Gloucester Marriage 1830s

Elizabeth Silvey was born in Gloucester in 1817, bap St Nicholas 5 May 1817, daughter of William Silvey and Mary.

She married Richard Parsons Smith 9 Aug 1837 in St Mary de Lode, Gloucester. She was recorded as being a minor and a widow. Her first husband's surname was Greenus but I have not found this first marriage which I am guessing is between about 1832 and 1837, largely because I do not know which parish to start with. Any help to find this first marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Helen,

There is only one Greenus marriage given on the GFHS CD of GLS marriages 1800 to 1837 and that took place in St John the Baptist. The brides name was not exactly as you gave but very similar.

As the CD is GFHS copyright I can give no more info.

Regards

O who was born in St Paul's parish Glos.

Helen,

As a matter of interest, could you please say where you found the marriage of Richard Parsons X Elizabeth Greenus is not given on the GFHS CD.

Regarding the Greenus marriage to an Elizabeth, there was an Elizabeth having the surname of John Greenus' bride born in Cirencester in 1814. If you have the GFHS baptism CD it will not take long to find her in the esses, but copyright . . . . .

O

P.S. Richard's bride was not a widow.

O,
Thank you for your help.

I have a photocopy that I made in Glos archives of the microfilm of entry for marriage in parish records of St Mary de Lode. The details are

Aug 9 1837
Richard Parsons Smith, full age, Bachelor, Artist, St Mary de Lode, Father Benjamin Smith, Factor
Elizabeth Greenus, minor, Widow, St Mary de Lode, Father William Silvey, Labourer
Witnesses William Silvey & Mary Silvey.

I believe that Elizabeth Silvey was baptised in May 1817, St Nicholas, Gloucester. Daughter of William Silvey and Mary.

Helen,

Elizabeth S. - 2nd daughter so named, means 1st died - bap. on 5th May that year.

There used to be a machine for making pins in the museum Bishop Hooper's Lodging in Westgate Street. I expect E's father would have known how to use it.

If you have not tried the site, go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis... where you will only find IGI entries which were extracted from church records.

Good luck

O

Thank you for your help. The first born Elizabeth was the 1st child of the family and was baptised St Nicholas 27 Feb 1815 and sadly buried there on 10 Mar 1815.

I have been to see the pin making exhibition and found it quite moving as the family were certainly pin makers and always lived very near to Westgate St so it seems very relevant.
