I understand that the name is common in the area. The name is trade based. It was given to people who made steel. In Millom, during and after the middle ages, they made the best quality steel in all of northern Europe. The only other steel of similar quality was in Toledo Spain.

Spelling Steele with an "e" at the end, means that you are from a recusant family.

My grandddfather, Tom Steele, immigrated to Canada in 1910.

I am 2nd generation Canadian. In the 80's, when I was posted to England, I used to visit a great aunt who lived in the Millom area. She had many stories about my family. I still have some relatives who live there. She took us to this old farm where my family had lived for hundreds of years. It was strange to see where my roots were.

You live in a very beautiful place!

I am very interested about stories you said your relative told you. My grandparents are Steele's. Also I am a Senior(12th grade) and have a major family tree project for my English class. So I would to know any stories you have about the Steele's.

Tom, my grandfather, Isaac Steele, came from Corney, Cumberland, England, and his family lived in that place (a scatering of farms as a whole) since before th 1790's - at that time their surname was spelt with and without the 'e' at the end, changing on the birth, marriage and burial records for the same person.

Have you come across any Steele's for this area?

Thanks,
Ivor Steele Holden

No, I have not run into anything on the Corney Steeles. Corney is not far from where my grandfather is from, Millom.
Their farm is not far from St. Anne's Thwaite and Lady Hall.
When the last Steele owner died, the farm went into the hands of a family called Isaacs.
They could be related since there is not much distance between the families. Also, since the name is a trade name, they might have known each other through the manufacture of steel.
Do you know why they changed the spelling of their name? Was the change to drop the last "E"? It could have reflected a move away from the Catholic church. If they added the last "e" they may have returned to the Catholic church. Life was made difficult for Catholics in England back then. Do you live in the UK

Thanks for your email.
It looks from the church records that the 'e' was being added. I live in Norfolk on the east coast of England but my parents still live in north Lancashire, 5 miles north of Lancaster, and about 1 hours drive from Corney.

All the best,
Ivor

I live in Tsawwassen, a suburb of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada.
There are still some family in England. My grandfather came to Canada in 1905. In the following 15 years he brought over his parents and most of his brothers and sisters.
I was posted to England for a few years and was very impressed. I have many fond memories of life there.

If you want me to check any details for you let me know. I have a copy of the 1881 Census on CD Rom for all of the British Isles (produced by the LDS Church) and I have ordered the 1901 Census on CD Rom for Lancashire which I will receive early March.

What type of information does the census contain? 1881 was the year my grandfather was born. You will probably see him on the census. How do you order these CDs and what do they cost?
