Thank you for your reply.
I would like to try to find a baptism but am not sure where to start. Thomas's son William was born 1854 District of Cathedral Division in the County of Chester and City and County of the City of Chester. William was married at the Primitive Methodist Chappel George Street in the District of Chester County of Chester/Flint and City of Chester. William's address was at the time of his marriage in 1874 7 Gloucester Street Chester. I am not familiar with Chester as I live on the other side of the world. I am assuming that these places are close in which case who do I contact for a Baptism record????? I have strenuously searched census records but have not come across anything that looks like a match in Chester but have found William in Eastbourne prior to moving to Australia.
Thanks again.

Hello Linda
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have a date of birth for Thomas. His son William was born on 16.03.1854. Mother Elizabeth according to birth CT. By the time William married in 1874 Thomas was noted as deceased on the marrige CT. So I have no real proof that there was a marriage at this stage or that Thomas existed. My tree is the WHITE BULLOCK FAMILY TREE if you would like to look. Thanks again.

There are two or three things that might get you a bit further. First see if you can find your gggrandfather on the census and see whom he is living with and perhaps a few names in the locality. Secondly see if you can find a baptism and check the original entry, there's sometimes the father's name added in in some form or other. Thirdly see if there is a subsequent marriage for his mother

I'm related to MacIntyre Boswell and have only been able to trace the line back as far as Solivano and Comfort Boswell. You appear to have done alot of research on the Boswells and I was wondering whether you would be able to help me with their ancestors.

Thanks

Paul

just happened upon this message board when trying to find out more information re silk weavers.

I was born in Macclesfield as was my husband,(we are still in the UK but not Macclesfield)
his great grandfather Peter Wright went to Paterson NJ IN 1880 with some of his family due to the decline in Silk manufacturing in the UK.
One mystery remains, his son Peter, my husbands grandfather is reputed to have formed the 1st Football team in the US, we have a photo dated 1884, stating formation of club 1880.
Peter Wright Captain.
I cannot find any record of his passage to the US with or without the family.
He either didn't go or returned soon as his family were all born in Macclesfield.
Maybe family history refers to Peter senior forming the club not his son.
Can anyone help solve this mystery which has gone on for more years than I care to remember.
Patricia Wright

No father named on the birth certificate means that the mother could not get the father to acknowlege his child. This was a legal requirement to prevent a child being registered to some well to do man - and later being brought forward as a heir to his fortune.

That Thomas White was named as his "father" on his marriage certificate proves nothing.
The history lessons are the most fun as they bring the family to life.

yes I found the other board and contacted Elaine who already has responded. We have much to share.

While online family trees do carry alot of erroneous info -they also are able to aide one over a slump. The key is to discern and verify. If not for an online tree I would only be on generation 3 instead of generation 5. So I am very grateful to all who have put me on the path to my roots.

I find it all very exciting
Thank you Again
Ellee

Hi Neil. They are all parish records that are found in International Genealogical Index (www.familysearch.org). You can find them for yourself by using the Advanced Search feature under the Search Records tab, and choosing IGI.

I began by finding birth records for the two people that you knew were related, Maria and Thomas Allen, which showed the same parents. Then I did a parent search in IGI, by putting in the father's first and last names and the mother's first name (the only other items you enter are the region, the country, and the county). This brings up a list of births to those parents in that county - of course, not all may be the ones you want, but it is a very helpful feature in general.

Another way to do this, but then you have to check the parents' names for each entry, is to use Hugh Wallis' IGI search feature, choose England, Cheshire, and Macclesfield, and type Allen into the search engine. It brings up the list of births for the chosen parish for a specific period in time - in this case, 1793 to 1812, and 1813-1837.

There is a Cheshire BMD index but it only starts with 1837 when civil registration began so it is not helpful for the period of these births. http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

Hope this helps.
Rosemary

Hi Patricia, my name is Margaret Weston and I also have an ancestor who came to Patterson from Macclesfield involved with the silk industry. In fact he died leaving a patent for an invention he made in regards to the silk weaving.
His name was Buckley Rowbothom Weston. He spent quite a few years travelling from his native Macclesfield coming here to Australia and the goldfields, then to New Zealand and back to Macclesfield and then the final Journey to Patterson.

Regards,

Margaret

Hi Ellee

I'm so glad you've managed to establish contact with your cousin Elaine in Oz and are ready to share information with her.

As regards the placing of one's family tree in the public domain this is of course a matter of personal choice and will be influenced by several factors, not least being the commonness of the surname(s) involved.

My eight great-grandparents are a JONES, two WILLIAMS's, an EVANS, a DAVIES, a HUGHES, a GRIFFITHS and a CAMPBELL.
When I mentioned these names on a couple of mailing lists several years ago I was so inundated with responses from all parts of the globe, and for so long afterwards, that I vowed never to do so again!

And I of course find with alarming regularity instances of people having 'latched on' to ancestors of mine who they've noticed in one of the many free on-line data-bases and who they've placed in their own family tree simply because the name, the location and/or the time-scale 'fit'.

However, I do accept that for names somewhat 'rarer' than mine then on-line trees can be a most valuable tool.

Best wishes for your own research, and please give Elaine my regards when you next speak to her.

.
A rapid correction to my last post - Thomas (b1795 Little Meols) was Nathaniel & Catherine's SECOND son, the eldest being your ancestor Joseph HUNTINGTON (b1792 Little Meols) who married Esther WESTHEAD on 27 December 1815 in Liverpool St Peter?

I doubt that you and I will be cousins, since my connection to this family (hence it's inclusion in my extended tree) is only via a couple of distant sibling marriages.

I'm not a believer in on-line family trees, having discovered so much erroneous information concerning my own direct lines placed there by others and which has never been corrected even after being drawn to their attention.

Incidentally, AlisonWilliams wrote on 14 December 2005 :-

>The family certainly didn't move around much.....

In actual fact, Nathaniel & Catherine nee BALL's eldest son Thomas HUNTINGTON (b1795 Little Meols) crossed the River Mersey to Liverpool, where all eleven of his children were born.
This branch was ultimately responsible for Huntington's Bakery, popular in the Edge Lane area of Liverpool during the 1900's and mentioned several times in the thread triggered by this post :-

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ENG-MERSEYSIDE...

The lady in Queensland Australia (Elaine) who contributed to this thread almost certainly IS a blood-relative of yours?

For anything pre the 1837 compulsory registration you would need to see the actual Parish records. Held at Chester record office and various other places.

If you are nowhere near Cheshire you can always get the film of the record sent to your local LDS Mormon reading rooms for around £5.

My mum went to Christchurch school in Macc......long demolished, as is the church itself.

Carol
