Hi Laurie

I very much appreciate you taking the time to help me, Laurie - it's very generous of you.

As I vaguely alluded to in my second post, there was a family story surrounding Carrie's birth and her being looked after by Fanny. Just so that you're in possession of the story as well as the facts, I'll briefly tell it! It was said that Carrie's mum died shortly after giving birth to her and that was why she ended up with Fanny. It was also said that Carrie had an older sister who was sent to a different family - the Wearnes. The Wearnes were thought to be a wealthy family in contrast to Fanny. Carrie never saw her alleged sister again. There was thought to be some connection to Carnebone Farm, Laity too, so it's possible one or both of her parents worked there. I didn't explain this before as I didn't want the stories to detract from the facts, particularly as I've begun to suspect that the story may have been an elaborate lie to cover an illegitimate birth. However, it's possible it's true and may help you if you know where to look!

As for the marriage certificate of Carrie Williams and James Harold Goldsworthy other details are:

Carrie's father - John Williams, tin miner, deceased
James' father - Henry Goldsworthy, mining engineer, deceased

Married in the presence of: Leslie G or C? Uren and Arthur E. Gould-Porter ?? - not 100% sure that's right

They were married on 2nd Sept 1922 at the Register Office, Penzance.

I don't know if its any help but at the time of their marriage, James lived at 52 Church Street, Helston and Carrie lived at what I think says St Hilary Farm, Marazion.

As additional info, Carrie was still living as a boarder with Fanny on the 1911 census.

Thanks again, Laurie.

Clare

Hi Clare.

Yes I am still looking, can you tell me any other names on her marriage certificate, they can sometimes help in the search, did she have any sibblings, I have trawled through a few obscure Cornish web sites but no luck so far, this is rare for Cornish records, they are usually so good.

Laurie

Hi Tom

They don't seem to be people I've come across yet, but I'd say it was likely that they would be in my tree too - Goldsworthy is not that common a name.

I haven't done a lot of research on the Goldsworthy side as I've been wracking my brains with Carrie Williams, but I'll get onto it and let you know if I find your names in my tree.

Cheers
Clare

Hello Clare,

I have an interest in the Goldsworthys. I have been looking for descendents of Edward Passmore Newton b. 1893 Hayle and Loveday Ann Goldsworthy b. 1894 Crowan/Helston, who were married March 1925 in Sithney.

Loveday was one of six siblings, parents Charles Goldsworthy b. 1865 Crowan and Caroline Emma (Unknown) b. Crowan. Charles was one of 7 children, with a brother James H. Goldsworthy b. abt 1870 Crowan.

Is there a connection to your James Harold Goldsworthy? If so I would be interested in exchanging information.

Tom

Thanks for taking the time to look for me, Laurie - she is proving quite elusive!

I do have her marriage certificate:
She married James Harold Goldsworthy on the 2nd Spet 1922 in Penzance, Cornwall and is on her certificate as Carrie. Her father's name is down as John Williams, deceased (which is how we came to assume that her father's name was John).

I also have her death certificate - she died on the 5th July 1988 in Gweek, Cornwall.

It's ironic that the relative I'm having the most trouble tracking a down a birth certificate for is one of the people I knew and a close part of the family!

Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.

Clare

Thanks, Laurie.

To clarify, no I don't have a birth certificate for Carrie. Caroline Williams could well have been her - as you say Falmouth is pretty near by - but I think I've found Caroline's census entry in the 1901 census and I know that that's not my Carrie.

Thanks for finding that one though, it's not one I'd investigated before. The Crisilda Caroline Williams that comes up in the same search could be a lead, but I have no way of telling at the moment - I haven't ordered the certificate, but I don't know how I could prove it was her even with the certificate as I don't know what her parents names were. Having said that, the original story was that her dad's name was John, but since we've failed to find any trace of her birth, we're beginning to think John Williams was conveniently made up and that her mum was unmarried at her birth, and hence her going to someone who took in 'children whose mum's didn't want them'.

