I have been working on my computer with this until my brain has fried! Would you please help me a moment. You wrote that on the registers, James Layley's dad was John Layley. I think you saw that on the marriage registers. Do you know his mom's name? I think you had mentioned that it was Elizabeth, but they (John and Elizabeth) were married in 1829. That date wouldn't make it possible for him to be James' dad. Was it a different John? I apologize. I have so many names and dates floating around in my brain. At some point, Emma Layley Bronislawski became a Thompson.

Kristi

Trying to trace Elizabeth (Lizzie) Kislingbury who is my Great Grandmother. I have birth certificates for Hilda Davis (Grandmothers sister) born 1901 in Stillingfleet, Yorks' and Elsie (my grandmother) born 1903 Naburn, Yorks' both certificates show the father as George Davis, but any marriage search draws a blank. I do know that Elizabeth latterly married a Goodship and eventually lived in Reading,Berks, Field Road and Connaught Rd, but both addresses were after 1911.I have found a Kislingbury who married Henry Hoare and then a Elizabeth Hoare who married a George Goodship, but no sign of Hilda or Elsie!!

Hi Kristi
Just thanking you for your very kind reply. Glad the information was useful, it was no trouble to look up.
On reflection have wondered if I presumed too much on the 1841 Census entry, Jane for James, since I don't think there was a sign of the known sister Ann, its something you might have to investigate further. And I don’t know for sure that Thomas Sparks first marriage was in 1812, it does seem a long way back, again you'll know better whether its possible.
Apologies also for misspelling Layley as Laley when typing up some of the entries in Shinfield. Layley was the way it was spelt in the registers.
Again, glad to have been able to help.
Kind regards
John
I am looking for the parents of Isaac Edward Hamblin b. Abt. 1838 Speenhamland, Berkshire, England and d. Jun 1892 Newbury, Berkshire, England. He married Martha Ann (MNU) b. c. 1841 Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, England. Thier son Henry Lionel Hamblin b. 16 Mar 1874 came to Nova Scotia abt. 1895 and married Willinea Leona "Lena" Shelbourn b. 17 Jul 1880 Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am trying to connect these Hamblins to James Hamblin b. 1608 Devon, Kent Co., England who immigrated to Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. Hope someone out there might have some info on the above and be willing to help me out.

Terri Hamblin

Hi Kristi,

From the information given by John, you did have the correct parents for Emma. I see that at the time she entered the US in 1872, the name on the ships manifest is shown as Brownlouski, and all of the children have this name attributed to them. Perhaps they changed this to Thompson later. Emma's husband was a jeweler

Hi
To add to the earlier replies, if you are still searching for information on James Layley I have some that may be of help as I have been able to look at the microfilm of the St Martin in the Fields marriage registers here in London.

So the first one, on Page 209 of the Register in question, entry no. 418
11th January 1857
James Layley, full age, Bachelor, Profession: Gas Fitter, Residence: St Martins Lane, Father: John Layley, Father's Profession: Postman
Emma Mary Sparks, minor, Spinster, Residence Do. (St Martins Lane), Father: Thomas Sparks, Fathers Profession: Bootmaker
Married after Banns by F. P. Koe Curate
Signed by James Layley, E. M. Sparks
Witnessed by Thos Sparks, Chtte? Sparks

And then her remarriage in 1866, on Page 226 of this later register, entry no. 451
16th December 1866
Sigismund Bronislawski, full age, Bachelor, Watch Maker, Residence: Francis St, Father: Thomas Bronislawski, Watch Maker
Emma Layley, full age, Widow, Residence: Do. (Francis St), Father: Thomas Sparks, Boot maker
Married after Banns by A E Northy??? Curate
Signed by Sigismund Bronislawski, Emma Layley
Witnessed by Robert Harris, Sib? Sparks

Thomas Sparks was in business as a bootmaker, there is a second marriage for him at Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate in 1848 to Mary Grimwood, a widow. She may be an in-law because his first marriage is likely to have been to a Charlotte Grimwood at St Mary Newington 13 July 1812. Both these marriages are available on Ancestry databases, I don't know whether you have access to them. The baptisms of James and Emma Layley's children which are also available online confirm James' occupation.

If you have found Emma's emigration to the US, you will know it was on the Constantine in 1872, arriving New York 15th April. Her husband was Polish.

James Layley is in the 1841 Census in Shinfield, Berkshire (Piece 13 Book 6 Folio 9 Page 12) but I think as "Jane Laley" aged 8, a female, which might be why you cant find him! With "his" step-father Philip Bint, 29, Postman (I think), and mother Elizabeth Bint, 30. Plus two more Layleys unknown to me.

