I didint know that skild was such a big thing in Macclesfield. The two postings right below yours about the Allens are mine and they and the family they married into in Macclesfield were listed on census records as "silk manufacturing" Good luck.

Macclesfield is known as Silk Town- the football team are the Silk Men and a newish by pass which cuts the town in half is known as the Silk Road.

My grandparents both worked in the silk factories there in the early 1900's.

Macclesfield is also well known for it's silk embroidered pictures done by a company caleld Brocklehurst and Whiston(google them)

just happened upon this message board when trying to find out more information re silk weavers.

I was born in Macclesfield as was my husband,(we are still in the UK but not Macclesfield)
his great grandfather Peter Wright went to Paterson NJ IN 1880 with some of his family due to the decline in Silk manufacturing in the UK.
One mystery remains, his son Peter, my husbands grandfather is reputed to have formed the 1st Football team in the US, we have a photo dated 1884, stating formation of club 1880.
Peter Wright Captain.
I cannot find any record of his passage to the US with or without the family.
He either didn't go or returned soon as his family were all born in Macclesfield.
Maybe family history refers to Peter senior forming the club not his son.
Can anyone help solve this mystery which has gone on for more years than I care to remember.
Patricia Wright