Thanks for your help. Any ideas where to go from here?

Hi All

I'm new here and am a complete amateur at family history research! I've been doing it on and off for a few years and have a major stumbling block.

My great gran's birth certificate and therefore parents are proving quite elusive! Her name was Carrie Williams and she was supposedly born on the 9th Nov 1900, but this may be approximate, in or around Wendron, Cornwall. The problem is that we think her mum may have given her away. We know she was brought up by a lady called Fanny Allen (she is on the 1901 census as a boarder at Fanny's place in Helston, Cornwall) and it seems that Fanny took in children whose 'mother's didn't want them' (according to a relative of Fanny's). Fanny Allen was very poor (on 1901 census as a charwoman) and had quite a few children of her own, in addition to several she had taken in. There's no way she could have afforded to feed and clothe these children (and I know that they had very little growing up as Carrie told stories of what it was like to her daughter), so it is assumed she was paid to take in these boarder children, which probably helped her afford to feed her own children. Presumably this would come under some 'poor law' records or something like this? Any idea where I should be looking for info on payments received by Fanny by the parish as this seems to be my only lead at the moment.

Carrie was married in 1922 to James Harold Goldsworthy and died in 1988 in Gweek, Cornwall. She was a great lady and I'd love to be able to unravel this mystery for her daughter (my great aunt, who I'm very close too) as well as myself.

Any advice on where to go next or how to find out about any Poor Law records would be very welcome.

Thanks

Hi there - I am looking for any help with tracing my great grandfathers and grandmothers parents. My G. Grandfather was Henry Howard Roberts and was a school teacher and later a schoolmaster - born in DEC 1883 in Wendron Cornwall and later bringing up his family in Redruth he married Ellen Jane Hocking (born abt 1885). I know as much as Henry's mothers name was also Ellen (or in the 1981 census H.L.E Roberts, however, I am totally stuck on who is father was as he must have died shortly after Henry was born. As for Henry's wife Ellen I know very little - except she was born in Gwennap, Cornwall. They had 6 children. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sarah

Mother Mary Davis born around 1846 had four other children no identifiable father, she then married Henry Young born around 1845 - it may be that he is the father of all the children however William is listed as stepson. Ideally we wanted to trace his time with the DCLI.

Thanks

kevin

Hi, Helen.

We have a great connection here. Your grandmother Mary Tonkin was the first cousin of my grandmother Matilda Jane Tonkin (who married Arthur Duck before emigrating to America). You and I share Josiah Tonkin Sr. and his wife Matilda Bond-Tonkin as g-g-grandparents. Indeed, I even have a number of old photos of Josiah Tonkin Sr. (In photos during his older years, he looks like Santa Claus. In photos taken when he was a bit younger, he could easily have been mistaken for Robert E. Lee. :-) )

Since I first posted my query (Gawd, has it been 9 years already?!), I've reconstructed quite a lot about this family -- all very well documented. I'm sure you have info that I do not have yet and vice versa. We should definitely compare notes.

Jim Duck
Annapolis, MD

I am a descendant of the Tonkin-Freeman-Drew side of the family.

The Matilda you refer to is Matilda Jane Bond.

I have some old Tonkin-Freeman-Drew family photos, if you're interested in them.

I only have Matilda's parents but not any farther back. And on the Tonkin side, I have as far back as Edward Tonkin and Ann Northey. Actually, I have a little farther back than that, but the information is suspect, since I can't find records to actually support it...

Please feel free to email me!

