Well it has been a long time since I have done any work on my Wiles family, perhaps this is the jump start I needed to carry on with my wiles tree, unfortunately, there are not many paper records that I don't already have. If you like we could compare notes again..........Lynda

It's just struck me that the Gt Shelford baptisms on the IGI are female only. Goodness knows what possessed the LDS to do that. However the males are on the BVRI but there's still no Ansell immediately earlier than the 1761 baptism. The only John was 10 Sept 1780 son of Joseph and Mary Ansell.

No John Manfield either I'm afraid.

David

As 1761 was the first child of William to Ann to be baptised in Gt Shelford, and as they weren't married in the parish, there must be a chance that John was baptised elsewhere, perhaps where they married.

David

Great Shelford baptisms and marriages up to 1876 have been extracted onto the IGI. There were two Ansells baptised at about that time who may be connected, children of William and Ann.

David

I have a Stephen Deller, christened 9 Mar 1817 Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, England. His parents were John Wakeling Dellow and Mary Rowland. Stephen is my 2nd cousin 10 times removed..... He married Ann Gray abt 1838 in Royston, Hertfordshire, Eng and they had 3 children. I also have Mary Ann Deller in my tree and she is my 3rd cousin, 3 times removed. Somehow (according to my Austrailian connection) the name began as Dellow and when part of the family moved to Cambridgeshire, it became Deller and/or Dellar and more. My family goes back to Thomas Dellow who married Margaret Unknown and had 3 children born between 1541 and 1552. Most of this information comes from David Blackman of Australia whose wife's maiden name is Deller. My Dellow/Dello/Deller/Dellar went from England to Canada and then to Michigan, USA. According to my info - part from David Blackman and part proven by me, Mary Ann Deller's background is:
Parents: John Dellar, Sarah Barley
g-parents: George Deller, Ann Stacy
2g-grandparents: John Deller and Hannah Maria Blows
3g-grandparents: John Deller and Eleanor Pink
John Deller and Eleanor Pink had 2 sons, John b abt 1740 and James bn abt 1744. My line descends from John and Mary Ann's decends from James. Mary Ann's father, John and my 2nd g-grandfather are 2nd cousins. Pauli

This is information from passenger arrival list bound for Australia by Di Cummins. Duchess of Northumberland 1839.
GILES Edward and wife Elizabeth Anna nee HOLE and 3 children
GILES Walter 3 (died Sept 27th of desease of heart, on voyage) son of Edward. Edward was a surveyor.(of note in early Australian history) Elizabeth Anna or sometimes recorded Ann's father was Joseph Nelson Hole which makes the names Edward Joseph Giles fit. It is the 3rd child which puzzles me. I do have it recorded by another family member Robert Giles birth year 1838 but I have no soucre. Another tree member had Victor and Frank but I believe they are incomplete names from the other generation, or Frank short for James Frances Giles born in Australia 1841. Elizabeth Anna's (Hole)family came from Bermondsey area which explains south of river. Edward and Elizabeth were married in Fleet Street, London which explains maybe they lived north of River. My next step here is to research all information and sources on Robert Giles in Australia to ensure he belongs to our tree and if so he has to be the third child. If he isn't ours it has to be another name altogether. They seemed to name all of their children family names (7 born in Australia) She had a brother George and Charles. Her only dgt was named Priscilla after her sister. Edward also had a brother George. Are there any possible links to a George Giles. I appreciate all of your time and help. In future I shall take your advice and wait

This is what we have establised the 1st two children of Elizabeth and Edward Giles Walter Sedgwick Giles adn Edward Joseph Giles so I am looking for the documentation of the third child Possible names submitted by family members Percy Ludlow Giles?? died SA
Victor.. Giles Frank Giles or Robert Giles They would have to have been born 1836-1839 when ship sailed.
I just dn't know how to research this. Christina Australia

Hi Christina

I'm stuck too!

Baptisms are shown on the IGI, which isn't complete, but I can't see your names other than Walter Sedgwick Giles.

