Thank you. My William Collier was born about 1829, prb. in NewFoundland. We cannot find his birth record. He was married to a Adelaide Bennett, which you will see on several other family trees on Ancestry. When was your Jasper born? These families seem to carry down the names from generation to generation; and I am looking for a connection.

Our Jasper was born 1807 in Plymstock, Devon, England. He maried Jane Cobbledick and had 11 children.
He and his family are listed in the UK 1841 to 1881 census records. He died before the 1891 census.
I agree that the names were often passed down (or across) so if you find a link, do let me know.
Regards. Robin

Sydney (or Sidney) George Tucker of Newton Abbot b.1882

I am a direct descendent of Sydney George Tucker born in Devon in 1882 or 1883. He married Beatrice Ellen Kendall in Newton Abbot, Devon in 1909 and had three children - William JP Tucker (b.1911), Nellie TB Tucker (b.1913) and Doris Irene Tucker (b.1915). The latter was my grandmother who, together with her mother Beatrice, emigrated to New Zealand seemingly leaving behind her father and siblings. Can anybody shed some light on what happened to Sydney Tucker and the children left behind in England?

Edward Passmore Newton married Loveday Ann Goldsworthy March 1925 in Sithney. They had at least one child: Loveday Ann G. Newton b. abt September 1934 Helston.

They appear to have had one other child, or perhaps two, who did not survive, based on Free BMD:

Birth - Leslie G. Newton, December 1929 Helston 5c 201, mother Goldsworthy

Death - Leslie G. Newton, June 1935 Helston 5c 189, age 0

This would suggest that there were two different Leslies or that there was a transcription error in the case of the 1935 death. If two different Leslies, perhaps the first died as a baby (no death found) and the second at birth or shortly after? I'm assuming that parents in either case were Edward Passmore Newton and Loveday Ann Goldsworthy.

Any comments appreciated!
Most likely burial would have been at the Higher Cemetery Sentry Corner on the west side of the town. The resident caretaker 'Fergie' is very helpful, also the Council offices who have the registers of burials. As you have the year of burial they should be able to confirm quite quickly if this man is indeed buried there. Torridge District Council, Riverside, Bideford. Tel: 01237 428700 - or www.torridge.gov.uk Good luck.

While Barnstaple Library does have records for Old Town and East the Water, so does the archive section of Northam Council in Windmill Lane Northam.
But a great many graves in East the Water have no marker or names so remain a mystery & to make things more difficult still I was advised by archivist for St Mary's Bideford that many graves had other unrelated persons buried in them if the allocated space was not used before licence ran out.

Old town cemetery is now a recreational area being out of use for over 100 years some gravestones are placed around the walls but likely of finding a ancestor has to be very low indeed

Hi Neil,

I guess there will be a once removed in that relationship :-)

I can confirm that my descent is from the John and Grace marriage. My mother has a story from her father (Edwin) about a man turning up at the Mill with a bundle of papers tied up with ribbon. We understand that these were the necessary papers for John & family to emigrate. We understand that a farm was already available for him to stock. We can only surmise why he did not go.

From the data I have, Richard b1830 did not sail with the rest of the family. Do you know when he sailed?

Hope your trip up country will be successful,

James
Hi Neil,

Just discovered this thread as I have not used Ancestry for my research.

I am descended from John Johns' second family. Did you get a peep at the photo?

Talking of photos, our family has no photos of 19th century Johns' families and I'm keen to track some down.

Given William & Peggy's emigration I feel sure they must have had photos taken to send back to the family at Ash Mill. Are you aware of any photos of Aussie kin?

Which of William and Peggy's children are you descended from?

Regards,

James

No, you're not thick; I didn't explain well.
An OPC is an Online Parish Clerk -- a volunteer who collects/transcribes parish records for a particular parish.
On that Devon OPC page, click on North Molton and South Molton; that should take you to pages that tell you how to contact the OPCs.

I checked FreeBMD and didn't find anything for John, but Free BMD is a volunteer effort and isn't 100% complete.

Great, great grandfather was William Collier, born 1829 in Newfoundland, married to Adelaide Bennett, born 1831. Father we believe, of William was Jasper, but I do not know if he was born in England. I cannot find birth info on William, or Jasper.

Thank you.

Pam, your an absolute star. Thank you so much. I would never have found that out. As i mentioned in my post i have proved useless in finding out any information so this really is appreciated. Hopefully this will help me go back even further. I'll get ordering those marriage certificates. Thanks again for your time. Best Wishes Elanna
