WATKINS, BEVAN/BEAVAN

I'm looking for further details on the family of Thomas Bevan WATKINS christened 1805 at Lloeaur Faew BRE, (father Thomas, mother Elizabeth BEVAN). He was a Saddler, married Sarah JONES prior to 1837, and lived in Eardisley HEF from at least 1839 to 1860, he died pre Nov 1866. Sarah died 6 Nov 1866 at Clifford HEF. They had the following children: Cecelia, born circa 1837; Diana Beavan, born 27 Mar 1839 Eardisley, married Charles LEWIS; Thomas Beavan born circa 1840, married Anne HELO; James born circa 1842; Sarah Agnes born circa 1845, married Charles MOORE; and Caroline born circa 1849, married Thomas LILWALL.
I have found a marriage on the IGI for a Thomas WATKINS and Sarah JONES, but its 1819 (making the groom 14yrs and a huge gap before they had any children), so this can't be the one.
I have also found a marriage for a Thomas WATKINS and Elizabeth BEVAN, but this is also unlikely to be the right one either as it is in 1786 and there are no other children.
If anyone can help fill in these blanks, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Brooks

I have a Benton family with a Mary Brooks living on the Isle of Wight in 1841, allegedly from Herefordshire (something like Dedfort / Delfort) although in another census they are from Essex and Kingston-on-Thames (it's driving me crazy!) The head is Thomas Benton born around 1784, married to ELizabeth b. about 1790. Also in the house is Mary Brooks b. about 1767 who may be the mother of Elizabeth Benton, therefore nee Brooks.

Does anyone have any Brooks or Benton links in Herefordshire, or suggestions as I'm stuck at the moment.

Richard Holloway, Mathon, Hereforshire

I found this interesting snippet on the National Archives site:

"Between James Parker and Susannah Parker, of Mathon, of the first part, Anne Giffins, of Worcester, of the second part, and Richard Holloway, of Mathon, of the third part. Concerns a messuage and related property in Hanley Castle" dated 1757.

I'm specifically interested in Richard Holloway of Mathon. I have a Richard, b. 1791 or 1792 in Upton on Severn but can't find a record of his birth. I was wondering if this might be his father. My Richard married a Sarah Brooks in 1815 in Tewkesbury.

Any additional information would be much appreciated!

Peter Holloway

I am looking for information about my great-great-great-grandmother Sophia, from the 1871 and 1881 census I have discovered she was born in about 1849 in Hereford.

She married John Glanville of Oxfordshire(1828-1888) sometime before 1871, but I have no idea when or where. They had 7 children that I know about: John Edward, James, Alice Sophia, Annie, Gertrude, Elizabeth and Mary.

After John died she married again, to Walter Summers in Swansea, Wales.

If anyone has any information on Sophia's background, family or even her maiden name I would be very grateful.
Thanks,
Laura.

Thomas Benton / Elizabeth ?

I have these as ancestors who, unhelpfully, are recorded as originating from different places in different censuses. I do know they were both born in the 1780s and by 1841 (until their deaths) were on the Isle of Wight. The 1861 census records them both as born somewhere like De[lfort] Herefordshire. Would you have an idea of what De[elfort] might actually be? Is anyone aware of a Benton family in this area?

Your help is appreciated

Hello

I have 3 ancestors buried in the church yard in the centre of Ross on Wye (st mary's ?). I visited it last saturday with the instructions "they are buried by the churchyard wall".

Well apart from the fact that part of the churchyard is being dug up by archeologists at the moment I hadn't anticipated how big it would be so...

Can anyone tell me who I could contact to find a plan of the churchyard... a sort of "who is dead and where they lie"

Many Thanks

Pennie Yorath

Price family l800's Lyonshall/Weobley /Pembridge
I am researching my maternal g.grandparents and their families: Susanna and Charles PRICE of Lyonshall. Susanna was born PRICE in l847 in Weobley. She married George PREECE in Lyonshall on 6.10.1864 and they had 4 children that I know of. George was, apparently, killed in a sawmill accident (possibly in Kington between 1874 and 1879). My g.father, Charles PRICE, (b. l856 Pembridge), had to tell Susanna the sad news and went on to marry her himself, in Lyonshall, on 20.02.1879. They went on to have six children of their own, one of whom, Alice Dorothy PRICE, was my mat.g.mother. The family eventually moved to Dowlais, S. Wales. In l913 my g.mother's eldest brother, Stephen PRICE went to work with the Metropolitan Mission in Seattle, USA, taking his youngest sister Mary with him. He became a pastor. Any news on anything here - UK or USA - greatly appreciated, especially confirmation - perhaps in local papers - of the demise of George Preece! Thank you.

I have a George Bridges and his sister Emma Bridges who were put into care in early 1900's. George went to a home in Hereford which was supposedly connected to the Cathedral. He sang in the choir when he was about 8 years old. Emma went to a convent school in Bath. Their mother Caroline died in 1904 and their father James could not look after them. Does anyone know of these homes or know where I might find records to show a list of "inmates" until the next census comes out?
Thanks

My grandmother, Elizabeth Gertude Lewis was born at Buckholt, MON in Dec 1877 [I have her birth certificate]. I'd like to find out where she was christened - it was not Whitchurch HEF where her siblings were christened before and after her. I have her record in the 1881 census. I'd also like to know what the 1871 census tells of her parents, William and Louisa Lewis [nee Morris, of Buckholt] and any other children - perhaps at Whitchurch or Llanrothal HEF or at Buckholt/Dixton MON. This is tangled, so any help welcomed!
He was a widower of 55 when he married my gggrandmother Elizabeth Folland. She already had 2 daughters that took on his name(Palmer). A son was born soon after they were married..Thomas Charles Palmer in 1879. As he was a widower I know there must be children from this first marriage. I would like to find the missing pieces. There is a story here that I am trying to put together. Does anyone recognize
this Charles????

