Hi Greg,
My name is Katrina (Kate)
Jackson and I am also descended from William
Wheeldon and Sarah
Norton. Sarah
Norton came from Ireland (
Kings County now called Offaly). She came to
Sydney with her mother (Mary
Bentley). The
Bentley name has also been kept in our family with my uncle being named
Bentley Jackson (Ben). When I asked for a copy of Sarah's birth certificate seeing the name
Bentley as a surname made me smile as my uncle had always wanted to know why his first hame was actually
Bentley and his mother said it was a 'family name' but he never new the details and passed away before I had the informaton.
I am descended from
Ada Sarah
Wheeldon (your William's sister). Your William was the oldest child of Sarah and William
Wheeldon and his sister
Ada (my great grandmother) was about the 8th born. They also had younger sisters (Ruby and Amy) who my great aunt (Ada's daughter
Sadie Jackson) used to tell me about (her remembered her aunty Amy and Aunt Ruby). She would probably remember them fairly easily as they were the youngest of her aunts. I believe William was 30 years old when his father (William Snr) died and he came back to Deep
Creek from Queensland the year of his father's death. On his fathers death certificate it lists all the children -William as 30 at the time of father's death and his youngest sister Ruby as 2 years old. William senior was 56 when he died but Sarah lived to 78. Longevity seems to be in my female line as my great grandmother Ada's daughters (my great aunts - Sadie
Jackson, Minnie
Jackson, Eileen (Mabel)
Jackson and Grace
Jackson all lived to 95 and over. Sadie lived near us and in her own home till 98. Minnie lived to 100 (I attended that birthday party and Minnie's full name was Minnie Elvira
Norton Jackson - yay - the
Norton name gets a mention!), Grace and Eileen lived to 95. Unfortunately their younger brother (my grandfather Milton lived till only 65 so I only knew him till I was 6 years old. Ada Sarah
Wheeldon married my great grandfather Arthur
Jackson in Fredricktown and Arthur ran the milk factory in Smithtown (which was Nesles). The family moved to
Sydney around 1918 after the factory was taken over by
Baccus Marsh I believe. Your William was the first born and he was born here in
Sydney before the family moved up to Deep
Creek as was his sister Elizabeth. Sarah
Wheeldon (nee
Norton) was at the birth of her granddaugher - my great aunt
Sadie in Smithtown (she is listed on the birth certificate as being present when
Ada delivered
Sadie). Apparently Sarah did a lot of midwifery work around the district, having 12 children of her own and there not being a lot of doctors available in those times and in that remote area.
I have family who live in South West
Rocks so I have done a lot of research and visited the graves of Sarah and William in West Kempsey. They are buried with their son
Eardley Macleay Wheeldon (he died as a teenager after a riding accident - he was riding his horse to Clybucca.) My great aunt
Sadie told me that her mother
Ada gave her this information.
I have been doing a lot of research but am taking a little break for a while as sometimes it becomes a bit overwhelming but it gives me a great sense of pride in my family and what they achieved. Let me know if there is a question I may be able to help with. I am happy to share the
Wheeldon information I have.
Nice to catch up with more
Wheeldon descendants.
Cheers,
Kate.
