Down Family

Hello;

I am looking for information as it relates to the Down family from Devonshire. Right now, I have a Thomas Down b. in approx 1796 from Braddon Clovelly, Devonshire. He married an Ann Tasker as early as 1815. She was from Eggsford, Devonshire. I know they moved to Egloskerry, Cornwall by 1829. Five known children: Elizabeth b. abt 1816, Henry b. 1818, James b. 27 Sept 1829, Emaline b. abt 1833, Ann b. 16 Nov 1834. James onwards were definately b. in Egloskerry. Thomas and Ann with at least James & Henry immigrated to Canada in approx 1851.

If anyone can help me with who Thomas' parents might have been or the decendants of any of the children outside of Henry/James it would be appreciated. As well, if anyone can comment on the prevelance of the 'Down' family name in Devonshrie that would be helpful also.

Bruce

I have checked the IGI records of the Mormon Church and see a christening listed for March 23, 1757 at Bickleigh, Near Exeter, Devon, England. There is a father listed, Charles Clapp. My guess is this is the correct family, but I would like more proof. I will check some more into the baptism records. Do you have any information on a Charles Clapp who would have been born abt. 1730?

I really appreciate your help. Since I am not familiar with the Church of England's clergy and all the early English records it is hard to know where to start looking. I live in the U.S.A. so I'm not familiar with the place names either. I am slowly learning though -thanks to great help from people like you. If you have any other hints I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the websites . I will contact the schools and see if they can help me out. The information I obtained from the Church of England said Rev. John Squarey Clapp was born in 1757. I'm sure this was my John because I have a book written by the church in Long Benton that mentions his family and that my great great grandfather, John Charles Clapp, was born in Long Benton on May 31, 1795. He also became a rector at the church in Coulstone, Wiltshire 1824-1858. He is buried in that churchyard. So I hope to find out some information on his father, John Squarey Clapp now. Thank you so much for your help.

Caroline
I am sure that you will receive many replies form engineers but here are a few questions you will need to be able to answer:
1. What sort of Engineer was he? Mining, civil, railway, canal etc etc Any clues on profesion will help, such as from Census records or birth/marriage certificates.
2. In the mid 1800s, many engineers used their experience to develop their skills, rather than being specifically trained. Again, an idea of his field of work will be useful.
3. Some professions, such as civil engineers, will have worked and trained towards obtaining membership of a professional body. For example, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) was founded in 1818.
4. Lastly, bear in mind that if he was a professional engineeer, it is likeley that he travelled to wherever the work was and this was probably different to where he trained.
All a bit vague until you know wheat he did as a profession but when you do, various institutions have good archives (again, e.g. the ICE).
Good luck
Robin
(a Civil Engineer)

I have just found time to get back to some family history.

A couple of corrections to information supplied -

Rev. James Bickford (no Arscott) in his name married Fanny Tapp - here is the link to his autobiography

http://www.archive.org/details/jamesbickfordaut00bick

Nicholas Moysey Bickford was Rev James' brother.

The James Arscott Bickford you mentioned was in fact the son of Nicholas Moysey Bickford (my great great grandfather) who was born 20 Dec 1855 in Gardiners Victoria - died 1939 in Newtown NSW - married 1879 to Annie Johnson who died 19 Jun 1940 in Strathfield NSW.

The Moysey in Nicholas' name was a family name from - Rebecca Alice Bickford, daughter of John Bickford & Elizabeth Gill & brother of Nicholas' father John - marrying Robert Phillips Moysey who had 5 sons & 1 daughter - Robert Phillips Moysey, Nicholas Moysey, John Bickford Moysey, James Bickford Moysey, Thomas Moysey & Rebecca Moysey.

Nicholas Moysey Bickford emigrated to Oz in 1844 on "Sea Queen" along with his cousin James Bickford Moysey & Susanah Moysey.

Will continue reading through the infomartion you provided & check against my records.

Hi

I've just been going through some of my stuff and find that William Edward Reiffenstein, son of Christian Edward and therefore brother of Gwendoline, married Alicia Jane Tillet in 1889. They had a daughter called Amye Ursula in 1898. My notes say that she too later became known as Steer. I don't know where I go this information (bad form I know but there we are.) It seems as if both Gwendoline and Amye ended up as Steer.

Catherine

I am trying to determine the relationship and family line of John Sapcote and William Sapcote. I see in many many family trees that John Sapcote is the father of William Sapcote; however most trees indicate that John was born in 1439 and William was born in 1429 (son born before father). Further, most trees show William's mother and John's spouse as Elizabeth Dinham, daughter to John Dinham and Joan Archer. However Elizabeth is shown to be born in 1449.

William, I believe correctly, is shown to be married to Anne Semark or Semarc (b. 1433). William and Anne had a son Guy born in 1459.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance that you can provide in this regard. If you need additional information, please feel free to request it.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Toby

Born 1769 perhaps in Broadhempston, Devon, although this info states he was a "native" of Broadhempston before moving to Newfoundland, Canada. He was married to Maria but I don't know if that was in England or Canada. They lived in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. I have lots of info. of their descendants. Looking for inf on William's beginnings (parents, siblings, etc).
Thanks
Catharine

Re: Quantick ancestors

As a new person to Ancestry.com, I have been perusing the message boards researching my family history.

I believe that the son listed here, Samuel Quantick, is my great grandfather, Samual Baker Quantick. The birth year is the same as is the birth place in South Molton. Samuel Baker Quantick had 12 children, 5 born in London and the rest in Chicago. He married a Maria Sullivan in 1864. Their youngest child Samuel (born in 1886) was my grandfather (mother's father).

I am wondering if you have discovered any information concerning William and Ann Quantick and their ancestors?

Thanks for any info!

Bruce Ballantine
