Hi Claire,
My 3x grandfather was Thomas
Sussex. As Deborah
O'Brien indicated, he married Mary
Smale in 1841. I have also run into a roadblock trying to find his parents. For a while I believed Thomas
Sussex (born - 1784) that married a Jemima
Welch (born 1788) were his parents, but after further research, I now do not think they are.
FYI - Mary
Smale was born in 1817 or 1816, not 1814. The 1881 census shows Mary (
Smale)
Sussex as 64 years old, but it is easy to mistake the the 4 in 64 as a 7 (hence the error in the census data indicating she was born in 1814 instead of 1817).
Interestingly, the Joseph
Sussex (Thomas and Mary's son) that you referenced as being born in 1858, is my 2x Grandfather's younger brother. My 2x grandfather (also Thomas
Sussex) was born in 1847. He in turn had an illigetimate son who was born in 1868 (my Great Grandfather- again named Thomas
Sussex) who was raised by my 3x grandfather.
As a result of this, my Great Grandfather was raised with Joseph
Sussex (his uncle) by Thomas and Mary (my 3x Grandparents).
Joseph and my Great Grandfather married sisters, Mary Jane and
Hannah Kelly respectively.
The reason I bring this up is because I presume you may be a decendent of Joseph
Sussex having referenced him. If this is accurate, we would be 3rd or 4rth cousins (all conjecture of course).
E-mail me with any comments.
Andy
