No father named on the birth certificate means that the mother could not get the father to acknowlege his child. This was a legal requirement to prevent a child being registered to some well to do man - and later being brought forward as a heir to his fortune.

That Thomas White was named as his "father" on his marriage certificate proves nothing.

Thanks for that. I had thought that father/husband may have died prior to birth of child but I presume that that would be different and father's name would have been noted on birth certificate.

There are two or three things that might get you a bit further. First see if you can find your gggrandfather on the census and see whom he is living with and perhaps a few names in the locality. Secondly see if you can find a baptism and check the original entry, there's sometimes the father's name added in in some form or other. Thirdly see if there is a subsequent marriage for his mother

Hello Linda
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have a date of birth for Thomas. His son William was born on 16.03.1854. Mother Elizabeth according to birth CT. By the time William married in 1874 Thomas was noted as deceased on the marrige CT. So I have no real proof that there was a marriage at this stage or that Thomas existed. My tree is the WHITE BULLOCK FAMILY TREE if you would like to look. Thanks again.

Thank you for your reply.
I would like to try to find a baptism but am not sure where to start. Thomas's son William was born 1854 District of Cathedral Division in the County of Chester and City and County of the City of Chester. William was married at the Primitive Methodist Chappel George Street in the District of Chester County of Chester/Flint and City of Chester. William's address was at the time of his marriage in 1874 7 Gloucester Street Chester. I am not familiar with Chester as I live on the other side of the world. I am assuming that these places are close in which case who do I contact for a Baptism record????? I have strenuously searched census records but have not come across anything that looks like a match in Chester but have found William in Eastbourne prior to moving to Australia.
Thanks again.