Births post July 1837, IF the birth was registered, should be on www.freebmd.org.uk, but I can't see your names.

I'd already checked the LMA records that appear on Ancestry, but the only result was Edward Joseph Giles in Camberwell. Whilst the timing is right I'm not totally convinced - married in Fleet St (north of the river) in 1834, Edward 1835 at Camberwell (south of the river) then Walter in Spitalfield in 1836 (north of the river again)

What was Edward's occupation in Australia? A lot of possible childrens' names have been mentioned. Which names appear on the passenger list?

David

Hi Christina

Apology accepted. Cross posting the same request across a number of boards roughly simultaneously often results in a duplication of effort, as has happened here. If you post a request on one board, and don't get a reply within a couple of days, then by all means post on another board.

David

If this is the same William & Mary you requested last month on the Essex board, then I gave you the full 1851 census in my reply of 28th Sep. I spelt Mary's place of birth exactly as it was spelt on the census sheet 'WRATING SUFFOLK'. I made no comment even though I realised that this was not the correct name. I expect that it was meant to be WRATTING however there are two villages in Suffolk, Great & Little Wratting but also closer to William & Mary is the village of West Wratting although this is in Cambridgeshire.
I have now also looked at the 1861 census which is more helpful,on that Mary lists her P o B as Little Wratting, Suffolk, so hopefully that is correct.

A marriage entry will not tell you where a person was born, only where they were living in the weeks prior to the marriage. I think however that we have ascertained that Mary was probably born in Little Wratting, Suffolk.
As far as I can see Little Wratting births have not been extracted onto the IGI and no transcription appears available on line. You will therefore need to look at a copy of the Parish Records or find someone that has access to look it up for you.
If you go to the Suffolk Surnames List at :- http://www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk/ there are two people who are willing to do look ups for Little Wratting.

Right I now have a copy of the birth certificate for Walter James Thomas Wilkin(s) born 24 July 1882 Pancras, London. This gives his father as Walter Sydney Wilkin(s) barman and Elizabeth Southin all living at the time of the birth at 105 Torriano Avenue, London. ( I have been able to look up on google maps and the address still exists and there is a street view.)

Elizabeth Southin was born ....... abt 1857 in Deptford, Kent

I have now found her together with husband Walter in the 1881 census living at 10 Long Court, St Martin in the Fields with a daughter, also Elizabeth, born abt 1876

I've found a Marriage Index for Walter and Elizabeth Southin in 1874 in West Ham vol 4a pg 20

I've found a Death Index for a Walter Sidney Wilkin in Chelmsford,Essex for 1888 which stacks up to her neing listed as a widow in 1891

I've found Walter on the 1871 census when he was working as a barman aged 21

The maiden name on the Birth certificate is definitely spelt Southin and this is the same spelling for the Marriage Index.

However I've think I've now probably found Elizabeth but with surname spelt at Sutton in the 1871 Wales census( living in Pembroke Dock )with her parents and siblings and 1861 England census living with them in Deptford Kent. Father Thomas Sutton a shipwright born Devenport and mother Rachel born in Hastings so understandable that he was working in shipping areas.

So can this possibly be the same Elizabeth born abt 1858 in Deptford Kent with a son Walter born abt 1882 in London but listed as the widowed sister of Abraham Hitch and with Walter listed as his nephew in the 1891 Census in Penketh Lancashire?

Ho Hum - I feel like I'm never going to get beyond Abraham Hitch starting with his marriage certificate in 1867 as I cannot resolve the issues re his birthplace/date and whereabouts before his 1867 marriage.

The only thing I know about Abraham's father is the fact that he was listed on Abraham's wedding certificate as William Hitch, bricklayer

Dear Whoever,

On 1st August, you asked about Elizabeth Parsons Baldrey; I have only just picked up this query. I have the name in my family tree, though I haven't yet proved the link with my line. Did you get any replies to your query?

