He might have emigrated to Huntington as an indentured servant.

Can anyone corroborate my suspicions? Is there any info on Henry's dad, Thomas Soper, who married Elizabeth Cooke? Was Thomas' dad also named Thomas and married to Joan Avery?

Sarah may have been born to Erasmus James and Grace about 1790.

Could sks tell me what they think is the place name for the birthplace of Rebecca Bennett on the 1851 census in Cumnor, Berkshire. She is aged 62 then. I know her maiden name was Hooper.
Ancestry has the county as Warwickshire, but I think it's Devon as the enumerator writes the d of Daur in the same way as the d of Devon.
However the placename itself has me baffled.
It looks like Oakham Roka ! I thought perhaps Okehampton, misheard and misspelt perhaps? Or could it be something else, which someone more familiar with Devon than myself might know?

I am looking for info on the Rew family who I believe are from North Devon. My great-great grandmother is Rebecca Rew who married Richard Hocking in 1879. Her father is Thomas Rew c1811, who was born in Landkey. The trail then goes cold. I would appreciate any help. Many thanks.

William MARGRAY/MARGRIE (c. 1770s-?), children born in Devon

Looking for an ancestor William MARGRAY who had a daughter Martha Millycent (1809 Topsham, Devon) and apparently another son William (1807 Topsham, Devon).

The family legend comes from our Martha:
"Martha's father (William) was a missionary in Africa where he and his family were massacred by the natives.
A neighbour, Mr Goldsmid, realised that one of the family was unaccounted for and after a search found the little girl, Martha, who had run off into the bush to escape.
He took her to his home where she lived for some time, until it was decided that she should be with her relatives in England.
When she grew up, Martha was so grateful to the old Jewish man, that she gave her daughter the name Goldsmid in his honour."

Would love to confirm anything about Martha's parents. We have a marriage between a William MARGRAY and a Millecent (Milley) MERRY in Dec 1795 in Crewkerne, Somerset, and dates of residence for Milley MARGRIE in the 1841 and 51 Census in Devon. But would like to confirm some more details and the missionary story.

Any ideas?

There is an LDS Ancestral file entry for this person, noting a christening in Axminster, no church given, on 3 Mar 1764.

The entry gives her parents as John Morgan and Elizabeth Perran.

I am very curious about this child. Is there anyone with access to the original entries who could look at it and tell me if there is any indication of how old Elizabeth was when she was baptized, and if there is any possibility that her mother's surname could be Perronnet, or something like it?

Thanks!

Santa T.

I am searching for children or grandchildren of Frank Farthing b.1898 probably in Plymouth, England of Francis William Farthing and Florence Ellen Channon b.1874 in Devon. Frank lived with his mother and maternal aunt, Ethel Channon, at 21 Boring St. in Plymouth, according to the 1901 census. His father, Francis, was stationed aboard "The Gleaner" in Gravesend, Kent, England during that census. It is difficult to trace anyone after 1901 as nothing as yet has been posted to the Civil Registration Index of 1837 - 1983 for this line of Farthings. It certainly would be exciting to find any living relatives of my grandfather's, (Oliver Reginald Perham Farthing), family still living in England or any information at all that would help carry out my curiosity as to what has happened to that particular Farthing lineage.

Isaac PADFIELD in Devon

I have found a reference to Isaac Padfield in the 1891 England census. He is near Brixham in Devon. The trouble is that he left his family in his native town of Blaina, Monmouthshire Wales. I know he returned there in 1894.
Can anybody think of a reason why he might have travelled to Devon? He was a coal miner and I can't imagine that this took him there. There is a family story that he visited the USA. His step brother emmigrated there at sometime. Were there any sailings from Plymouth to the US?
Thanks.

SANGER in Devon linked to SWANGER/SWAINGER in Somerset?

Am trying to link a Swanger family in Somerset to the Sanger families in Devon. Any help appreciated - Ive hit a wall with the Devon connection

John Sanger married Margaret Whitfield in 1630 in Wiveliscombe. Apart from the their sons birth, Peter (1634) the Sanger name doesnt appear in the area. The name changed to Swanger a short time later at the time of their daughters death (1642) and subsequent generations in turn also changed the name to Swainger

I believe John Sanger came from Devon (possibly South Molton or Bishops Nymptom) but cannot clearly link him to a Sanger family there.

Any help appreciated.

ZELLEY /ZELLY / SELLEY / SELLY of Devon

My Great x 3 grandmother was Elizabeth Zelly/Zelley. She was born in Tiverton around 1816. The date is taken from census records and the place of birth is confirmed by both census records and her husbands bid for naturalisation (papers held by the Sec of State). The maiden name was taken from the naturalisation records.

We know that by 1832 she was married to Dominique Boggione, an Italian musician and had her first child, a son John, and they were living in Exeter. By 1836 the family had moved to the St James area of Bristol and they were still there in 1843. From there the family moved to Southampton were they had a successful lodging house. They had a colourful life..

