The MIDDLETON and Kendal in your message caught my eye.
I'm trying to trace a David MIDDLETON, born Tebay nr Kendal, Westmoreland, now Cumbria.
This is for a friend who would like to find David and invite him to attend a 40th anniversary party in the UK in January 2006.
Known info:
Would now be 59-61ish, used to work for Leyland Motors Ltd (a subsidiary of British Leyland) 1963 to late 1960s, no brothers, 2 married sisters.
Known to have been in Columbia, Sth America late 1970s or early 1980s, and believed to have a son Davidista.

My friend would love to hear from anyone who can help track David down.

Oxley Ancestors

My husbands family were from the Ulverston area. Most of his ancesters are buried in the church grave yard in Ulverston. His fathers name was George he had three brothers some of which still have family living in the area.

Matthew family of Cumberland

I'm searching for any information about Isabella Kelly nee Matthew married in 1898 to a Joseph Kelly.
Their children Daughter Ida H Kelly born 1899 in Portsmouth Hampshire and Son Joseph H Kelly born 1905?
They emigrated to Halifax Nova Scotia 24th Mar 1911 on the Victorian.
Isabella died in the Halifax explosion on 6th Dec 1917 and her Husband Joseph Kelly returned to Liverpool England in 1920.

It looks as though your biggest problem will be because National BMD Records only go back to 1837. However, it appears that, initially at least, you are trying to find the birth place of Joseph and Mary. Can we have some more clues?
What are the "different places" given?
In which census records have you found Joseph?
What year was their first child born?

I also have been confused by the different places of birth for the Simpsons. I believe Margaret's maiden name was Sharp. I can help with the marriage of Frances who married Robert Chadwick on 30th September 1863 at St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire.

I would be very interested in what you may have on the Coward family from Barrow-in-Furness. My grandmother came over from England in the early 1900's. My information is her parents:James Newton and Hannah Woodburn; James Newton's parents as David Newton and Elizabeth Coward and I have their children as Sarah Margaret b.5 Sept 1858; Harriet b.7 Oct 1860 and married Robert Kirkby; James b.23 Mar 1862; John b.21Feb 1864; Mary Jane b.2 April 1865; Louiza Ann b. 18 Aug 1867 and married a Blackwell; Thomas Hopwood b.28 Nov 1869; Eliza b.25 Jan 1862 and married a Graham; and Ada Caroline b. 19 April 1874. The first 2 children were born in Whicham, the rest in Millom; I just noticed Eliza's birth year is out of sinc - maybe I have an error there. I would greatly appreciate any information you could forward onto me. Thanks so much.

Dear Russ, I have Braithwaites from Kendal, my gt grandfather coming from there to Ulverston. He married my Gt grandmother (a Hodgson) from Spark Bridge, Colton and went to live in Ulverston. I can only give you that info at the moment as it is late and I have just found this site. I see there is no mention of Hodgson in your list. Has anyone any connection with George Bell b 1815 Kirklinton, married Susannah Darling b 1819 of Workington. George was a blacksmith, one time at George Sowerby Lane, Carlisle, later, Soaperey, Workington. Children: Sarah 1841, Susannah 1844, Agnes 1849, George 1851, William 1852, Martin 1856 & Martha 1859. After George (Snr)s death, wife Susannah moved to Prudoe.

Hope you are the James Gould that contacted me, I think everyone in the family must have been told they descended from the Black Douglas (hair colouring) opposed to the Red Douglas (hair colouring) I think that James the Black Douglas was just a more romantic ancestor technically we all descend from one ancestor a William anyway. I daresay all the Douglas's in Cumberland are cousins I know we had relatives in Longtown as we visited them in 1949 and 1957 but how they fit into the family I can only guess. I do know that our relatives around the Carlisle area had fair hair and blue eyes. How even genetics pass on from mother's too.

