Tom,
The British Census 1881 was taken end of March/begining of April, I don't know the exact date, and they contain the address, census area, individuals names within the family, age, whether married or not, occupation and where born and it is in 29 CD's. I have found it invaluable. You can orer it online for $25:50 American Dollars plus postage by going on:

www.lds.org

and then following on the left hand side -

Order Church Materials
Online Distribution Materials
Church Materials Catalog
Family History
Software Products
Census Vital Records
Then choose 'British Census 1881'

The 1901 Census for Lancashire is produced by a company over here in England and costs £49:95 plus postage.

I hope that this is of help. If you want me to check and see if your grandfather or great grandparents are on the 1881 Census just let me have their names, date of birth and where born if you know.

Take care,
Ivor

Hi Tom

Did any of your family emigrate to Canada in the early 1800's.

My gg grandfather Thomas Steele born 1799 died 1871, I believe his parents was James and Nicholina. There are still stills in the same area as they emigrated to.

Kathy

No.
My grandfather, Tom Steele, first came to Canada in 1905. He later returned to England to marry. He returned to Canada to earn the fare to bring his wife and child. My grandmother was booked to sail on the Titanic. Two days before sailing, he sent her a message that she should cancel her booking because he had lost all his money in a deal that went bad. She cancelled the booking and her steamer trunk was sent back to her home. She later sailed to Canada with the same trunk that had Titanic stickers on it. I have saved that trunk in my garage for years. A few years ago my wife scraped the Titanic stickers off the trunk because she wanted to paint it.

Hi all, I thought my family were from Scotland but they seem to originate from the Barrow/St. Bees Haille, Gosforth area with links to Ennerdale and unbelievably Workington ( I live there LOL)
My main link is Jeremiah/Gerard/Jared/Jarret Steel sometimes with and e sometimes without and even Steil.

Anybody have any links to me??

Julie xx

Tom, thats really interesting regarding the E referring to recusant families ( I had to look it up though LOL) as my mum said that her great grandad was Scottish and was disowned by his Orange Lodge family for marrying an Irish Catholic.
Now I haven't found any evidence of this but this could be a bit of a clue....