In 1851 a 10 yr old neice comes to live with them in Southampton - Charlotte SELLEY, born in Exeter. This is the only other clue I have to Elizabeth's background. Charlotte must be the daughter of Elizabeth's brother.

The census info for 1841 for Exeter has really only one likely entry -a Charlotte Zelley is listed (1yr old - b. 1840) along with a brother Benjamin (B. 1837). Their parents are John (b 1809) and Charlotte Zelley (b. 1807). They are listed as living in the St Olave district of Exeter with John's occupation given as 'lace maker'. Because this is the 1841 census the place of birth for John is not given other than it being in Devon. (Also listed as Selly in other documents).

By 1851 10-yr-old Charlotte Junior is living in Southampton and 14-yr-old Benjamin is in prison for the theft of mutton pies. Charlotte Senior seems to have been in prison too in 1850 for 6 months for the theft of 19 shillings of silver. Can't find John but I'm presuming he has died.

So it looks like John and Elizabeth were siblings. Tiverton is Elizabeth's place of birth and I think it's possible that John was born there too. John was born abt 1809. Elizabeth abt 1816.

Can anyone help me go back to their parents in Tiverton??

ps..
Could be a red herring but on the same page for the 1841 Exeter census there is also an Ann Zelly living in the lodging house next door age 21 (b. 1820). And Ann appears at Southampton in 1850 on the marriage lists... Any ideas?
I'm going to try and get her marriage cert so that should tell me her father's name..

ps2..
Wedding cert just arrived and the Boggiones are witnesses to Ann's wedding to a Henry Barnett. Ann and Elizabeth (Boggione) could be sisters?? Benjamin Zelly is listed as Ann's father and he was a 'wool comber'. Is Benjamin the father of Elizabeth, Ann and John???

Also just found Elizabeth's son, John, living with Ann Zelly in Exter on the 1841 census - missed because of poor transcription.

ALL HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Mnay thanks, Joy.
Henstridge Farm, Berrrynarbor: 1840 SKINNER, GEAR, STREET families

Can anyhone tell me if in the 1840's "Henstridge" was an individual farm, hamlet, etc in Berrynarbor? Also, I am wondering Henstridge, in whatever form, still exists. I am tracing the Francis Cothay Skinner family that farmed there 1840-50 and then on to the U.S. Francis is listed as farming with Ephram Street at Henstridge during that time period. Benjamin Gear farmed at Henstridge later on. Skinner and Gear families were related, Francis and Mrs. Gear(his aunt) were originally from Charles/High Bray/South Molton areas of Devon. Are there any known Gear family members still in the area? Thanks for whatever can be shared on the above!

James JEWELL, who was born circa 1820 in DEVON

Hello; I am searching for my great grandfather, JAMES JEWELL, who was born circa 1820 in DEVON. He came to Prince Edward Island, Canada in the early 1840's. We do not know his parents' names or his birthplace.
Last summer we found an old photo album. In it are several memorial cards.
The first is for ELLEN JEWELL, died 15-Aug-1885. D.G.Prince, Castle Street, was the undertaker.
Ellen appears in the 1881 census as the wife of William J. Jewell who was born in Wellington, Somerset.
The second memorial card was for LETITIA WALLIS, of 84 High Streeet, Whitechapel, died 13-Oct-1881 aged 82 years. Letitia appears in the 1881 census. Letitia was born in Bridgwater, Somerset. In her household is HANNAH JEWELL - 50 years old - who was born in Wellington, Somerset.
The third card is for FLORENCE IRWIN, died 27-Dec-1889, at age 20. Florence appears in the 1881 census as the 12 year old daughter of William and Seline Irwin of Hulme, County Lancashire.
One photo is labeled "Mary Ann Cleave". It was taken at the North Devon Photographic Company, Wellington, Somerset.
Does anyone have any of these people in their databases?

Thomas WESTLAKE of Crediton, Devon marriage to Mary YARDE

On our Big Family Chart we have this entry:

THOMAS WESTLAKE of Crediton = MARY YARDE, d. of George Yarde & Frances Isaac. They were the parents of:
MARY ANN Westlake (ch. 21/12/1748 = John Westlake on 21/3/1774 at Crediton)
ELIZABETH Westlake (ch. 21/12/1750 = George Gale Snelling (ch. 1/5/1749, d. 1820 ... my ancestors)
JOHN Westlake (ch. 25.10.1752 at Crediton).

I would like to be able to confirm the marriage between Thomas Westlake and Mary Yarde. I'm wondering if it's possible to find this information from their children's birth records if no marriage record can be found? And if so, how would I go about this?

Hope someone out there can help me.

Harcombe connection? UCLE or URCHECK, ROBINSON in Devon

My wife's grandfather was called David Robinson, although there is a family rumour that his father was an East European who came over with a circus and stayed on.

The father is also rumoured to have owned property in Devon.

