Looking for information on family of Coughlans from Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Elsie Coughlan, age 21, appears in the 1901 British census, employed as a dressmaker and living in Bristol, England with her widowed aunt, Elizabeth (Calnan or Callanan) Fowler, and two of her unmarried young adult children. They were living at 161 Stephens Court, St. Silas ecc parish. Elsie Coughlan would have been born about 1880, in Kinsale. Elsie's parents were William Coughlan and Ellen Fowler, married 1879 in Kinsale.

Is anyone else researching these Coughlans and/or Fowlers?

Hi Kathryn,

I was interested to read your post from a few years ago (see below).

i have noted Elsie Coughlan as being a possibility for my Great Grandmother (Ellen Coughlan)who was born in Ireland in about 1880. Ellen is listed as Elsie Coughlan in the 1911 census when she was residing with her husband (Patrick Randle Hurley) in Cardiff, Wales.

On their marriage certificate (20/04/1909 in Cardiff), Ellen's father is stated to be William Coughlan whose occupation was a coachman.

It is said that there is a family connection to Kinsale. Although, according to the 1911 census, Patrick Randle was born in Penzance, there is a connection to Kinsale as his sister (Jane Hurley) was born in Kinsale in about 1888.

I would be extremely interested to learn if you have made any progress since your 2005 e-mail, or if the information I have provided makes any connections.

kind regards
Martyn

Martyn,

Interesting to hear about your great-grandmother, Ellen (Elsie) Coughlan. Looking at the Free BMD I see a 1902 marriage for an Ellen Coughlan and Patrick Stephen Hurley in Cardiff, although there is a marriage between an Ellen Coughlan and a Patrick Randle Hurley in 1909. I wonder if there was any relation between the two couples!

I have not made any significant progress on this family since my last post, but I remain vigilant. Please do keep me posted. Perhaps on your great grandmother's death certificate there is information on her exact place of birth in Ireland?

According my records, there was another daughter born to William Coughlan and Ellen Fowler of Kinsale: Julia born Feb 4 1883. By any chance do you know if your great-grandmother had a sister named Julia?

I do know that a few cousins and an uncle migrated to Cardiff. Cousin Jeremiah Canty marriage Catherine Savage 30 March 1914 in St Patrick's Church, Grangetown, Cardiff. Does that ring any bells?

Ellen Fowler married Wm Coughlan in Kinsale Nov 8, 1879.

Hope that this helps, looking forward to hearing about any further possible connections!

Kathryn

Hi Kathryn,

Thank you for such a speedy response.

I'll have to make some family enquiries regarding Julia.

it's interesting that the cousins migrated to the Grangetown area of Cardiff. That's where Ellen/Elsie and family were living on the 1911 census.

Ellen/Elsie's dughter Patricia (my grandmother) lived in the area her entire life. In fact, Patricia got married in St Patrick's Church in 1930.

The information you've provided is definitely of great interest. I'd be appreciative of any further infoemation you may have and will let you know if it leads to any breakthough.

Regards
Martyn

Martyn,

In my notes for the Kinsale Coughlans, I see that in the 1901 Kinsale census, William and Ellen Coughlan are residing at #9 Rock Street, along with Cecilia Coughlan, another daughter perhaps or maybe a sister of Williams?? So there is another possibility for you to check out.

According to William and Ellen's 1879 marriage record, William's father's name was Michael.

Keep me posted!

Kathryn

Kathryn,

The 1911 Irish census return notes Cecilia as being William and Ellen's daughter who was born circa 1885. At that time thay were residing at 11 Hogan's Row, Kinsale. I can e-mail you a copy of the return if you wish (unfortunately I don't think I can post it as it's in pdf format).

it also details their having had 3 children with one being deceased. Presumably this would be Julia.

Out of interest, how was it that you established that Elsie Coughlan was William and Ellen's daughter? I'd be extremely interested in any information you may have that I could research further.

Elsie Coughlan is listed as a neice of Elizabeth Fowler's in the 1901 census for Bristol, Gloucestershire. That designation made me assume that Elsie was a daughter of Elizabeth's late husband Robert Fowler's sister Ellen Fowler who married William Coughlan in Kinsale in 1879. I have never seen a baptismal or birth record for Elsie. I suppose, now that I think about it, that Elsie could also have been the daughter of one of Elizabeth's sisters who married a Coughlan. (Elizabeth's maiden name was Calnan or Callanan.)I don't know if Elizabeth had any sisters or if any married a Coughlan. All I know about Elizabeth is that her father's name was Timothy and that he was a carpenter in Kinsale.

Hi Kathryn,

I hope you're keeping well. I'm still researching Elsie (Ellen?) Coughlan, but with little success so far.

One thing that has struck me is the fact that it's probably unlikely that Elsie Coughlan and Ellen who resided at #9 Rock Street, Kinsale are the same person. The rationale behind this is that, as far as I can ascertain, both the English and Irish censuses for 1901 were undertaken on the night of 31/03/1901.

I'd be interested in any thoughts you may have.

Kind regards
Martyn

I agree, they do. But they usually occur in the same town. In different countries?
