David: I'm looking for family of Herbert Lowings, Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire. I have very little info, but my mother told me that she thought her grandmother's name was Mary Dasely or Daisley. Is it possible that they are one & the same? I have been looking for a long time for their family. Herbert Lowings was born in Gamlingay in 1887. He had brothers Joseph & Albert. Herbert & Albert married 2 sisters, Polly & Etty Hutchinson. They came to Canada in the early 1900's because my mother was born here in 1910. Hopefully I can find out more about my roots before it's too late. Thanks, Marilyn

1871 RG10/1576 folio 74B
Gamlingay Sinks
Thomas Lowings head marr 30 Lab
Mary Lowings wife 28 (I think this age must be wrong)
Both born Gamlingay

If you check http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
there's a marriage in the September quarter 1870 in Caxton registration district (which includes Gamlingay) of Thomas Lowings where one of the other parties is Mary Ibbott. You need the marriage cert to find out who the fathers were and also to confirm that Ibbott was Mary's maiden name (if she was a widow that fact should be stated and her maiden name given). You could also buy Herbert's birth cert which will also give his mother's maiden name - it would be safer to get this first just in case Mary Ibbott died and Thomas remarried another Mary, although I can't see a second marriage for Thomas. On the face of it though, your mother's grandmother wasn't Mary Daisley.

In 1861 there's a Thomas Lowings 21 ag lab b Gamlingay son of Gabriel Lowings 49 and Elizabeth Lowings 48 both born Gamlingay, living in Gamlingay. There's also a Mary Hibbett 10 daughter of John 60 and Eliza 37 all born Gamlingay living at Gamlingay Sinks.

David

Good morning David: Just a brief question. After receiving your info, in my excitement forgot to ask you what is your connection to the Lowings family? I also have the attestation or enlistment papers in the Canadian Army for Herbert, Joseph & Horace Lowings if you're interested. Please let me know, thanks, Marilyn

Good morning David: Thanks again for your help. Sorry we're not related. Am still searching for more info on the Lowings, but also on my grandmother Polly Lowings. I have found nothing so far. She married Herbert Lowings I assume in England before coming to Canada. Her sister Elizbeth Esther (Ettie) married Albert Lowings & they came to Canada together. My mother was born here in Canada 1n 1910 so assume it was pre 1910. The sister's surname was Hutchison. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks again, Marilyn

Good afternoon David: I can't tell you how grateful I am for all the info you have given me. I have been searching for some info on my grandmother's family & got absolutely nowhere. Thank you so much for taking the time to help.It is very important that I know my mother's family history. Have most of my father's, but nothing for my mother's parents. I now have so much more. Thanks again, Marilyn

You're welcome Marilyn. And I've just realised that in the middle of my last message is probably the Daisley name that your grandmother didn't imagine after all!
