My great-great grandparents were Martin Askew, married 1828 to Eleanor Craenor. The Askew children were Sarah, Frances, Ruth, James, Thomas, Martin, William, and Elizabeth. Any connections?

I had a 3 x great-grandfather called Hugh Stephenson, born between 1783 and 1786, the illegitimate son of farmer Joseph Stephenson from Northumberland (Alwinton?) and some unknown female. Joseph and Hugh ended their days in Scotland. I have just learned that Hugh had the middle name Eskew, a variant of Askew.

A Hugh Eskew married Eleanor Dixon at Whicham, Cumberland, in 1753, and they are probably the Hugh "Askew" and Eleanor - mentioned in the IGI as having numerous children at Whitehaven between 1757 and 1778, including daughters called Jane and Betty Askew in 1761 and 1764 respectively. I am now wondering if either of these girls could have been the mother of my Hugh Stephenson. It's possible that Joseph could have farmed in Cumberland, or had other business dealings there, before moving up to Scotland.

Does anybody have details of the marriages of Hugh and Eleanor Askew/Eskew's daughters?

Harry