1851 in Wokingham Berkshire
Piece 1693/Folio 153/Page 8 schedule 31
Philip Bint Head 37 born Shinfield Berks Ag Lab
Elizabeth Bint Wife 38 born Sherbourne Park??
James Lalie Son in law 19 born Shinfield Ag Lab
Ann Lalie Dau in law 15 born Shinfield
Plus Sarah Bint 11, Maria Bint 4 and Philip Bint 8 mo.

It gets a little complicated here, looking at Shinfield baptisms for 1833. The parish register does not give birthdates, but there are two dates and two names on one entry on Page 113.
April 8 1832/Oct 20 1833
James
Andrew
Parents: John + Elizabeth
Laley
Abode: Shinfield
Fathers Profession: Postman
An anotation in the margin, possibly M T or M F.

It doesn't seem they were twins as an Andrew Laley was buried in Shinfield 16 February 1834 aged 5 months. Abode was Whitley Wood.
A John Layley of Whitley Wood was buried 4 November 1832, aged 2yrs 4mo, but I didn't see a burial in Shinfield of the father, John the postman.
There is a later baptism (9 October 1836) of Ann Elizh to John + Elizh Laley of Whitley Wood (father a postman) in Shinfield.
There are also baptisms in Shinfield to William and Sarah Layley of Arborfield at this time.

The remarriage of Elizabeth Laley to Philip Bint in Shinfield in 1839 has been submitted to the IGI on familysearch.
Additionally, Philip Bint was given as a Bachelor, Labr, of Arborfield, son of Thomas Bint, Labr.
Elizh Laley was given as a Widow, a Letter Carr. of Shinfield and her father was given as Joseph Butler, a Foreman?
From this you should be able to find the marriage of John Laley to Elizabeth on the IGI, in 1829.

Hope this is useful
Kind regards
John

What year did your family come to the States? I cannot find them on the census returns, but that may be because they changed their name. Did you ever find out if she maried for a third time, or did the Russian gentleman want to appear more English? I am also trying to find a link so that we can establish which Emma Sparks is the right one. What christian names have been passed through the family, as this may give some clues.

Nancy

Yes, there is a family with a Thomas and Charlotte on the 1941 census, but not on the 1851, will try to find which family is the correct one, but you may be right, this is the 1841 with Charlotte.
Hello, yes, I am in England.

Do you know when your family arrived in the US. I could not find them on any more census returns. Do you know if they changed the surname from the Russian, or did she marry again.

I am happy I could help you. Let me know if you are looking for any more information.

Nancy

I don't know who you are, but one thing I do know is that you are my new hero! The information you found for me is priceless. I did not know that Emma had remarried a Russian man. You definitely have the right family. Those are the names in my Layley line. When I called my Auntie up and told her, she all of a sudden remembered the name of the Russian man. She's very old and it takes awhile to jog her memory. I just cannot thank you enough. Are you in England yourself? I'm in Arizona. THANK YOU THANK YOU!

My great great grandfather was James Layley. I don't have a birth or death date. He married Emma Mary Sparks on 11 January 1857. She was born in 1836, so he is probably around that same time (birth). They are both from England. London, I believe. I am trying to find James' family - parents, siblings, etc. Can anyone help me? I understand that many of the Layley's are from Berkshire and Sulhampton. I know that James died in England and Emma headed to the states at some point and became a Thompson. However, I don't know if she became a Thompson before or after she came to the states. Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks! Kristi

Hi,

I've reached a bit of a dead end with my research and I'm wondering if anyone can help.

I've traced my father's family back to a Thomas Lloyd, who was born in 1781 in Bucklebury, and was still there at the time of the 1841 census. He shows up as living with his wife Mary (maiden surname not known) and several children including my ancestor, William.

I'd really like to go back a bit further, but I'm not sure how. Any help or advice gratefully received!

thanks

Victoria
hi michelle

interesting stuff yes. but you can only see registers on this site not originals. this is the official site

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates they are 7 english pounds a go. you will not them cheaper. births state, full name of child, mother, and fathers, (if there was one) name, occupation of father. (i think)

marriage, names, status at marriage, age, names of fathers, occupations of both the couple and their fathers.

deaths, show name, age, address, reason of death.

findmypast is also a goverment site. www.freebmd.org is a free site that would prob be of more use to you because you can search on full names, just surnames or christian names, counties, or districts. your seemed to do a lot in docking. this is where i got the information i gave you. the findmypast site gives you whole pages to look at and they can not tell you if your person is on there or not you have to trawl through everything to see for yourself.

to order certificates you need the name of the person, the district ie docking, the two numbers one is the volume number the other the page number. try to make sure the information you give is correct as they will charge you 3 pounds and refund you 4 and you will have to try again.

hope this helps

kind regards

carole

I am now looking for the actual birth/death certificates for William Miller and birth certificates for Robert, Ernest, William, Mary Ann and Anna. I see that Anna is not in the household by 1911. I can only assume she married. I have no clue how to continue on this line but would be interesting since she is the only relative in that family that didn't come to the US.