Hi Marnie,
I took the information direct from the Endellion baptism list. I am sorry but it does not give any information as to the parents of Samuel or the maiden name of Ann. The only other Pollard baptism that is listed is of John, son of Charles and Hannah 5 Nov 1741.
This along with what I have sent previously covers the Pollards completely in the baptisms from 1740 - 1850 in Endellion. Emily Jane is also St. Endellion. I thought the Samuel Hicks was interesting. The Hicks ref. is only listed on that particular baptism.
I also looked in the Endellion marriages that I have and there is only one male ref. which is Charls Pollowrd m. Hannah Phillips 25 Dec 1729. The spelling errors above are the transcription. There are no females listed. I also took a look at Cornwall OPC and there is one Samuel Pollard who married an Ann Evens listed. Marriage took place 1815 in Constantine.
My guess would be that the first Henry passed and another son named Henry was born. I did check the burials that I have that run from 1813 - 1837 and did not find any Pollard listings.

I hope that this information was helpful to you, Joan

Hello, Thank you for the information you have provided. Would you be able to tell me if the two baptisms for Henry were baptisms or one his birth date and the other his baptism date. Also is there a maiden name listed for William's mother Anne.
Can you tell me what district the birth of Emily Jane was in. I am not sure if this is the same Samuel and Anne that gave birth to William and Henry.
I was informed that the Samuel (william's father)I am looking for was a keeper of a school in St Endellion so I am not sure about the mine profession. If you can help with any clarification that would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Marnie

Hello, There is a William born to Samuel and Anne baptised 29 Sep 1819, Henry also 29 Sep 1819, Henry 7 Sep 1817. Listed also is "Superintentdent of a Mine" I would assume as Samuel's profession. These were private baptisms and Wm. appears to have been 3 months old at the time of his baptism. There is also an Emily Jane 24 Feb 1828 to Samuel Hicks Pollard and Anne. At Samuel is listed as a "Mine Agent".

Hello;

I am looking for information as it relates to the Down family from Devonshire. Right now, I have a Thomas Down b. in approx 1796 from Braddon Clovelly, Devonshire. He married an Ann Tasker as early as 1815. She was from Eggsford, Devonshire. I know they moved to Egloskerry, Cornwall by 1829. Five known children: Elizabeth b. abt 1816, Henry b. 1818, James b. 27 Sept 1829, Emaline b. abt 1833, Ann b. 16 Nov 1834. James onwards were definately b. in Egloskerry. Thomas and Ann with at least James & Henry immigrated to Canada in approx 1851.

If anyone can help me with who Thomas' parents might have been or the decendants of any of the children outside of Henry/James it would be appreciated.

Bruce

Hi Peter
Laurence is my GG Uncle his brother Christopher is my GG Grandfather.I found the family tree someone in America has done a lot of it. James is buried there. He went there it seems during the potatoe famine. Jane followed 5 years later with the 2 girls a William who was about 5years old. James had not yet met William. Christopher and Laurence were left in Ireland with (Mary) Janes family. Christopher got an inheritence from his uncles I think Janes brothers who died within a week of each other. They were not married. The inheritance came when Christopher was living in Australia on the Monaro High Plains. Anymore info needed please contact me.
Thanks maree

Thanks for your reply. Jane or Mary Jane was a Reddy. I stumbled apon the Geraghty family tree. Someone in America has done a lot of it. James is buried in USA. He went there during the potatoe famine. Jane met him there 5 years later with the daughters and a son William that James had not yet met. Christopher and Laurence were left with their mothers family then they immigrated christopher to Australia and Laurence to NZ.
Cheers Maree. They had 5 children.

Hello Peggy,

The same posting is under Cornwall and Mellen, both by me.

I didn’t have all the dates at hand when I did the posting, but hoped that if somebody had all these Mellen family members on their tree, they’d recognise them.

Thankfully I received one response which seems to confirm that Mary Ann Mellen is in fact the daughter of Joseph and Sophia, and granddaughter of Samuel, which is one of the key pieces of info I was attempting to clarify for somebody else. My ancestor is Thomas, Samuel’s brother.

Thomas Mellen and Joyce were both born around 1773 and married in 1794. Prior to marrying Thomas, Joyce had been married to a man called White, and I don’t know her maiden name.

Samuel Mellen was born 1805 and Thomas 1797. There were 5 other siblings.

Regards,
Karen