Michael

Re: Pymonts

Most of the Pymonts in Australia are descendants of William Pymont - B 1815, Son of William "George" Pymont B 1795 , Royston Hertfordshire, (has also been Cambridgeshire as the county boundary has moved several times). convicted on 31/03/1848 at Hertford Court for theft he was placed on the ship "Adelaide" 18 Aug 1849 and transported to Australia - landing at Sydney Nov 1849

have a look here - Annette Wilkinson has done loads of research and William is listed on her site - http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~annettefamily...

It is believed that William descended from the Pyemont family originating in Lofthouse, Yorkshire with the earliest reference there being for Richard Pyemont a "merchaund of the city of London" - a cousin to Henry VIII via the woodville Family - who was bequeathed property in Lofthouse, wakefield, Yorkshire after the disolution of the monasteries
He died 36 June, 1546. and was buried In Wakefield old church. I am aware of 7 generations prior to this in wakefield but have no dates to coroborate - the earliest is Alexander Pyemont who married Elizabeth Flemming 1400?? ish

Variant spellings of Pymont are common including Pyemont, Pymond, Pimont Pymonte etc, however there is a "Pymont House" in Lofthouse which bears the "Pyemont" coat of arms.

The name Pymont aparently originates in Normandy, Northern France, earliest reference appears to be
Osbert PIMAN 1190 – 1195 (Mrs) Osbert PIMENT 1198 (1b)
Reference - The Norman People ( and their existing descendants in the British Dominions and the USA) Henry S King & Co 1874
-----------------------------------------

Noms et Prenoms de France By LAROUSSE
PIMONT n de hameau d’origine ( Seine – Inferieure : Manche )
.
------------------------------------------

Penguin Dictionary of Surnames by Basil COTTLE

PYMONT - Local name “Foot of the Hill” of places PIMONT on Manche and Seine - Inferieure

It appears likely that the Pymonts are related to the Pyemonts of Lofthouse in Yorkshire. This Family were said to have come over from Normandy with William the Conqueror.
The Pymonts appear in the Parish Registers of Royston Herts from 1608. These registers are complete from 1662 only.

It is most likely that PYRMONT is a mis-spelling of PYMONT rather than the other way around ! Hope that helps answer your query.

Hi there, thanks for mailing me, it's been a hectic year, and have really only just started looking at my tree again, I have recently had lot's of messages from different corners of the family, so I need to get my head round the Wiles side again, my head feels like a plate of spaghetti at the moment!!
I used to live next door to Peter and Jennifer Greenhow as my dad worked on Tophams farm (College farm), I love Eltisley and would love to get back there, I'm, in Biggleswade now after having lived in Sandy for 20 yrs or so. We left Eltisley in 1985 ish after my mum died,(Margaret Chambers) and dad remarried. My nan lived next door to Joan Wiles in the bungalows opposite the village school(she married a ? Wiles), there is a photo of Joan in the Eltisley milennium book, I don't know if you have seen the book at all.
Just help me get back on track, my nan was Catherine Muriel Ellen Wiles, (Married to William Chambers) of Gt.Gransden, her father was George Wiles and Emma Catherine Childerley.
who is our link, and are you local?
Your message of a year ago said Ivy was still there, is that still the case, I used to visit her I think sometimes, and with my friend Juile Hobson (her sisters were Braces), I don't remember if it was you or another member who said about a Brace relative, Did or does Ivy live in one of the bungalows that backs onto Greenfields??
I have just passed my driving test and about to get our first car,(20 years late!!) now I can start going back and visiting people, my aunt and a cousin are all I know I have there. Pam Sharpe, she owned the Mace shop, and I think I was also related to the other shop owner, we knew him a Gommy, think his name was malcolm Sewell. but I have to look at my paperwork to work that one out again!!
Look formward to hearing from you again. ah yes are you in contact with the other person on the thread, pollit, I haven't gotten round to replying to them either, will do v.soon though.
all the best, Angie
