Rbt WADE Essex UK America 1670s REPOST

ATTN: Originally posted to this board 11/25/09, was up but now gone on archives(?) Also separate post to Essex-uk mail list, also gone from archives. What happened? Was either of these posts seen by anyone? Thanks.

Seeking info re WADEs in Essex England in mid-late 1670s. As I am definitely a newbie on UK research, any advice would be very welcome on how to go about finding:

Marriage record for Robert/wife Lydia prior to 1675; probably Quaker, maybe not yet; no children.

Marriage record for his brother John/wife Frances ca 1690/prior; possible Quaker maybe not.
Children of John/Frances all b UK ca 1690s: Robert, Richard, James, Thomas, Charity; the family to America by 1702 Chester Co Pennsylvania where brother Robert/Lydia were Quakers.

A brother of Robert and John, Thomas, remained in England.

Possible baptismal records; court/parish records, etc., to ascertain their parentage.

Will/probate records of parents or brother Thomas for possible mention of the American relatives.

Replying to either Essex-UK mail list or Essex-UK message board is fine. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

Aileen in Washington, USA
quickcrunch@aol.com
There are, even today, quite a few families who live in boats on the Blackwater, though they would usually be expected to give their port as place of birth, but in a census it is up to the person completing the return, not an official.

So, any sailing/fishing connections?

Can anyone do a look up in the parish records for St Nicholas Harwich
I am after any information on Robert Rose born 1807+/-4 years (each census from 1851 gives a different birth year), he married Susannah Thorp sometime in 1830 I think, although I think he was born in Harwich it may be Warebury, dont know where that is. If I could find out any marriage details or even birth details for Robert showing his parents it would be appreciated. Also Robert was a Gunner on the Revenue Cruiser Scout in Harwich - trying to find any info on that and I cannot find him on the 1841 census although I can find Susannah
Regards Ray
Australia

I am a descendant of Nathaniel's youngest brother THOMAS TOKE LYNCH, a pastor who became famous for his book The Rivulet. My branch of the Lynches now lives in France except for me. I live in Brighton in the UK.
I am researching the link between Galway where our ancestors come from and the Lynches of Antigua. Nathaliel's father was John Burke Lynch who married Lydia Daniel in 1803. Nathaniel's and Thomas Toke grandfather was THOMAS LYNCH the surgeon who married first Sarah Rice then Euphemia, daughter of Gilbert. I want to know who were the parents of THOMAS LYNCH... Can you help??

I have been researching my ancestors in Writtle and have been in contact with another member of the Dines family, John. We both go back to John Dines b c1733 and Catherine Prior/ Pryer b c1732 married 10 Oct 1754 in Writtle. John managed to go one further back than me to John Dines of Ingatestone who married an Elizabeth Rolfe in Great Baddow. Neither of us can find a baptism record for John or Catherine. In fact I had intended to go over to the Chelmsford record centre before Christmas to see if the original parish records for Ingatestone throw any light. However the last time I was there I didn't find anything new but I spent the time looking for another relative from Writtle, whom a lady from Canada and I have been trying to track down for a year or so.
I only do this research intermittently and am not normally a member of Ancestry.co.uk so perhaps if you would like to share notes, you could contact me on iant@mailbox.co.uk rather than through a board?

Thanks for that. I've been reciting Duddinghurst in my head - I think if you imagine a strong accent and a lazy tongue you get to something approaching Dudness quite easily! (Thanks for the idea, Steve).

Hmm, that servant may well be my girl. However as there are quite a few Roasts, Roosts, Rusts and variants around, and not enough info on birthplace in the 41 census to be useful in telling them apart, it doesn't advance me any.

It has just given me an idea though - I have her father's name from her marriage certificate, but haven't found him either. Maybe she left home early because he died (as I have found happened in other branches of the family tree). I'll see what death and burial records are around for Doddinghurst. Thanks for leading me to that thought!

I would guess that it was Doddinghurst. South Weald parish is next to Doddinghurst. In 1901 I have no doubt Dodenhurst is meant to be Doddinghurst. Where Dodness comes from I'm not sure. There's no mention of it on the British Library's 19th century newspapers, and nothing on Seax at the ERO.

There's an Elizabeth Roast aged 14 in Barking as a servant.
Class: HO107; Piece 323; Book: 5;
Perhaps she left home early?

Good luck in your endeavors.

Here are Elizabeth's census references (sorry if this is too much information!):

1851 South Weald (Class: HO107; Piece: 1513; Folio: 440; Page: 21; GSU roll: 87847.)

1871: Dudness (incorrectly transcribed as Sandness) Class: RG10; Piece: 186; Folio: 46; Page: 2; GSU roll: 823309.

1881: Dudness (Class: RG11; Piece: 169; Folio: 54; Page: 10;GSU roll: 1341037.)

1901: Dodenhurst (Class: RG13; Piece: 4; Folio: 46; Page: 83.)

And here is another independent reference to Dudness in the 1851 census:
Source: FHL Film 1341407 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1704 Folio 112
Page 16
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Henry POOLE M 54 M Dudness, Essex, England
Rel: Head Occ: Sawyer Timber

Thanks for your interest and help, everyone!

