Hi,

I am searching for any information on Jonas Roberts Thomas born about 1809 in Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire.

In 1833 he married Louisa Terrett at St Mark, Kennington, London (from LDS)

From the 1841 census on he is living at other places around London and later Westminster. His occupation is something to do with Piano's but I can't read the handwriting on the census.

He had 9 children -
Stephen, William, Jonas, Louisa (my g,g,g,g grandmother), John Joseph, Alfred, Benjamin, Joseph and Frank.

If anyone has any information on Jonas Roberts Thomas or might be able to help I would really appreciate it.

Why do you say he was born in 1809 and W-U-E?

I'm not doubting your belief but such details are often helpful to others.

By the way, it is always adviseable to use capitals for surnames especially for such cases as THOMAS, HENRY, GEORGE etc. which can be forenames.

I got Wotton Under Edge from census data and the age too.

Census data is not always 100% right so he might have been born around the same area or might be a bit younger/older. But over 3 different census's he lists that he is born Wotton Under Edge or Wotton in Dwyde - Gloucestershire. I'm not from the UK so I'm not really familiar with all the place names.

I have only seen his name as Jonas Roberts Thomas on his marriage record. On all the census records he is Jonas Thomas so I don't know how the Roberts fits in or if his middle name is just Robert.

Wotton-under-Edge (pronounced [ˈwʊtən]) is a market town within the Stroud district of Gloucestershire, England. Located near the southern end of the Cotswolds the Cotswold Way long-distance footpath passes through the town. Standing on the B4058 Wotton is about five miles from junction 14 of the M5 motorway.

The baptism of Jonas Roberts or Jonas Thomas or Jonas Roberts Thomas is not given by the GFHS CD of GLS baptisms 1813 to 1837 and as you must be aware, the IGI does not help either.

The marriage of Jonas is, as you found, given in the IGI and as it is an extracted entry, the accuracy is to be expected to be good but errors do creep in don't they?

If you are at a really hard brick wall, I think it might be advantageous to hire and search LDS film number 254601 - Kennington Christenings, marriages and burials, 1825-1833 - at your nearest LDS FHC. (See LDS library catalogue) If only one could find Banns records!

That's about as close as I have come to finding any type of birth record for Jonas.

I'm not familiar with all the British locations because I'm not from there - is Yorkshire close by?
