Classification: Query
Surnames: SMITH, LAND
1. I cannot seem to find when my great grandfather John Smith came out to Australia...could be around 1882. He was born at Berkshire London 1858.
He was on the census 1871 a household member aged 13yrs.

His father John (on 1871 census) was described as a 2nd master, his wife 2nd master's wife and Isabella as 2nd master's daughter. John Snr was 48yrs & at Chelsea barracks for the 2nd battalion Scots Guards. Parish: St Jude. Civil Parish Chelsea, Reg. District:Chelsea south.

On the 1861 census John Senior aged 37yrs was a Serj Major, Middlesex, England. St Martins In the Fields. Sub District: Charing cross. St Georges Barracks, Charing Cross.
I found him on the 1841 aged 17yrs and the 1851 census aged 27yrs both listed him to be residing in Kircudbrightshire, Scotland so he must have gone to Engand sometime between 1851 & 1861.

John Smith snr. B:1823 & Hannah Smith ( nee Land) B:1826 married 1852 Whitechapel, England
Children:
* Isabella B: 1853 Middlesex, London
* Alexander B: 1855 Middlesex, London
* Hannah Aldershot B: 1857 Hampshire, Aldershot ( yes Aldershot IS her 2nd name!)
* John(G,G G'father) B: 1858 Birkshire, London
* Agnes B: 1861 Birkshire, London
* Sarah B: 1864 Montreal, Canada, Nth America

John I have been told was a Grenadier....or Queens Husser in the Dragoons. I know his older brother was in the 2nd regiment of the Queens Dragoons in 1877 aged 18yr & 1month according to his pay book.

I don't know if any of John's siblings came to Austalia.

Also I can't work out the exact time of John 's father's death...as above John Smith. He was born 1823 in Campbeltown, Kircudbrightshire, Scotland
He was on the 1871 census but Hannah was on the 1881 census as the head of the family. So he must have died in the gap of 10 yrs I have seen a record for 1871-1872 but not sure. Hannah was living in Ridgeway street, Derbyshire, England. the parish: Heage. on the 1881 census.
