Where did you get the information from, regarding Sarah Jane being married to CHARLES HENRY Nash. Charles Henry Nash is living with his parents in Bradford on the 1891 census, and also living at Bradford on the 1901 census, with his wife who is called Catherine, and they have a one year old son. There is a marriage listed in the March quarter of 1899 which could fit this.
SO, the Charles Henry Nash who you found, living at the Spotted Cow, with his parents, looks as if he was still alive and living in Bradford in 1901, and your Sarah Jane was certainly not his widow.

In 1901 the family are at Scorton. John refers to Gertrude Alice Nash born Darlington aged 3 born circa 1898 the year in which John Robert & Sarah Jane marry.

Wouldn't the marriage certificate give her father's name which hopefully would be her birth surname? (hopefully there was a father named)

This idea that Sarah was married before came from me and was just based on the fact that there was a child (daughter I think) called LAWSON.
Maybe she was not a daughter at all but servant, visitor or niece.
Only one child born out of wedlock - quite respectable.
