Hi

I am new to this - havent started tracing yet, I am just interested in the Brewer ancestry side of my family. Eliza Jane and Agnes Emma were married to Brewer's - Eliza was married to Henry Charles and Agnes was married to his son Frances Lott and they were my Great grandfather and Grandfather. I cannot believe that in a little place like Cranborne there were two seperate familys with the same surname.I believe that Henry Charles was born around 1861 but not sure.

Interested in anything you have on the Brewer family from Cranborne. My great Grand parents were Henry Charles and Eliza Jane Brewer buried at Cranborne in 1908. He was I believe the estate carpenter for the Manor.

My grandparents Frances Lott and Agnes Emma Brewer also lived in Cranborne, buried in the churchyard. They ran the coal merchants in the square until after the war.

I am not researching the family, but there is a lot of information on them. The 1841 census, appears to show that there were a number of children. This census does not actually show the relationship between the people, but you can take a very good guess,

1841 census transcription details for: Iwerne, Iwerne Minster

RG number: HO107 Piece: 290 Book/Folio: 12/11 Page: 17

Reg.
Dear Geraldine,

Holford is the name of the house. Most large houses in Bournemouth at that time had names not numbers.
Middle Road, West Cliff was renamed Robert Louis Stevenson Avenue (because he had lived near here, in a house he named Skerryvore, between 1885 and 1887).

The nearest church school would have been St. Michael's, West Cliff Road, built in 1878 and is still there, although massively altered, however there were several private schools in Bournemouth also.

St Peter's is the Parish church for central Bournemouth, but as Bournemouth grew satellite churches were built and St Michael's Church was dedicated in 1874.

Vanessa
Dorset

Thank you Lynne for your reply. I had come across the birth of Harry Clench's sisters in Sydney and I must say the situation keeps getting "curiouser and curiouser"
My original post on this Board was a bit of a fishing trip. I was hoping to find a descendant of Harry Clench's who might have some info on what sort of man he was and may have some family stories. As it is I will take this oppurtunity to appeal to Dorset researchers who have much more knowledge of Dorset genealogy than I do and ask for advice as to whether I should continue this line of research or not. It is a very long story and if you drop dead with boredom I will fully understand!
In 1909, Harry Eustace Clench contacted the descendants of Thomas and Janet Rose in Australia claiming that he had discovered a fortune sitting in Chancery that they had a rightful claim to. Thomas and Janet Rose were from Blandford Dorset, and immigrated to Australia aboard the Bellona in 1793, making them amongst the first group of free settlers to come here. Harry Clench claimed that if the Aussie Rose descendants gave him money to "further his research" then they could claim the money in Chancery. Harry Clench callëd the Aussie Rose descendants his "cousins"
This whole scheme became known as the "Rose Millions" and received a lot of publicity in the Australian newspapers at the time. What is interesting is that other Rose families, completely unrelated to Thomas and Janet Rose, became involved.Including my husbands family. His greatgrandmother even sent Harry Clench the family bible! We can't say for sure how much money Harry Clench got away with, but we know of several hundred pounds.
Of course this is considered to be a scam and Harry Clench a con man. And given that my husbands family for one were all as poor as church mice a very cruel scam. I was quite happy to put the whole "Rose Millions" saga to bed and continue on with trying to discover the identity of my husbands forebear Robert Reginald Richmond Rose, a task that had defeated generations of my husbands family who have hired professional researchers, combed the archives of Jersey, where Robert RR Rose's children were born, consulted Somerset House etc, all to no avail. Robert RR remains a mystery man.
THEN I was contacted by a lady whose family was also involved with Harry Clench and the "Rose Million" She told me that her grandfather had travelled to England at his own expense in the 1920's to investigate Harry Clench's claim. He returned home firmly convinced that Harry Clench's claims were spot on and there WAS Rose money in Chancery, but it had nothing to do with their Rose family ( her family is not related in any way to our Rose family)
We decided to investigate, for the first time that I know of, the identity of the "con man" Harry Clench. We were suprised to discover that he was exactly what he claimed to be. An accountant who lived at Worsley Road Leytonshire Essex. We were even more suprised to find that the Dorset FHS was amongst it's archives "The Rose Family- the Clench Papers". Harry Clench also wrote some articles for the Dorset Year books on Thomas and Janet Rose and their life in Australia.
I don't know much about con men, but using your real name and address then writing articles about the family you had just conned out of several hundred pounds seems rather strange.
The worst part for me in all of this is the estates that Harry Clench claimed the Aussie Roses had a claim on. They originated with Thomas Rose of Wootton Fitzpaine ( no relation to Thomas Rose from Blandford). This Rose family originated in Jersey ( our Robert RR Rose married and had children in Jersey ) This Thomas Rose's brother was William Rose an Army officer who became Governor of Jamaica and whose family stayed in Jamaica for several generations ( after 5 years of research I think there is a very good chance that our Robert RR Rose orginally came from Jamaica)The descendants of Thomas Rose of Wootton Fitzpaine married into the Parker family, a family chock full of Admirals ( we know for a fact that our Robert RR MUST have had an influential sponsor for his Naval career) In other words I could very easily make a case that our mystery man came from this family.
If anyone has mananged to plough through all of this I will be amazed! Should I investigate Harry Clench's claims more closely? My head tells me he was a con man and to forget it, my gut instinct is that this COULD be the breakthrough we have been waiting for re our mysterious Robert Reginald Richmond Rose.

