Q4 is any month from October to December.

Edmunds birth was registered in Camberwell District in Q3 1853.
Such an easy name to trace.

It seems Geoff is right Barbara.
FreeBMD (look it up) records most of the civil registrations of BMDs in England from 1837 to currently about 1920 to 1930.
it shows that in Q$ 1884 in Camberwell (vol 1d page 1315) there was a marriage of Edmund Seyfang TAYLOR and of the two women on the page one was Bertha Edith LITTELL.

So your family do not appear to have anything to do with Cumberland which is way up north from Surrey and Kent.

I have the birth certificate of John Gate Hoggarth, my grandfather,born November 2, 1878,in Ireby, Low Village,Cumberland ,England. His mother, Mary Hoggarth, a domestic servant, has not listed the father. The registration district is Wigton, sub-district of Caldbeck. I cannot find a baptismal certificate. Perhaps the actual birth registration would help. This info is vital in order to fit the pieces together.
Mary is listed on the 1891 census, Rg12-4294 Folio 6, Orton,Cum. as single, grocer,Cum, born in Ainstable. John, 12, is a scholar. We cannot find Mary on the 190l census.
Perhaps there are some cousins of Mary who could shed light on this missing info.I would welcome any other history from this family.

I'm looking for the Taylor, Littell, Nichols, Foster, Wright Gibbons families.
Edmund Seyfang Taylor m Bertha Littell, He died in 1908, and Bertha came to USA, by way of Canada, with the children.
One of her sons Cyrill Wright Taylor, m my uncle Ted's oldest sister Magdaleana Tuffli from ND. He died in 1996 she died age 106 in 2005

I think they were from Kent, Cumberwall, Surrey, areas

I have quite a lot of Kennedy & Armstrong of around that time from Bewcastle - some David's but none of those have have a c1811 birthdate.

How do you know he came from Bewcastle ?? Do you have any of his siblings info which might help in pinning hime down?

Hello everyone

On an 1891 census return, my great great grandad David Dalton (then living in Tanfield, Co. Durham) is listed as having been born in Cumberland, ChapelKnowe. Previously, he is said to have been born in 'Scotland'.

I know that there is a Chapelknowe just across the border in Dumfriesshire - can anyone give me any idea:

a) if there is/was actually a Chapelknowe in Cumberland, or
b) if the Chapelknowe in Dumfriesshire might have 'moved' if borders were altered during the 19th century?

David is proving pretty elusive. Any help would be appreciated.

Only the husband would be shown if married, no maiden name on death certificate.

The only promising Frances found so far is Frances Brown, baptized 25 Sept 1819 at Castle Sowerby, however the only Frances Brown marriage found is to John Wane, 28 Sept 1839, Bassenthwaite. The search for Thomas Todd's Frances continues.:)

1871 Census finds Thomas (1808) Todd and Frances living with their son Robert and his wife Hannah (Hulme) in Ormskirk, North Meols. In 1881 Thomas was back in St. Cuthbert, Carlisle, Frances presumably deceased.

Frances' maiden name is still a mystery.

My great-grandfather was the older brother of your grandfather Patrick. My g-grandfather was John William. In the 1901 Census John William was married and living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, having moved there after the lead mining industry all but dried up in Alston.

There is a birth for joseph Reed 1894 Wigton which is the registration for Bowness.
Cannot find in 1901 Ancestry but the 1901 census online has a Joseph age 7 born Bowness living Bowness.
There is no surname and i have no vouchers left to access it.

Annie Ethel Reed age 1 b. Bowness birth registered Wigton 1890

I was unable to find a marriage of Joseph Reed to Amy but i found an Amy Elizabeth Wood born 1864 Bowness to John and Amy.
There is a marriage of Joseph Reed to Elizabeth Wood in Wigton 1889.
Annie Ethel died in 1893 age 3 but so far I have been unable to find death of either an Amy or Elizabeth Reed before 1898.

Is this William Taylor the son of Joseph Taylor. They immigrated to Canada in 1832 via Tuscallosa, Alabama, where Joseph Sr. married Sara Maxwell. The Maxwell's were also from Cockermouth. Wm Taylor is my gggrandfather.

"Boxman" in your later post re 1861 census was presumably Bowman. Jane a house servant to Bowmans.

Elizabeth Todd c.27 Sept 1842, Houghton, father William Todd, mother Isabella (?).

Ann Todd b. 1838 Dalston, Thomas (1841)Todd's sister married a William Bowman, b 1826, Heskett, abt June 1863.

Robert Todd, Thomas (1841)Todd's brother, married a Hannah Hulme, b. Ormskirk, in Carlisle abt June 1863.

I have a recollection of my Mother saying her Father came from Bowness. However he was born in Silloth and was in the 1901 census after he married my grandmother in 1898!!!!It is possible he lived there with his first wife?

There are two census entries, 1871 (under Anderson) and 1881, he is now in Newcastle upon Tyne. I have his marriage certificate of 1867 marrying Harriet Sophia Blake and his father as Thomas (by now deceased). There are 1851 and 1861 census entries of a George Henderson b.1844 in Carlisle but I'm almost certain that's not him. He must have died in the 1880's as Harriet is shown as the head of the household on the 1891 and 1901 census'.

I'm finding it harder to find them on the 1871 census, I have now found Frances and Thomas, are you sure they survived.

I think that Eleanor married John Harrison, as follows, and Young is living with them, although he is described as a boarder.
