Down Family

Hello;

I am looking for information as it relates to the Down family from Devonshire. Right now, I have a Thomas Down b. in approx 1796 from Braddon Clovelly, Devonshire. He married an Ann Tasker as early as 1815. She was from Eggsford, Devonshire. I know they moved to Egloskerry, Cornwall by 1829. Five known children: Elizabeth b. abt 1816, Henry b. 1818, James b. 27 Sept 1829, Emaline b. abt 1833, Ann b. 16 Nov 1834. James onwards were definately b. in Egloskerry. Thomas and Ann with at least James & Henry immigrated to Canada in approx 1851.

If anyone can help me with who Thomas' parents might have been or the decendants of any of the children outside of Henry/James it would be appreciated.

Bruce

Hi Peter
Laurence is my GG Uncle his brother Christopher is my GG Grandfather.I found the family tree someone in America has done a lot of it. James is buried there. He went there it seems during the potatoe famine. Jane followed 5 years later with the 2 girls a William who was about 5years old. James had not yet met William. Christopher and Laurence were left in Ireland with (Mary) Janes family. Christopher got an inheritence from his uncles I think Janes brothers who died within a week of each other. They were not married. The inheritance came when Christopher was living in Australia on the Monaro High Plains. Anymore info needed please contact me.
Thanks maree

Thanks for your reply. Jane or Mary Jane was a Reddy. I stumbled apon the Geraghty family tree. Someone in America has done a lot of it. James is buried in USA. He went there during the potatoe famine. Jane met him there 5 years later with the daughters and a son William that James had not yet met. Christopher and Laurence were left with their mothers family then they immigrated christopher to Australia and Laurence to NZ.
Cheers Maree. They had 5 children.

Hello Peggy,

The same posting is under Cornwall and Mellen, both by me.

I didn’t have all the dates at hand when I did the posting, but hoped that if somebody had all these Mellen family members on their tree, they’d recognise them.

Thankfully I received one response which seems to confirm that Mary Ann Mellen is in fact the daughter of Joseph and Sophia, and granddaughter of Samuel, which is one of the key pieces of info I was attempting to clarify for somebody else. My ancestor is Thomas, Samuel’s brother.

Thomas Mellen and Joyce were both born around 1773 and married in 1794. Prior to marrying Thomas, Joyce had been married to a man called White, and I don’t know her maiden name.

Samuel Mellen was born 1805 and Thomas 1797. There were 5 other siblings.

Regards,
Karen
Included in the children of Thomas and Joyce Mellen were Thomas Mellen, who married Frances (Fanny) Phillips and Samuel Mellen, who married Nancy Mitchell.

Thomas and Fanny had a number of children in St Austell, including Caroline, my great great great grandmother who married Richard James.

Included among the Samuel and Nancy's children was Joseph Mellen. Joseph married Sophia Hocking (?) had numerous children and, it seems, later lived in Australia. Joseph and Sophia are buried in Moonta, South Australia.

Does anybody have information on the children of Joseph and Sophia? I think they may have had a daughter Mary Ann Mellen.

Thank you,
Karen

Hi
I am descended from Thomas Henry Warne, Son of Thomas Warne (Pewterer) and Charlotte Sarah Abel who lived at 113 Blackfriars Road Surrey. They had children Charlotte Cealia, Thomas Henry, Henry, John, James and Eliza. Thomas Henry Married Mary Anne Jarvis in 1852 (she died in 1867) and he moved to Australia and remarried Elizabeth Millichap in 1868
I believe the Son John Warne may be the same as your John Warne. I believe he took over the family business and became well known as a Pewterer. In the 1861 census It shows at the same address as Thomas Warne was in the 1841 census, John Warne 27 Elizabeth Warne 23 and John Warne (son) 2.

I note that you post that I am replying to is over 8 years old and was wondering if you think we have common ancestors and if you have any more information about them.

Geoff

Hello. My name is Joanna Webber and I actually live at Lower Trevelmond Farm which I believe was the first "Trevelmond Farm" (we are to the east of the village). Our farm name was originally Trevelmond Farm but when the other farm was built/renamed and used the same name we put the 'Lower' bit infront to distinguish between them. My great grandfather owned the farm before us, Wilfred Webber. But we arent entirely sure who had it before that. That is why we are researching it after spotting the farm on a map that is held at St Michael's Mount in Penzance. The 'newer' Trevelmond farm (located to the west side of the village) and is owned by the Chenoweth family. Hope this helps if you are still searching for information. And if we find anymore out I shall try to post it on here for you.

