Stuckless and Dorset-Newfoundland connection

Stuckless is a relatively common name in Newfoundland, particularly in Notre Dame Bay and almost certainly originated in Dorset. The first record I have of the name in Nfld. is 1783 (from Poole), but I'm unable to find any record of the name in Dorset, past or present. It has been suggested that the name is a variation on Stuckley.??? I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

I can't comment on the likelihood of Stuckless being derived from Stuckley, but you might be interested to know that in the 1851 Census for Winterborne Came, Dorset, there is a William Stuckley listed, age 16, born Jersey. (I am investigating him as he is a candidate for my ancestor, William Richard Stuckey, born 1835-1838, who emigrated to New Zealand in the late 1850s.)
