Hedleys in Cleator, Egremont, Whitehaven

Hedleys in Cleator, Egremont, Whitehaven
Andrew Hedley b1824/5 County Down Ireland was the brother of my gg grandfather who disappeared off the radar after he got married c1850, turned up in the 1881 census a blast engine man in Furnace Court, Cleator Moor.

From census 1861, 1871, 1881 I find that there were a lot more than just Andrew. (And from some C of E parish records online which I now can't find again)
It is not, as I thought, a couple of Irishmen finding work in England... there were a LOAD of Hedleys there at that period and what's more they were more or less all in the one street and all born in Ireland.
So a load of unrelated Irishmen called Hedley going to England looking for work don't just happen to all end up in the same street in England!

Andrew and his wife Eliza Jane Booman had a child Isabella baptised in James St Scotch Presbyterian Church in Whitehaven. I then find that Hedleys have been baptised here since 17c !!!!!
Other children were John, born Co Down, Henry born Whitehaven, twins Isabella and Eleanor, 1854, Cleator (Eleanor married John Shylan), James born 1859 in Cleator

Another brother who disappeared (no trace after marriage to Anna Frew) was Joseph. He would have been born about 1830/31.
There is , in the 1881 census an innkeeper called Joseph Hedley at 55, Henry St in Workington. His wife is Annie born Ireland 3 years later than him and living with them is daughter Margaret Larkin and grandson Joseph E Larkin.

Tradition has it that "our" Hedleys are from Northumberland but I now wonder if it wasn't just happen-chance that all those 19c County Down Hedleys ended up in that particular area... perhaps from Northumberland but by way of Cumberland for a hundred years? Also I've seen reference in records recently of addresses like Newcastle, Cumberland and Sunderland, Cumberland so obviously they were easily and often confused.

Any Hedleys from Cumberland after their Irish Roots?

thanks
peter
The marriage is in the IGI, it took place at Bewcastle 27 May 1848 (see IGI).

Bearing in mind that ages should have been rounded down, this looks more likely to me in 1841-

Stubb, Bailie, Bewcastle
Thomas MITCHINSON 50 Farmer
Mary 45
Elizabeth 15 Fem Serv
Joseph 30 AgLab
plus 2 more AgLabs.

Thomas and Mary were the names of the parents in the IGI Irthington baptism.

It's quite likely the absent father was called GATE, possibly John GATE. There were several of them around.

There's always a chance that the baptism register would name the father. It happened with some of mine.

The baptism certificate is unlikely to help you. It will probably say John Gates Hoggarth illegitimate son of Mary Hoggarth. The fact that no father is mentioned on the birth certificate means he was illegitimate.

I'm afraid the only sure way would be to get a copy of

Marriages Jun 1848
Lamb Robert
+
MITCHINSON Elizabeth
Longtown
25
109

which you prob already have the details of - a copy should show both their fathers names + their occupations, which helps pinpoint them earlier - this especially applies when this far back and you are then having to rely on church records for births, if they survive and, the 1841 census which is very basic and does not show relationships. Regretfully, she is not consistant in future census' as to the place of birth and, there are 5 possibles in the 1841 census

If I had to make a guesstimate:

1841
James 50
Elizabeth 20
John 15
Thomas 13
Mary 5
Ann 6 months
Civil parish: Newton
Hundred: Eskdale
County/Island: Cumberland
Registration district: Brampton
Sub-registration district: Brampton

sorry I can't be more specific

It seems Geoff is right Barbara.
FreeBMD (look it up) records most of the civil registrations of BMDs in England from 1837 to currently about 1920 to 1930.
it shows that in Q$ 1884 in Camberwell (vol 1d page 1315) there was a marriage of Edmund Seyfang TAYLOR and of the two women on the page one was Bertha Edith LITTELL.

So your family do not appear to have anything to do with Cumberland which is way up north from Surrey and Kent.

Bryan

I have the birth certificate of John Gate Hoggarth, my grandfather, born November 2, 1878,in Ireby, Low Village,Cumberland ,England. His mother, Mary Hoggarth, a domestic servant, has not listed the father. The registration district is Wigton, sub-district of Caldbeck. I cannot find a baptismal certificate. Perhaps the actual birth registration would help. This info is vital in order to fit the pieces together.
Mary is listed on the 1891 census, Rg12-4294 Folio 6, Orton,Cum. as single, grocer,Cum, born in Ainstable. John, 12, is a scholar. We cannot find Mary on the 190l census.
Perhaps there are some cousins of Mary who could shed light on this missing info.I would welcome any other history from this family.
Thanks, Isabel
Hello everyone

On an 1891 census return, my great great grandad David Dalton (then living in Tanfield, Co. Durham) is listed as having been born in Cumberland, ChapelKnowe. Previously, he is said to have been born in 'Scotland'.

I know that there is a Chapelknowe just across the border in Dumfriesshire - can anyone give me any idea:

a) if there is/was actually a Chapelknowe in Cumberland, or
b) if the Chapelknowe in Dumfriesshire might have 'moved' if borders were altered during the 19th century?

David is proving pretty elusive. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mick

1871 Census finds Thomas (1808) Todd and Frances living with their son Robert and his wife Hannah (Hulme) in Ormskirk, North Meols. In 1881 Thomas was back in St. Cuthbert, Carlisle, Frances presumably deceased.

Frances' maiden name is still a mystery.

My g-grandfather was John William. In the 1901 Census John William was married and living in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, having moved there after the lead mining industry all but dried up in Alston.

I do have some interesting bits of paperwork that you would probably like to see.
