Hi

I know what you mean, I've left it a while and can't understand my notes now! Since your message I have been in contact and met another cousin of ours Patricia. Francis Russell (the 2nd) married a John Stock and Patricia Cox is on that line so we share all share the same Great Grandparents. I really enjoyed meeting her and she kindly gave me a copy of a photo of our great grandfather John Holder born 1802/3 wearing breeches and a magnificent top hat! If this would be any interest to you then let met know. A first cousin of mine also recalls her Mother Sarah Fanny Elizabeth Holder writing toa relation in Canada so could that be a member of your family?
Would like to have any information that you have

Regards
Helen

Kind regards
Helen

Thanks for your response. However, as these children's baptisms were taken from the parish registers, I believe them to be more accurate than the IGI.

My query was not so much about the children as it was about his parents. Since he was not baptised in Pin N Jay he does not show on those parish records. Without knowing his parish, I do not know where to look for his ancestry.

Again, thanks for taking the time to answer.

Cheers, Caroline
Caroline,

I suppose it's because I worked in quality assurance so always checked provenance of whatever that I checked the info. you gave:-

James Neal 1802, - not found
Eliza 1804, - batch C017186
Edward Colston 1806 - not found
William 1809 - not found
Charles 1810 - not found
Mary Ann 1812 - not found
Emma 1813 - not found
Ann 1716 - batch C042275 - date 1816
Edwin 1818 - batch C042275
Sarah 1820 - batch C043006
Helen 1822 - batch C04405
Joseph NEALE 1823 - not found

The batches are allegedly extracted but I do not think the LDS double extraction procedure was used so they might be inaccurate. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis... and http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html

The LDS has not filmed the St P & J marriage records so you should search the Bristol RO's on line catalogue to find out if they have the marriage register.

Regards

O

Hiya, dont think this is our john lee or elizabeth lee. dont know the name of the lady john lee married. it was believed elizabeth (his daughter) was an only child but not sure. Elizabeth went on to marry Richard Hutchinson. Both John Lee and elizabeth and her husband were hawkers. so if your ancestry comes from hawkers it may be a possibility.

Pity you did not say where they were married but there's plenty of choices nationwide. See freembd for info to enable m-cert purchase.

Having the name Lee perhaps they were Romanies in which case I think you've little chance of success.

O

Thomas J S BELL m Harriet BARNES Clifton 1873

My great great grandfather (Thomas) James Sylvanus BELL was born in Batheaston on 17/12/1843 to James and Arabella (nee BRIMSON). James BELL was born in Keynsham Somerset in 1804, while Arabella BRIMSON was born in Batheaston in 1813. Does anyone have any further information on these BELLs or BRIMSONs?

On 07/09/1873, Thomas James Sylvanus BELL married Harriet BARNES at St Jude's Church of England, Clifton. Harriet was born 06/01/1853 in Stroud and lived most of her early life in Bristol. She was the daughter of William BARNES and Miriam BENNETT (no further information known).

Prior to emigrating to Australia aboard the steamship "Goalpara" on 07/11/1883 (arriving in Moreton Bay Queensland on 01/01/1884), the couple had five daughters - Christiana (born 1874), Maud (born 1875), Annie (born 1877), Mabel (born 1878, died 1880) and Millanda (known as Melinda, born 1881). The family history from their arrival in Australia is quite well-documented but I am keen to know if anyone has any information relating to the family origins in Gloustershire. Thanks in advance.