I'm tending to think it is a real name (or nickname) for a place that we now know as something else. Like So'ton for Southampton. I wondered about Doddinghurst myself, as it is quite close to South Weald, and also the best match for Dodenhurst. But I hadn't come across Dunton, so that is another possibility.

I tried to get a parish look up for Doddinghurst but the OPC doesn't have records back that far, so I'll have to wait for SEAX to get a bit further on with their scanning, or wait til I get a chance to visit (could be a while, I'm in NZ!).

Would love to know your opinions once you've seen the census records.

It's now part of the town of Brentwood.
http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/directory.html

You've already been given some good suggestions as to what Dudness could be.
Thanks for the info

Having spoken to several people who hail from Great Oakley they always just say Oakley I found this common with locals that lived in villages with long names.

I was already aware of the early images but looking for a lookup of around 1829 give or take a year or two. IGI in Singapore is a lost cause because of their restrictive hours.

I actually now believe that John Cowey's parents were not from Great Oakley but from Fordham west of Colchester.

This deemed by his 2 sisters born before him showed Fordham and Mary his mother also showed Fordham in the census returns.

I have sent a request to a fellow RAOGK researcher to do a lookup at the records office so hopefully will find their marriage.

Rick

My name is Peter. My mother's family name is Chinery. I have some details on our Chinery line back to a Thomas Chinery who married a Mary Wright on 11.03.1777. I have not been able to get any further back. All the line is in England but my grandfather took his wife and first 3 children to NZ then Aus before returning to England and enlisting for WWI in 1916. I am new to genealogy so what I have to date is sketchy. I have not a clue whether my line is linked but I would be pleased to pass on what I have. Similarly, any info that would take me further back would be well received.
Regards, Peter Platt.

Many thanks for finding the deaths of John and Maria.

As stated previously their son John was bn c1829 in Oakley as well. He is my 3xgrandfather.

Also of note I believe John 1807 had a sister Susannah c1810 or she was the wife of John's brother and their parents were John Cowey and Mary ??? both bn c 1780 both John and Mary appeared in the census of 1841 and 1851 but still to find their deaths and marriage and any other children.

Anything you find is greatly appreciated

Rick

Do you know if there are records going back to mid 1700's to early 1800's for Oakley.

I live in Singapore and it does have an IGI centre but only open for research 2 hrs a week during the week and not able to attend so makes it hard to do any research from here.
Hi,

I had a look at the map index and couldn't find a Dudness, there is a Dunton quite close to South Weald but Doddinghurst seems a better possibility. The map I checked is of a scale of 1 inch = 2 miles, although the attached index gives the location as B4 Dunton is not there. To find Dunton I had to use Mapquest, Dunton appears as just a spot on that map.

On Google Maps I found a Dunton Wayletts on Dunton Road just north of the A127 (Southend Arterial Road.
Dunton Road branches south off Billericay Road then after passing Dunton Wayletts and going under? the A127 it eventually becomes Lower Dunton Road. Just off to the right of Lower Dunton Road is a spot called Dunton Plotlands, doesn't appear to be anything there though.

By the way there is also a Shoeburyness in Essex. a tad east of Southend.

Regards

Well looking through GenUKI http://www.nivek-systems.co.uk/genuki/ESS/Towns/index.html the only ...ness places I can see in Essex are Wrabness and Foulness and there are no Dud... place names.

The only other thought is that she came from Doddinghurst and had such a strange accent, or speech impediment, that it came out as Dudness. And I have heard some strange place names from my mother in law who was old Essex country.

Perhaps joining the GenUKI Essex mailing list and posting there might get a better response?

Best of luck
Steve

Hi. My ancestor is Elizabeth Roast(b 1827, m James Denton 1850), clearly described on two census entries as born in Dudness, Essex, and in another as from South Weald.

I can't find any such place. Others have suggested Dungeness to me, in Kent but that doesn't really fit - and there are no other Roasts in Kent.

Anyone know where it could be?

From information from my grandfather, the Upson Bookers were tinkers. I know they spent a lot of time in Eckington, Derbyshire, which is very close to Sheffield, Yorkshire.
Family legend says that John Upson Booker was responsible for the death of a gamekeeper and had to "disappear" to Wales for a while, then came back ot Yorkshire as an Upson, but we haven't found anything to substantiate this. Nor do we have a timeframe.
What we do know is that the family for a while was known as Upson Booker, then reverted back to Upson.
Does anyone have any leads for us???
Thanks
Lorraine

Hello Ken,

Thanks for your reply. My connection is through a brother of my great grandfather who married a SALMON. I have been given a lot of info on the family by a descendant who lives in Australia. A few things still puzzle me though so I hope you may be able to help. Possibly, I can be of help to you too.

Regards,

Fred

Actually, you would be a cousin of my wife. I do have some information on the Giffords, but I have not been able to track down all Horace's children. There were 13 of them and I have information on 7. My m-i-l never knew all her siblings. She was the youngest and at least one had immigrated to Australia before she was born.

What information are you looking for and how can I get it to you?

Jim