Anne

Sorry, there is no Holland connection that I can see and I now see that I should have started a whole new thread for this one.
Does your Charles Mark Clench have any connection to the Rose families of Blanford or Wooton Fitzpaine?
The explanation as to why I want to know is very long and very complicated!

All I have is Charles Mark Clench 1836 Lytchett Matravers marrying into the Holland tribe. This puts him close in time & space to your Henry C Clench 1843 Wareham. The name is not common so I suspect a connection, but I am not aware of it.

Am I missing something? Do you suspect a Holland connection? If so I would be keen to investigate further.

I'm researching the family of Harry Eustace Clench born 1871 Braintree Essex. His father was Henry C Clench born 1843 in Wareham. Henry C's father was William Clench born 1793 in Blandford Dorset.
In the 1861 census Henry C is living with his Uncle Augustus and Aunt Mary Jane Clench in Braintree Essex.
Henry C Clench travelled to Australia and apparently married here. According to the 1891 census his eldest child Ida was born in Sydney in 1864.
If anyone recognises any of these people I would love to hear from you.

Dear Liz,

Galton isn't a village, but a tiny hamlet nr Owermoigne in Dorset. All that is there is the farm which is now a garden centre. It is nearly 15 miles from Hamworthy.

Are you thinking of Holton Heath / Holton Lee (often known just as Holton) which is a small railway halt about 1.5 miles from Hamworthy?

Regards

Vanessa
Dorset

I read with interest your post, I am researching my ancestry and looking for information about Richard Galton b 1710, who was my paternal ggggg grandfather, I believe although I know the family from later connections to Fovant in Wilts. that Richard may have been born in Hamworthy, and whilst researching this have come across the village not far away called Galton, there must be some connection????
Also I am interested as I am realted through marrage on my mums side to Charles Darwin/Wedgewood/, and Francis Galton through my relation Catherine Chatfield, this seems uncanny!!! Would be REALLY interested to learn more about Richard Galton or chat about othere links, I have a massive spreadsheet available showing the Chatfield family of Uttoxeter.

Many thanks

Liz

Hi,

I have just come across your piece while searching for information about my ancestor. He was Henry Smith (c1792)born in Marshwood Dorset. I have struggled for many weeks to find out who his parents were although I know he married his cousin Sarah Smith and would therefore have an uncle William Smith (c1769. The family lived in and around the area between Marshwood Burton Bradstock and Misterton in Somerset before my great Grandfather moved to Norfolk. Do you have any information on these Smiths which might be helpful?

Many thanks, Sue

Dear Nick,

I suggest you obtain a copy of Abraham TRIVETT (sic) and Hannah TUCKER's marriage certificate in order to confirm who their fathers were.