They had a son called Levi Lee, this maybe Elizabeth's brother? If any of that fits you will be helping me as Levi is the only offspring i know of for John and its highly unlikely in those days to have had just one child. They lived in Stroud. Please let me know.
Regards
Michael Lee

(Sarah?) Elizabeth GURNEY (Mrs Joseph FRY) b Bristol abt 1808

I'm looking for any information about an Elizabeth Fry, or possibly Sarah Elizabeth Fry, born in Bristol abt 1808 from all the census entries. My husband's family have letters from the 1870's to her from Bristol relatives, and there are memories of food and clothing parcels being sent to her from the family - the story is that she married 'beneath her' and that she was related to Elizabeth Gurney Fry. She married a James Kay in 1828 in Sunderland and the daughter who is the direct ancestor is Jane Cooper Kay, born in 1841 in Sunderland. James Kay was a shipwright, and signed his name with a mark on Jane Cooper Kay's birth cert. The eldest daughter Mary Ann was born in Windsor 1833, the eldest son John born outside County Durham abt 1827(1841 census only for him so far) and the family were then settled in Bishopwearmouth, Durham. Other known children Elizabeth 1837, Rebecca 1844
I couldn't find a marriage for Elizabeth Fry and James Kay on familysearch.org, although there was a marriage on another tree for individuals of this name in Sunderland in 1828 but it was unsourced. There is a marriage on familysearch.org for a Sarah Elizabeth Fry and James KEYES in Westminster in 1824, but the surname of James was definitely Kay.

I've now confirmed from Jane Cooper Kay's birth certificate that her mother was Elizabeth Kay. Elizabeth is the name she used on all this and the census entries except the one after she was widowed - then she gave her name as Sarah E Kay. Interestingly the family 'story' is that she was Sarah Elizabeth Kay or Keyes. (birth years from census's are 1808 x2, 1810, 1798 (think this is an error - matches her older husband's birth year) All places of birth given are Bristol.

Does anyone either know about this person, or know about all the relatives of Joseph Fry and the other 'chocolate' Frys and can help me find what the connection is.

The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum (SOGM) is pleased to announce that following eighteen months of hard work by our staff and a devoted band of volunteers, the content our web site http://www.glosters.org.uk/ has been very significantly upgraded:

- The online collection of the Gloucestershire Regiment has been updated with approximately 5,000 new records and about 1,800 new photographs, and the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars by a further 300 new records and about 150 new photographs.

- New, much higher quality images have also been added to most items, both new and existing and all such images are now available for download in an improved form.

- Most item descriptions have also been rewritten and extended to aid readability. Additionally we have improved our technology to make the collections more easily searchable, e.g. where we have the names of individuals in group photographs, all these names can now be searched for.

The SOGM museum web site is leading the field with its web technology which covers on line databases of all its collections and of soldiers who served which the regiments in the 19th century and in World War I. There is also an on line exhibition capability and a featured item from the museum collections which change regularly. So, if you haven’t done so for a while, please do visit the site and have a look.

We are soon to start work on the next web release and would welcome your feedback and requests as to what else you would like to see on the site. Please reply to this post with any comments you may have.
It is possible that she had to leave him as he is not shown in any census as living with her.

Best wishes.

Vivian

I have the birth certificate for James Close, illegitimate son of Eliza Close, born 1863 in Clifton Union House, Stapleton. James is living as a boarder with a family in the 1871 census (I can find no connection to this family) and I wonder if there are any records held of Clifton Union House which might give me some information about Eliza. I have no idea who she is, or where she came from, and it has brought this line to an abrupt halt.

Any help with tracing Eliza would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Vivian

Have a look at the site for Blakeney Hill limestone mine. It shows (Gibralter) in brackets.

aditnow.co.uk

Blakeney Hill (Gibralter) Limestone Mine (United Kingdom)

Ann HUMPHRIS (or HUMPHRIES) living in East Dean 1851

I am trying to find out some information about Ann HUMPHRIS (or HUMPHRIES) who is on the 1851 Census as living in East Dean with her 3 children, Edward, Mary Ann and Elizabeth.

Ann was born in Somerset, but the children born variously in Awre and Westbury. Intriguingly, her occupation is shown as ‘receiving pay from the father of her children’ but no father is shown on Mary Ann’s birth certificate.

The ‘Name of Street Place or Road’ shown on the census looks like ‘Gibraltar’ – I believe this might in some way be related to the Blakeney Hill Stone mine, but can anyone tell me any more about the area or recommend any source of information I can refer to?