They were accompanied by their 4 children: Peter Northy Rowe (my great grandfather), William, Catharine and Stephen.

I am interested to make contact with descendants of Peter's 2 brothers and his sister. I have no further information other than his sister lived near Adelaide around 1910. Don't know if she was married at that time but assume so.

Peter married Mary Louisa Mitchell in Cross Roads Moonta in 1880 and moved to Maldon Victoria around 1885. Then to Bendigo Victoria. He was a miner in Moonta and Maldon.

Hope you are out there somewhere family!!

Can anyone help. please?

It is headed "1803" and "Redruth Marriages" then "57" which presumably is page 57. The entry which interests me is as follows, "John Manley & Elizth. Manley, sojourner. 26 Feb 1803".

John Manley appears in my Tree and he did mary an Elizabeth in 1803 but why does she have the same name (Manley) is it just a mistake? And what is the signifigance of her being styled as a "sojourner" (someone temporarily living in a place" ?

Hello Lesa: Since I am Canadian, I have no idea where St. Keverne is located in UK. My maiden name is Pulkingham and my father always said he thought it should be Pulkinghorn/Polkinghorn(e). I am stuck on my ggrandfather, James Pulkingham who turns up in Ontario in the 1971 Canadian Census as 38 years of age; b c1833; had a father named William born in UK (no mother name documented).

After 12 years of searching I came upon the death certificate of my paternal grandfather(Charles Pulkingham) with his father stated to be James Pulkingham born in St Minver. This is my first breakthrough for info over in UK. Checking out the Cornwall archives I have found 2 families with head of h/hold "William" who have boys falling in that age/born criterea in 1841 UK census.

James Polkingham, 12; b c 1829; Cornwall, Redruth, UK
James Polkingham, 2; b c 1833; Cornwall, Breage, Helston.
Can either of these two have anything to do with you?
Judy
I wonder if there is anybody who can provide information on Joseph Rowett Mellen of St Austell, Cornwall. Joseph R Mellen was the son of Joseph Mellen and Mary? Rowett. Joseph senior had a number of siblings, among them was Caroline James (nee Mellen) and her brother (perhaps a twin) Thomas Mellen, from St Austell. Their mother was Frances (Fanny) Mellen (nee Philips). Caroline and Thomas migrated to Australia. I wonder if perhaps Joseph Rowett Mellen in time did the same.

Hello. I am researching the Foulds family and have been hunting for Isabella(Walker)(Foulds)(Chapman)Tregidgo for some time. Isabella was born in Gateshead, Durham in 1850. Her first husband, Thomas Humphrey Foulds, died at Mile End in 1886. Her second husband, Isaac Chapman, died in 1903, also in Mile End. I did find that she married John J. Tregidgo in 1912 at Mile End. If you have any other information about her, especially where and when she passed away, I would be thrilled. My husband is a descendant of Isabella and her first husband, Thomas H. Foulds.

Re: Trevelmond Farm nr Liskeard Cornwall

Joanna,

Thank you for reponding to my post. We visited Trevelmond again in late 2007, this time 'finding' the Chenoweth Trevelmond Farm. We metthe owner but he couldn't tell us much about the history of the house. He didn't mention your home.I can add little to the picture, all I know for sure is that the ROBERTS family moved from Trewen Farm after the 1851 Census and that William ROBERTS,Farmer of 45 acres and family were listed at Trevelmond Farm in the 1861 Census. In the 1871 and 1881 censuses the family is recorded at Trevelmond, Thomas Peter (Head) farmer 57 acres and in 1881 (after Jane ROBERTS death in 1879), Samuel ROBERTS (Head) farmer 56 acres. Samuel who had immigrated to Australia in 1853 was his mothers executor and must have come back to settle the estate before returning to Australia, no doubt after selling.the property. In that census James OATES is listed at Trevelmond Farm, farmer of 44 acres. The wills of Jane and William just note place of residence as Trevelmond..with nothing to identify the property.

Unfortunately I can do nothing to clarify the picture, but would be very interested in any pieces you may have to fit into the jigsaw.
Thank you,
Sallie
