Debbie, I have an Elizabeth
Bickford in my family tree. According to the 1851 census, Poundwell St., Modbury,
Devon, she was born in Modbury, aged 39, married to John
Boon, inn keeper, and living with their children, Sarah Ann aged 19, John 13, William 11, Henry 9, Susan 7, Nicholas
Bickford 5, Walter 4,
Hubert 2, Elizabeth Ann 3 months and her mother-in-law Sarah
Boon. Another son, my gt gt grandfather George
Boon 16, was living in Kingsbridge as an apprentice shipwright. They also had two sons by the name of James. The first was christened in 1833, the second, James
Bickford Boon was christened in 1836. All of the above Boons were born in Modbury.
However, I think the mother, Elizabeth
Bickford may be the daughter of John
Bickford and Anne
Whiteway, and christened at Dartington on 29th July 1811, but cannot confirm this baptism is my Elizabeth, as I do not know her parents names, but this was the only possible baptism I could find , and of course the 1851 census could be incorrect regarding her place of birth.
The
Boon family obviously wanted to keep the
Bickford name going, as it crops up quite often as a middle name. [My gt grandfather's sister was Anne
Bickford Boon, born 21st March 1865, Kingsbridge].
When John
Boon, maltster, and Elizabeth
Bickford married on 8th April 1831 at Stoke
Damerel, one of the witnesses was a John
Bickford - maybe father or brother of Elizabeth?
I have the birth cert.of Nicholas
Bickford Boon, born 21st Feb 1846, Modbury. His father John's occupation is farmer.
Do you think our Bickfords are connected, and could my gt gt gt grandmother Elizabeth have been the sister of Reverend James
Bickford?
Would love to hear from any one who could confirm or deny this.