This is him and I have seen that document that lists the births in the second quarter of 1895. I see the 4b 315 means the actual book the record is in. Is there somewhere i can see the actual birth record or borth certificate? I did purchase the findmypast subscription and have found some interesting stuff today. I still can't seem to find the actual documents for births/deaths. I also need to do some research on Norfolk since I was trying to find the parish records for the family but have no clue where it might be. Thanks again for all of your help, all of you. I really appreciate it.

I was looking yesterday for the actual record to link to my tree. All I can find for the 1911 census are paid records. Do you know if this is this the case? Is it because it is a fairly new listing? Do you have any ideas where i could look for actual birth certificates or baptisms, weddings, deaths in that Norfolk area? Thanks again for your help. My grandmother will love this.

I'd love it. I am stuck on my great grandfather, Robert Thomas Miller, who was born May 26, 1895 in Norfolk (according to his death certificate). I know he came to NY or Canada around 1912 so he should be on the 1911 census. There is also his mother, Mary Ann Williams or Williamson, his younger brothers William and Ernest, and an older sister, Anna. His father, William,a Presbyterian Minister, died before Robert came to America so I'm not sure if he was alive in 1911 or not. My grandmother is turning 90 in January and I'm trying to get this done as a gift. Thank you for offering to look this up, I appreciate it. Michelle Vance

Thanks for your reply

I am descendesd from William Bull and Emma Hibbert)Great Grandparents), through James Arthur Bull and Annie Collins Grand Parents) James Arthur Bull Beatrice Bull nee Kirton ( Parents)

I have been able to trace William from Birth in 1826 to Death in 1903.The marrige certifcate show a Johmn Bull as father( and John Hibbert)

I had found that he and one (now two William born 1853) sons
had worked in the Brewery I can not remeber the owners name at this moment, the Brewrey was in St Johns Road Islewoth and was still ther till llate 1980's or early 1990's. The owners did provide monies for the building of the St Johns church and also the Alms Houses that are still standing today. There is aplaque outside the church that outlines this ansd a few more facts

Another of his sons John worked in Soap Factory this was on teh London Road Isleworth it was PEARS SOAP and was there till the 1960. This became offices and had a big Sports Field I think for Beecchams and just recently this became Flats

James Arthur , I had found that he had serveresd in the Army. His Service Record had caused me some concern where it showed he served till October 1902. He was shown as living in The Lodge Gunnersbury House ( Chiswick) in June of 1897 when he married Annie Collins, this was because he was first released form the Army in to Special Reserve early 1897 and was recalled October 1899 and was in South Africa which was the Boar War.

I am working on a number of sides to both the Bull and Kirton family

What would be useful is any help relating to Bull's Whiitton
(Seaton Rd Hounslow Rd or Saxon Ave Hanworth)these os=are address's of James Arthur Annine Collins descendants.

I still llve in the area and have a son and daughter-in-law who livwe about 1/2 a mile from Seaton Rd

I know that there are otrher looking so who knows what may happen.

If you wish I could foward my Email Adress

Thanks Alan

Yes, been a while since I did much research, but I am descended from George Bull, brother of James, and son of William Bull and Emma Hibbert. I will look up your tree shortly. From my searches, James was in the Royal Artillery?? The only children I had on my notes to date was Ellen & Beatrice.

George Bull was actually my great grandfather, he was 53 when my grandmother was born in 1913 and I do have a photo of him in 1940 aged 80. I am also in touch with descendants of Frederick, another brother to James and George. Fred had a son Sydney and then a son Reg, who it turns out lives only 5 miles away from me so we met up a year or so ago. The family resemblance was amazing!

I am aware that William Bull (1826) parents were John Bull and Maria Fritter (Flitter). After John died in 1835 Maria married again to a gentleman with surname Dicker. They had more children and at one stage in late census records one of the Bull's lives next door but 3 to his half "Dicker" brother.

Not sure what you are know about the eldest brother, William born 1853? He committed suicide in the Brewery where he worked - possibly depression or something to do with his wife having an affair but not sure what to make of the newspaper report of the inquest.

Happy to share any info I have on the Bulls.
