Just on the offchance I was wondering if any kind soul might be in a position to have a look at a marriage in Herefordshire Archives at some point in the future please?

I have all the details except residence and father's occupations which are key to establishing if in fact it is the right family. They are not part of my direct line and so in a very cheeky way I was trying to find the info without the expense at this stage of either the certificate or the search service available in Hereford Archives.

Just in case the details are (from Ancestry)

Parish Marden
Groom John Watkins, Age 26, Father John Watkins
Bride Mary Ann Caldicott, Age 20, Father William Caldicott

It looks like John Watkins senior married Ann Maund in the same church Marden 9 Aug 1851, the Watkins family live a few miles away in Wellington. In census both fathers are said to be agricultural labourers. John is probably older than the age given at the marriage if I have the right one?

Thanks Freddy but I think that John Watkins and Ann Maund belong to another family. My John Watkins Snr was born in Much Marcle HF in 1815 and married Sarah (Wheeler?)b Marden 1822 prob between 1851-1858. I have been provided with her maiden name by a cousin but have not found the marriage yet. The family seemed to always live in either Dymock or Much Marcle. Thanks, Helen

Hi Helen - The marriage does seem to be missing, I think young John is registered Ledbury, and William in Newent, I imagine you have been here http://www.forest-of-dean.net/
to see parish records, but they only do those parishes that overlap into Herefordshire. If you enter Sarah Wheeler in the 1841 census there is only one and the birth year is spot on, she's in Hereford with probably a widowed mother Catherine and younger siblings.

I imagine there is always a chance they didn't marry? If they did I doubt if they married very far from Ledbury

Thanks for all your help Fred, the website is a top tip - I haven't used it before and it's full of info.

John & William have a younger sibling Thomas b1861 from whom I am descended so I can confirm their mother's maiden name by sending for his birth cert which might help find the marriage.

It still leaves the puzzle of whether the John Watkins marrying Mary Caldicott in my original post is the same John Watkins b 1853 in Ledbury district.

Perhaps it will have to join my long list of queries to check out when I eventually make it to Hereford.
