Tom, thats really interesting regarding the E referring to recusant families ( I had to look it up though LOL) as my mum said that her great grandad was Scottish and was disowned by his Orange Lodge family for marrying an Irish Catholic.
Now I haven't found any evidence of this but this could be a bit of a clue....
