I am researching the family of Joseph Starling born Jan 26/1807 and married Sarah Andrews in Little Sampford, Essex on April 29,1825. They had the following children: Henry, Joseph, Peter, Mary Ann, Thomas, James, Robert. I am a direct descendent of Thomas who with his wife Susanna (nee Marshall) and 5 children emigrated to Norfolk Co. Ontario, Canada in 1880.
According to the 1901 census Henry, Peter, James & Robert still living in either the County of Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Essex or Cheshire, England.
I am looking for additional info on the siblings and extended family who remained in England.

Joseph Starling and Sarah Andrews are my Great Great Grandparents.
Mary Ann born 1845 died 1874.
Robert Starling had a farm in Greenstead Green in Essex
I am a direct descendent of James Starling b 18th Aug 1840 married Hannah Worseldine on 14th Sept 1864 at Ely Countess of Huntingdon Chapel. They had 7 children and a foster child. James lived in Cheshire until he went Shanghai and died there in 1914.

His son Sydney born 1881 in the UK married twice both times in Shanghai the second time to Grace Fisher. Remained in China until 1947 and died nr Colchester Essex in 1950. They had 7 children including my father Robert. All were born in China but all returned to England in stages during the war and just after the war as some were in a interned by the Japanese. Two daughters are alive today. My father born 1924 died 1993 had two children One son who in turn has two sons one who is to marry in August They live in Ipswich Suffolk.

Your posting to mine of July 2004 is very interesting. I am also related to James & Hanna Starling, being my great,great uncle. James the son of Joseph 9b:1807 is my 2nd great grandfather..My Starling line is through Thomas b: 1835 the bro of James...Thomas & his wife Sussanah nee Marshal emigrated to Canada in 1879-1880..

I have been researching this family since 1994. I am also very interested in your line. From your comments I now know why I could never find out what became of James Starling. I am also a member of Genesreunited.com where my familytree is posted and viewed by other members.

I would be pleased to share the information I have on this family.

This has been an exciting day for me as this morning I made contact with a descendant of Rene Claude Starling. His son, also named Rene, lives here in Melbourne.

Sorry I have been so slow at replying. Yes Rene was in China at the same time as my grandfather James. I believe the two brothers had gone there in the late 1890's. My Aunt remembers being sprussed up by my grandfather, Sidney Starling, as a young child and going to tea etc with them. Rene didn't return to the UK but as you obviously now know moved his family to Australia. His brother James died in Shanghai in 1914 at the age of 73