On David's marriage certificate, his father's name is given as William Harcombe Robinson. Whilst this is almost certainly a fictitious name if he was from Eastern Europe, I am wondering of the rumour about property in Devon and the middle name of Harcombe are clues which are maybe connected in some way.

The father's real surname may have been Ucle or Urcheck.

Could anyone suggest where I might look to trace property holdings in Devon (Harcombe?) around the 1880 to 1920 period? ("Property" may be anything from a field to a house, I suppose).

Thanks

andy

Henry SNOW 1674 Torbay

I am a descendant of a Henry Snow who was born in Torbay, Devon in 1674 and emigrated from England between 1698-1702 to the Kittery area of the Maine province of Mass. He married a Sarah Nason betw 1702-1707 and had several children. From Henry to the present I have pretty well locked in. It is getting further back than Henry that is causing me trouble.

Does anyone know of any work done with Devon Snows that would link with Henry?

All the online searches I've done with the UK National Archives came up empty. Most Snow records I've found so far seem to be around the Barnstaple area or out of the county altogether (Middlesex, etc.)

I have reason to believe he was born in Torbay and not just there for the boarding as his death notice from 1771 states he was born there and he claimed to have served with William of Orange in 1688 when William landed there with the Dutch army on 5 Nov 1688. He was a weaver by trade in his new life in Kittery.

Thanks all for any leads. And if anyone wants the full line from Henry to the present, I will share gladly.

Cheers.

Annie Ida May White, b 21 Aug 1877, Hubbardston, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
9.	Royal Evander White, b. 30 Jul 1880, Hubbardston, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
I suspect there may have been a son, possibly named William George, born between 1861 and 1865, as that is the only deviation from a common naming pattern.

I have the marriage certificate of William George White and Ellen Bunclark. His age at marriage was 28 years, a bachelor, a miner, living at Bartholomew St, Exeter. His father was William George White, also a miner. Her age at marriage was 22, a spinster, living at The Island, Exeter, her father was John Bunclark, a carpenter. The marriage was solemnized in the Register Office in the District of
Exeter, County of Exeter on Eleventh July 1858.

1861 Census shows them in Cressbrook, Litton, Derbyshire.
William White, abt 1841, Ivey Bridge, Devon, England, head, railway labourer
Ellen White, abt 1837, Exeter, Devon, England, wife
Elizabeth White, abt 1860, Exeter, Devon, England, daughter
Mary J White, abt 1861, Ashford, Derbyshire, England, daughter.

Ellen's parents were John Bunclark, b. abt 1809, Torquay, Devon, d. abt 1884, Exeter, Devon and Elizabeth Dart, abt 1809, Winkleigh, Devon, d. abt 1858 Exeter, Devon.

Without the name of William's mother, I am unable to determine the correct William White in earlier
censuses.

Thank you helping me,

Jean White
Oklahoma, USA
BINING b. 1843, Newton Abbott

Hi all:
I am trying to find more information on Caroline Bining (b. 1843, Newton Abbott). She was my gggrandmother. I believe her mother was Sarah Ann Bining (b. abt 1827, Teighnmouth). More murky is SA Bining's parentage....perhaps Thomas Bining (b. 1799, Seaton) and Susan or Susannah Davis (b. 1799, Teighnmouth). If anyone has any information that might be helpful, I would very much appreciate it. jw@cartrefcomm.com
Jenifer
Colorado

There's a website now online containing research by Roy Thorning, on the four branches of Devon Thornings. The information goes back to 1700. Hope it's helpful.

On the National Archives website there's a John Thornyng mentioned, working as an Attorney between 1573 and 1585 - interesting!

I am a Hewings by marriage and have recently begun researching the family tree. My husband was the son of George Hewings (1918-1985) who married Dorothy Heard in 1937. They had 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls.
George Hewings was the son of william richard hewings and sarah jane jewell so this would make george the brother of clive reginald hewings mentioned on a previous message.william richards father was william henry who i think married twice. i would love to have any further info anyone can give me about any hewings

JAMES, GUBB, and NORMAN Families in Coombe Martin

I've managed to track down my Mark James in Coombe Martin records (with the help of a kind OPC), and it turns out his parents are a John James and Elizabeth Gubb. Elizabeth and her family are from Coombe Martin, and I've found a bunch of records and information, including other people who seem to have researched the Norman (Elizabeth's mother's) family, but I'm at a stand still with John James.

Elizabeth Gubb was born to John Gubb and Agness Norman 29 Sept 1760 in Coombe Martin, Devon. John Gubb was born about 1720, Agness Norman about 1725, both in Coombe Martin as well.

I don't know anything, however, about John James, besides the fact that he was married 9 Oct 1779 in Coombe Martin.
It might be safe to assume that John was born about the same time as Elizabeth (around 1779), but there's no way to know for sure without further references.

So if anyone knows more about this John James, or would like to compare notes and swap information on Elizabeth Gubb's family (I don't know much about the father's family yet, but I have a few names and dates on her mother's side), please let me know. Thanks.
