Hi,

Currently looking for anyone on my grandma's side of the family. These names sound very familiar, since my grandma passed I don't have much to go on but lots of family pictures of her growing up.
Her Name was Vera Harvey born Sept 24, 1924 in Barrow in Furness, her brothers were Raymond, Bernard, Gordon, Norman, sisters were Doris and Mary. Vera married a Royden Walker and moved to Michigan. Can anyone help find some relatives or can someone point me in the right direction.

Thank You,
Jenny

I suppose you have twigged that County Down can easily be misunderstood as County Durham and vice versa. It's happened to me in noisy discos.
Also there is a Sunderland in Cumberland as well as Lancashire and Scotland and there are Newcastles all over the place - so when an Irishman told the enumerator he was from Newcastle he may well have been put down as being from Newcastle in Norhumberland.
Bryan
(from County Durham)

Hedleys in Cleator, Whitehaven, Ireland and Northumberland
Andrew Hedley b1824/5 County Down Ireland was the brother of my gg grandfather who disappeared off the radar after he got married c1850, turned up in the 1881 census a blast engine man in Furnace Court, Cleator Moor.

From census 1861, 1871, 1881 I find that there were a lot more than just Andrew. (And from some C of E parish records online which I now can't find again)
It is not, as I thought, a couple of Irishmen finding work in England... there were a LOAD of Hedleys there at that period and what's more they were more or less all in the one street and all born in Ireland.
So a load of unrelated Irishmen called Hedley going to England looking for work don't just happen to all end up in the same street in England!

Andrew and his wife Eliza Jane Booman had a child Isabella baptised in James St Scotch Presbyterian Church in Whitehaven. I then find that Hedleys have been baptised here since 17c !!!!!
Other children were John, born Co Down, Henry born Whitehaven, twins Isabella and Eleanor, 1854, Cleator (Eleanor married John Shylan), James born 1859 in Cleator

Another brother who disappeared (no trace after marriage to Anna Frew) was Joseph. He would have been born about 1830/31.
There is , in the 1881 census an innkeeper called Joseph Hedley at 55, Henry St in Workington. His wife is Annie born Ireland 3 years later than him and living with them is daughter Margaret Larkin and grandson Joseph E Larkin.

Tradition has it that "our" Hedleys are from Northumberland but I now wonder if it wasn't just happen-chance that all those 19c County Down Hedleys ended up in that particular area... perhaps from Northumberland but by way of Cumberland for a hundred years? Also I've seen reference in records recently of addresses like Newcastle, Cumberland and Sunderland, Cumberland so obviously they were easily and often confused.

In County Down I am back to about 7 to 10 men all born c1800 and it's really hard to get information earlier than this in Ireland.
The men's names are William, Joseph, Robert, Henry, James, Allen, Andrew. I say 7-10 because I have individual records (mostly as fathers at marriages)of a few Williams, Josephs, Roberts and a couple of James & there's no way of telling if they are the same ones.

Apparently my gg Grandfather "mentioned the Northumberland Fusiliers"

So if you are a Northumberland or Cumberland Hedley and know of family going to Ireland 18th cent or earlier (or coming from Ireland 19th cent) please let me know

thanks
peter
It looks as though your biggest problem will be because National BMD Records only go back to 1837. However, it appears that, initially at least, you are trying to find the birth place of Joseph and Mary. Can we have some more clues?
What are the "different places" given?
In which census records have you found Joseph?
What year was their first child born?

I would be very interested in what you may have on the Coward family from Barrow-in-Furness. My grandmother came over from England in the early 1900's. My information is her parents:James Newton and Hannah Woodburn; James Newton's parents as David Newton and Elizabeth Coward and I have their children as Sarah Margaret b.5 Sept 1858; Harriet b.7 Oct 1860 and married Robert Kirkby; James b.23 Mar 1862; John b.21Feb 1864; Mary Jane b.2 April 1865; Louiza Ann b. 18 Aug 1867 and married a Blackwell; Thomas Hopwood b.28 Nov 1869; Eliza b.25 Jan 1862 and married a Graham; and Ada Caroline b. 19 April 1874. The first 2 children were born in Whicham, the rest in Millom; I just noticed Eliza's birth year is out of sinc - maybe I have an error there. I would greatly appreciate any information you could forward onto me. Thanks so much.
Diane Crilley Shearer
203 W. He married my Gt grandmother (a Hodgson) from Spark Bridge, Colton and went to live in Ulverston. I can only give you that info at the moment as it is late and I have just found this site. I see there is no mention of Hodgson in your list. But you deserve all the best in your search for such a wonderful list. Best wishes.

Hope you are the James Gould that contacted me, I think everyone in the family must have been told they descended from the Black Douglas (hair colouring) opposed to the Red Douglas (hair colouring) I think that James the Black Douglas was just a more romantic ancestor technically we all descend from one ancestor a William anyway. I daresay all the Douglas's in Cumberland are cousins I know we had relatives in Longtown as we visited them in 1949 and 1957 but how they fit into the family I can only guess. I do know that our relatives around the Carlisle area had fair hair and blue eyes. How even genetics pass on from mother's too.
Heather

Hello Helen
I'm wondering if you've come across a Bell family with a mother
named Mary (or Ann, depending on the Census! Maybe Mary
Ann?), born about 1820 in Southerfield (yet to find her last name).
She married an unknown Bell and had these children (that I know
of thus far)

Jane Bell, born Blencop?, Cumberland about 1852
Benjamin Bell, born Longrigg about 1854
Mary Bell, born Kelsick, about 1861

I've yet to find their birth registrations so I don't have any certs to
look for their father's name.

Any help would be appreciated.
I am the grandson of Joseph Shackley, however I am descended from his second wife, not from Amy Alice Ponsonby, who I believe is buried in Pittsburgh, PA. Joseph and Amy had four children (my dad's half-siblings) who all lived in the Pittsburgh area. I have pictures of the family from the early 1900s if you want to contact me. I believe the emigrated to the US in 1906.

Hi - I am researching the Hoggs of Cleator, originally from Ireland.

James Hogg born circa 1831 in Ireland (father Hugh Hogg) married Ann Kirkpatrick (father James Kirkpatrick) on 21 June 1857.

They had the following children, all born in Cleator according to the census. Sarah (1858), Eleanor (1860, married Henry Stewart), James (1862), Mary Jane (1866, married Andrew Kerr), Ann (1868), John (1870) and Jane (1879).

I have been unable to find this family in the 1861 census but have the 1871 and 1881. I think James may have had a brother Hugh Hogg. If anyone has any connection to or information regarding this family it would be great to hear from you.
Thanks
Tracy Barlow

I just wondered if you have any more information on Ada Maria Cork married to James Carr in 1895. The bit about her family connections with tea plantations in Singapore sounds interesting. I think Ada Maria comes into the family tree I am working on although not on a direct line but my husband is possibly directly linked through her brother George Percy Cork. Any information would be helpful.
Many thanks