Marriage registered Dec 1/4 1844 Yeovil District GRO Ref: 10 - 815.

Certificates are available from The General Register Office (GRO) - see www.gro.gov.uk

Abraham is on the 1841 Census in Litton Cheney, however unfortunately he is not with his parents but is listed as a male servant to a Dairyman - John Hurford:

Name: Abraham TREVETT
Age: 15 (remember ages are rounded to nearest 5 years on this census)
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1826
Gender: Male
Where born: Dorset, England

Civil parish: Litton Cheney
Hundred: Uggscombe
County/Island: Dorset
Country: England

Street Address: Litton Cheney

Occupation: Male Servant

Registration district: Bridport
Sub-registration district: Burton Bradstock

Household Members:
Name Age
Abraham TREVETT 15

Info - Ancestry.co.uk.

As there are several people on the census who might be Abraham's parents (Francis & Ann, William & Sarah or John & Mary), I wouldn't assume anything, no matter how likely it may seem.
You must check original records to confirm (or deny) any probabilities.

I see his death was registered Jun 1/4 1903 Westbury District Wilts GRO Ref: 5a - 78. (Aged 80)

This would mean he was born abt 1823/24, which tallies with other census listings.

I take it that Abraham's baptism wasn't confirmed by Valerie Pettifer the OPC for Litton Cheney, so searching the records of nearby parishes may bring it to light and therefore confirm his parentage.

Vanessa
Dorset

Nick,

If you haven't found a baptism of your Thomas TREVETT (c 1750) in the obvious place of Litton Cheney, then you might consider the one that appears on the BVRI for a Thomas TREVET baptised at Compton Vallence on 18 Nov 1744, father John TREVET. That's only 3 miles from Litton.

Duncan, Dundee

Hi Vanessa and Eric, I too am researching my Trevett / Trivet connections in Dorset. Here is part of an earlier posting.

My GGG Grandfather Abraham TRIVETT (abt 1820 - 1903) married Hannah TUCKER (abt 1825 - 1895) in Sep 1/4 1884 in Yeovil, Somerset, and was born and baptized in Litton Cheney, so it's from him backwards that I'm researching.
I think his parents were Francis TREVET (abt 1777) and Ann MAYERS (abt 1786) married in Litton Cheney in 1807. At this point I need help since there seem to be so many TREVETT's around the Litton Cheney area at this time.

The Dorset OPC, Valerie Pettifer, responded with some possible names. I have downloaded Brian Trevette's document with suggests Francis Trevet's parents were Thomas Trevet, abt 1750, and Mary Trevet abt 1750. Can either of you help with these names, also I cannot find a baptism for Thomas !

Any help or communication with other TREVETT researchers would be appreciated.

Regards

Nick

Have read your Marshalsea with interest. I have Ruth Marshalsea b1806 in Whitelackington Somerset who married William Harvey b1801 Whitelackinton Somerset. they married 15 January 1826 in St Mary's Church Whitelackington Somerset. I was wondering if my Ruth could be a daughter of Levi Marshalsea. I recently visited Whitelackington which is such a small village, probably less than 30 families at that time (& enow)so feel sure there must be a connection. I have no records of family connected to her. Would love to hear your comments. PS: My Ruth is definitly from Whitelackington Somerset and not White Lackington Dorset.
Many thanks - Lynda Benjamin (Harvey)

Many thanks for the detail Lyn. I already had thje 1881 & 1891 data for Henry & Caroline, but I did not have the 1881 Bailey census. The data I am looking for is the Birth for Henry Cox and his father John Cox.

Regards

Alison

Hi Paul,
My wife Lynne and I have been extremely interested in this thread as we have had the same problems as you have had with contacting the Dorset OPC site for something like 12 months or more. We are also TPG customers and I have contacted TPG support staff in the past and they have suggested various things like checking security settings, clearing cache etc but to no avail. I'm not a techie but can go into tools, options etc, and change varios settings, could you contact us offlist at our e-mail address of keilyn03@tpg.com.au and give us some pointers on how to change these DNS settings that have been spoken about, we are running windows XP home edition with the various upgrades.

Many Thanks.