Hello there Helen, one of my direct ancesters was Johnathan Douglas born in 1758 and married to a Margaret Wright in 1781 I descend from their son James born in 1784 one of his brothers was a John Douglas born 1797 this brother married a Isabell Bell their children were Ann 1831, Sarah and George 1834, Isabell 1837, Jane 1841 and Elizabeth 1849.
All this family lived at Bolton not far from Carlisle in Cumberland for about 400 years I know we had relatives at Caldbeck and also at Abbytown and Wigtown where I was told the Douglas's origionated from a long time ago.

named Mary (or Ann, depending on the Census! Maybe Mary
Ann?), born about 1820 in Southerfield (yet to find her last name).
She married an unknown Bell and had these children (that I know
of thus far)

Jane Bell, born Blencop?, Cumberland about 1852
Benjamin Bell, born Longrigg about 1854
Mary Bell, born Kelsick, about 1861

I've yet to find their birth registrations so I don't have any certs to
look for their father's name.

I originally come from BiF and have Macmillan ancestors. I would be interested to see if we have any links.

My gggrandmother was Mary Ann Macmillan b 1843 Antrim. Married William Tyson 1863 at the Parish Church Barrow in Furness.
Her parents were William and Sarah Jane nee Quinn both born in Ireland. His occupation was Tailor on MAry JAnes wedding cer..I have the names of 5 other siblings and have found them in the census of 1861 living at High Bentham. I think they moved over fron Ireland in the 1850's.

I just wondered if you have any more information on Ada Maria Cork married to James Carr in 1895. The bit about her family connections with tea plantations in Singapore sounds interesting. I think Ada Maria comes into the family tree I am working on although not on a direct line but my husband is possibly directly linked through her brother George Percy Cork. thank you for your reply, William was my ggrandfather, his son Thomas Starkie b 1886 Cockermouth was my grandather, his daughter Elizabeth Ann Starkie b Workington was my mother.
There was quite an age difference between William and Elizabeth Ann, and also he cannot be found on the 1861 and 1871 census

She was tried for manslaughter and found not guilty at Cumberland County assizes - interesting!

Hogg Family Cleator

Hi - I am researching the Hoggs of Cleator, originally from Ireland.

James Hogg born circa 1831 in Ireland (father Hugh Hogg) married Ann Kirkpatrick (father James Kirkpatrick) on 21 June 1857.

They had the following children,all born in Cleator according to the census. Sarah (1858), Eleanor (1860, married Henry Stewart), James (1862), Mary Jane (1866, married Andrew Kerr), Ann (1868), John (1870) and Jane (1879).

I have been unable to find this family in the 1861 census but have the 1871 and 1881. I think James may have had a brother Hugh Hogg. If anyone has any connection to or information regarding this family it would be great to hear from you.

I am the grandson of Joseph Shackley, however I am descended from his second wife, not from Amy Alice Ponsonby, who I believe is buried in Pittsburgh, PA. Joseph and Amy had four children (my dad's half-siblings) who all lived in the Pittsburgh area. I have pictures of the family from the early 1900s if you want to contact me. I believe the emigrated to the US in 1906.

My grandmother's family (Keenan) are related to your family. Felix Keenan & Sarah McQuoid had a son Felix 1836, uncle to your John James Keenan. Felix married Hannah Hallinan and their son,gr-grandfather James Keenan 1872 was the one that came to Australia. I am just starting to do our family trees. Not sure who was in England

My sister lives at Lytham St Annes, in Lancashire, so is the main one of us who goes up to the Carlisle Record office - she says she will check this out when she is next there.

I wonder who died - was she accused of helping her elderly husband pass on, or attacking a thief, or what. Can't wait1

Thanks for the reply re the Wannups - I haven't logged on for a couple of weeks, due to holiday. How interestign that you already have Wannups in your tree....but, there were a lot of them around in the area, so as you say, they could be from a different branch.

Will let you know if we find the detailed court record, but it could be a whil before she goes to Carlisle again.
