Your Mary (b. 1834) also had a sister Elizabeth/Bessie (b.1847 in North Wootton, Dorset, England). Bessie married George Stacey in 1872 in Sherborne, Dorset. They emigrated to Australia in 1883/4 on the "Scottish Hero" with their 3 surviving children Mary Effield, Hillary Hugh Bourne, and Horace Trevelyan. Soon after arrival both Horace and his mother Bessie, died. Many of Effie's and Hillie's descendants live in Australia.
I'm wondering if there is any connection with the Richard Lodwick Hillary of Sherborne OR with Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander and mountaineer.
What do you know of Elizabeth Hillary nee Hamblin? (the mother)? When and where did she and George die in Canada?
Did Gerard marry Elizabeth Thompson in Ontario? When?
I believe Frederick Hillary, Mary's brother, (b. 1836/7 in North Wootton, Dorset)was living in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in England in 1861. Did he later emigrate to Canada, too?

I am researching the Hillary line for a friend, who is connected through Richard, the son of Lodwick Hillary and Francis Read/ Hughes. Their son Frederick married Anna Mullett. Their son Montague emigrated to Western Australian. His brother Bertrand went to Canada and married. Their brother Frederick also went to Canada.

I'm wondering if there is any connection with the Richard Lodwick Hillary of Sherborne OR with Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander and mountaineer.

I have not confirmed through official documentation, and the data collected is through census English, Canadian and Australian and online data freebdm to compile early names etc.
The connection with Lodwick is the 1861 census when Lodwick is staying with Richard and family. He was also a witness when Richard married.

As for George, I don't know for certain if Lodwick was his father but there aren't that many Hillary in Sherborne/Sherbourne Dorset. I would think that there is a connection going on given names of the childen and would think that he is 99% Lodwicks son.

I don't know about Sir Edmund Hillary, but would think that it would be easy to find out his genealogy.

-------

What do you know of Elizabeth Hillary nee Hamblin? (the mother)?

in 1841census George and Elizabeth are living with
Mary Hamblin abt 1773 Dorset, England North Wootton Dorset 79 Ag Lab
Stephen Hamblin abt 1762 Dorset, England North Wootton Dorset 68
There is 99% possibility they are Elizabeths parents.

When and where did she and George die in Canada?
I can not find their deaths in Canada, in the 1891 census Elizabeth is a widow.

Did Gerard marry Elizabeth Thompson in Ontario? When?
Name Estimated Birth Year Marriage Date Spouse Name Marriage Location
Gerard George Hillary married 18 Nov 1880 Elizabeth Thompson occupation Farmer

I believe Frederick Hillary, Mary's brother, (b. 1836/7 in North Wootton, Dorset)was living in Salisbury, Wiltshire, in England in 1861.
Did he later emigrate to Canada, too?
I haven't found anything on him and his wife after 1861 census and will see what I can find.

Hope this is of some help
Cheers

I have found Frederick George Hillary and wife Mary Ann 1871 census still in Wiltshire. Mary Ann in 1881 is residing in Yeovil Somerset and recorded as a lodger. She is not with Frederick George, but recorded as married.

Hi,
I'm researching, primarily, the Woodland family in Somerset but have researched some Hillary history since John Woodland (b1844) married Mary Anna Hillary (b1843) in Bedminster(1870). They had three children - Frederick John (1871-1873), George Trevelyn (1873-1873)and my g-grandfather Frederick George Trevelyan (1875-1955) before emmigrating to Canada in 1879.

Mary's father George died 2 Apr 1887 in Peel Co.,ON. Her mother Elizabeth Hamlen(Hamlyn,Hamblin)died 19 Sep 1895 in Peel Co., ON. Elizabeth's parents were Stephen Hamlen and Mary Trevillian. They were married in 1807.

I have yet to find Frederick G Hillary (b1836)anywhere after 1871 (in Wiltshire).

I have no certain knowledge of the siblings or ancestry of George Hillary (b1812) but would love to know.(I suspect that there is much Hillary info. in the early parish records of Nether Compton, Dorset.)

Louisa Ann Hillary (b. 18 Jul 1840) married Edmund T. Diment (b. 10 Oct 1836) in Oct 1863 (Sherborne, Dorset).
They emmigrated to Canada with their 3 daughters in 1874 or 1875.Louisa died 4 Nov 1911. Edmund died 31 Oct 1910. Both are buried in Streetsville Cemetery, (former)Toronto Twp., (former) Peel Co., ON.

I have 8 children for George and Elizabeth Hillary: Gerard George(1834-1917), Frederick G.(1836- ), Samuel(1839-bef.1841), Louisa Ann(1840-1911), Mary Anna(1843-1929), Elizabeth Mary(1846-1885), George(1849-1854)and George Trevelyn(1854-1875).

Gerard George emmigrated to Canada in 1868 according to the 1901 Canada Census (Toronto Twp.,Peel Co., ON). There is a marriage of a "Gerald George Hillary",farmer, age 35, b.ENG,son of George&Elizabeth to Elizabeth Thompson, age 19,b.Halton Co.,Michigan,USA, daughter of Morris&Phebe at Hamilton, Wentworth Co., ON on 18 Nov 1880. This may not be Gerard George since he would have been about 45 in 1880, and, in 1901 when he was living with his sister Louisa and her husband, he was listed as "s"-single. A "George Gerald Hillary" (b.abt1835) Sherborne,ENG died in Halton Co., ON on 3 May 1917.

I hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to post data.

I don't know if George was the son of Lodwick Hillary and Francis Hughes but very good possibility.
This could be one of Gerorge's children

For Gerard to be the age he was when he married is not unusual, nor is it that he was much older than his wife,.

On his death registration details he is noted as being a widower.

Hello Mary
Just letting you know about the following FREEBMD entries:
Births Sep 1850 Hillary Frances Sherborne 8 94 - this is the birth of Frances Hillary, 6th child of Susan and Richard Hillary. She can be traced up to the 1871 Census but 'disappears' after that.
Death Mar 1850 Hillary Frances Sherborne 8 85 - this is the death of Frances READ - wife of Lodwick Hillary.
If you'd like more info on the details on these certificates let me know.

Paul,
Thankyou indeed for your info posted in June '09. I'm sure we are connected. I have a photo of a Hillary-connected family in Canada which I feel is your family. If I had an address for you I could try sending it to you.
My ancestor married Bessie/Elizabeth Hillary of north Wootton, Dorset in 1872.
You have the answer to the riddle of the Trevelyan given name for children of many generations - the maiden name of Elizabeth's mother, Trevilion.
Please continue contact.
Cheers,
Margaret (Australia)
