of Sir Thomas Strange of Chesterton.

William West, 1st Baron, was the son of George West and Elizabeth Moreton. Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Robert Moreton of Lechlade.

George West was the son of Thomas West, 8th Baron de la Warr (1st creation) and Eleanor Copley. Eleanor was the baron's third wife. His first wife was Eleanor Percy, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Northumberland, but they had no children. His 2nd wife was Elizabeth Mortimer, and this union produced 6 children, including Thomas West, the 9th Baron (1st creation), who was the uncle William tried to poison.

Thomas West, the 8th Baron was the son of Richard West, 7th Baron de la Warr and Catherine Hungerford. Catherine was the daughter of Robert Hungerford, 2nd Baron Hungerford of Farleigh, and Margaret Botreaux, 4th Baroness Botreaux (suo jure). It is HERE that the Artist's line diverges with that of the de la Warr line.

Richard West and Catherine Hungerford were the parents of 9 children (with 6 sons). The eldest, Thomas, inherited the title and estates of his father. One of the younger sons, Richard West, was apparently the ancestor of Benjamin the artist.

Richard West's wife is unknown, but the line follows through his son, also named Richard West (wife unknown), to Nicholas West and his wife Isabel.

From Nicholas and Isabel's son William West (wife unknown), to his son William West, who was the first to be recorded in Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire. His wife was Joan, and their son was also named William West, who married Rachel.

William and Rachel were the parents of yet another William West, who with his wife Elizabeth, were the parents of Thomas West and Elizabeth West.

Thomas West married Rachel Gilpin, and his sister Elizabeth married Rachel's brother, Colonel Thomas Gilpin.

Thomas and Rachel were the parents of at least 5 children. Their son Thomas West, married Mary Dean. He appears to be the eldest. Their son John West, married Sarah Pearson, and were the parents of Benjamin West (the Artist), as well as Samuel West (my ancestor).

The children I have listed for John West and Sarah Pearson are: Joseph West (6 Jul 1719); Sarah West (1720); Mary West (1721); William West (1724); Rachel West (1726); Hannah West (1728); Elizabeth West (1729); Samuel West (1732); Hugh West (1733); John West (1736); and Benjamin West (10 Oct 1738).

Joseph West married Jane Owen. Sarah West married a Howell. Mary West married Jonathan Morris. William West married Hannah Shaw. Rachel West married John Clarkson. Elizabeth West married John Morris. Samuel West married ? Clarkson. John West married Margaret Pearson. And Benjamin West married Elizabeth Shewell.

Hello Bob
It seems that the Buggey line living in Wendover split after 1800. My line - Francis (1790 son of William and Sarah) moved to Acton Middlesex after his marriage in Wendover in 1809 to Ann Harvey. However, it seems that the other Buggey's from the same parents stayed in Wendover and carried on the Wendover line.

Hi Henry,
I dont need to persue Annie Head(s) any further. I have quite a file on Henry. I was initialy fascinated by the fact he dissaperared off the censuses here in England and I needed to find out where he went.

He was born in a tiny village in Lincolnshire , called Dowsby. His parents were Michael Heads and Mary (Tazzyman).
Michael was one of 9 children, many whom died in infancy. Michael was the younger brother of John Heads born 1806 who was my husband's great great grandfathers direct ancestor.
They were a very poor family, often in and out of the Workhouse in the town of Bourne.
Mary Heads , Henrys mother, died in 1827, and although his father remarried he too died in 1829 leaving henry an orphan and he was brought up in the Workhouse.

I have traced the Head(s) family back to 1769 for certain and at that date I have a birth I can't prove, but the family then goes back to the 1500s. All in Lincolnshire and around the town of Bourne, They never strayed far, Henry was the first I have found to go overseas. One of the family later went to Canada. There are more Head family over there than are now in Lincolnshire.

I have not found any direct male descendents of Henry Heads in Australia. You may know different.

Cheers
Marianne

Hi,
Thanks for your reply to my Watts family enquiry.
I have been in touch before with someone who was going to look at a family history I sent to the library at Eltham near Melbourne. Was this you?
I did not know that Annie married a man called James Ellis.
Nor did I know that John Watts was murdered.
Have you researched the Watt family in England? John and Sarah came from Adstock in Buckinghamshire.
If you need any help in this , please ask.
Cheers
Marianne

I believe I am a descendant. My mother is Lily Goss and was born in the Falkland Islands. Her father was Jacob Goss and mother was Rebecca McCullum.

My mother left the Falklands with one child. She met and married Samuel Joseph Wilson (in England) this union created seven more children. All descendants of Henry & Sophia.

If you want more information I can provide some more, but as mentioned in a previous response can be found in the book William Henry Goss. There are living descendants in The Falkland Islands, New Zealand, England and Australia.

Do you think it will ever be included in our Ancestry subscription?

All the best.

Steve

Dear Marianne, just a quick message re the Watts family. My gg grandparents John and Sarah Watts as you say arrived 1848 on the 'Adelaide', they resided at Eltham Vic with their family, and John was murdered at the Fountain Inn, Eltham c24th January 1860 by a John Castle the court case is reported in (The Argus Melb Vic Wednesday 18th April 1860 page 1.) He was buried at Eltham cemetery but there are no records to show where the grave is. Sarah then married to Robert Meadows of Eltham. This is a very large family and I was interested in your husbands connection. I do have the wedding cert. for Ann (Annie) to Matthew Henry Head 28-1-1852, birth cert for Harriet Head 1861, and after Henry Head's death a cert when Ann married a James Ellis 3rd March 1875, and a cert. for Ann to Samuel Southby in 1884 where she still used the surname of Head. And as you could imagine a lot of the Watts cert. Our particular side of the family moved to Qld in 1962 leaving everyone back in Vic. I am the fourth Henry Arthur in the family. I'am sure I have contacted you at some time but it escapes me if I have. 07 4697 5369 I barely keep my nose above the family tree there is that much.

I can't speak specifically on the Gawcott strike but in 1873 there was a small strike affecting about 80 workers in the parish of Sandridge, Hertfordshire. The Union made arrangements for some of them to take jobs in the midlands, and I have been able to identify some probably strikers because they were in Sandridge in the 1871 census and in Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire in the 1881 census. You may be able to identify some possible strikers by tracing down any agricultural labourers who made a "major" move between the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

See www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/links/strike.1973.htm