My direct ancestor is James Price (born 1833-1837 according to census reports), from St Margarets, Herefordshire. All I know is he married a Mary or Margaret Davies and had children in Glamorgan, Wales. I cant find a baptism for him, and he died in 1881. I cant find a marriage, as the census reports say his wife is Mary, but their daughters birth cert (presuming its the correct one, although Im 99.5% sure it is) says Margaret. Even with marriage certs, I wouldnt know if I'd got the right James. He was a Dairy man, then worked on the railways.
Hi,

I am researching my James Family who were from the Almeley / Eardisley area of England.

George James was married to Mary Probert on July 28, 1842 in Eardisley. According to the record George was born in Almeley around 1799, son of George James.

I'm curious what records are available from Almeley and if anyone knows anything about this James Family.

Thanks, Mike

P.S. Attached is the original marriage record from 1842.

Would some kind person put me & my fellow researchers out of our misery! We're trying to find a baptism of John Anthony, possibly Leintwardine or the surrounding area, to parents James Anthony and Susan Lavender. We know of his existence via a will his brother James made in 1784.
We have found the baptisms of all the other siblings but not John!
His birth would be anywhere between 1715 and 1730
Submitted records on IGI are not very helpful as only a few of his siblings are recorded. Someone has provided us with a partial transcript of Leintwardine, but again the crucial years are missing.
If anyone is making a visit to Hereford record office we would be very grateful if they could help us out.

Please can anyone help with a look up in Leintwardine records for me. I have 4 siblings, names established from a will. I have a gut feeling that they all were baptised in Leintwardine. The birth dates are all approximate apart from the first one, which was worked out from his marriage license.
James Anthony born 1719
Thomas Anthony born c. 1720
John Anthony born c. 1722
Susannah Anthony born c. 1729
James, Thomas and Susannah have been found on an IGI submitted record for Leintwardine as children of James Anthony and Susan Lavender, however I'm sure there is more to this and as I've found before -not all records submitted are 100% correct.
If anyone can find the birth of these four, especially John to parents of the above, then I'd be extremely grateful.

Hi,

I have a convict ancestor, Jane FLETCHER, tried in Hereford, March 1803, and arrived from England on the vessel 'Experiment' in New South Wales, Australia on Sunday 24th June 1804.

IGI indicates to me that she was baptised 11 Jun 1786, Orleton, Hereford, England to Richard EDWARDS abd Tabitha nee LLOYD.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the Orleton area? Nothing much on the web I'm afraid. Is it a rural area or a town?

cheers,
matt

Hi,

Related to another post - I have a convict ancestor, Jane FLETCHER, tried in Hereford, March 1803, and arrived from England on the vessel 'Experiment' in New South Wales, Australia on Sunday 24th June 1804. She was baptised 11 Jun 1786, Orleton, Hereford, England to Richard EDWARDS abd Tabitha nee LLOYD.

On Google I found a reference to an 1803 article in the Worcester news: At Hereford Assizes yesterday, Jane Fletcher, aged only 15, for the murder of her new born bastard child, was capitally convicted and sentenced to death.

I also understand that "Hereford Journal" between 23 March 1803 and 4 May 1803 had details of the trial. If anyone has access to these publications at that time, whilst in the process of other research, I'd love to hear from you on the nature of the trial.

cheers,
matt

Allan Reeves was my great grandfather. He was born in Eastnor in 1847, father William also born in Eastnor about 1794. His mother Ann was born in Powick, Worcestershire about 1798. Allan moved to London some time after 1861. He had a brother Samuel and sisters Ann, Elizabeth and Maria.

I would be very interested to find any link to the Reeves family in Hereford as all contact seemed to have been lost possibly after the move to London. It appears they had a very poor existence with my grandfather, Allan's only child, being educated in a refuge and his wife and in laws dying in the workhouse.

Looking for farm records or something, hopefully.

Also, if anyone has any info on a John Jones, shoemaker in Mordiford around 1890-1900, who I think is maybe my great-great grandfather. I think she may have been born in Stanford Bishop but moved to Leeds to marry my great-grandfather, Hubert Young. Her name was Mary Mitchell and she will have been born around 1880-1885.

Any information about her or any of her family would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Laura

Hi, I'm desperately trying to find the birthdate/ birthplace/parents of William Lawrence (occ; Miller) residing at Waterloo Mill, Kingsland,Herefordshire in 1815 the 1841 census states birthplace as Kingsland,Herefordshire. gives an approx b'date of 1786. but I have searched all the sites I know of to verify this without success. I have an unsourced marriage to Ann James at kingsland,Herefordshire in 1815,
Maybe if I could find marriage details/certificate it would bive up some clues, Please can anyone help?.
Joyce.
Could any one help me in finding out more about the Bridges family from Ledbury? I have gone back as far as William Bridges (Brydges)c1801. The 1841 census gives him living at Homend (Street) He married Mary ( Fleetwood?) c1808 at Ledbury in 1830 and they went on to have 7 children.
William died c1885 in Ledbury. Later census info states that he originally came from Cradley and that he was a farm baliff.
Could anyone point me in the right direction to find his parents or when they came from Cradley etc. I did travel to Ledbury and searched through the library records but was unable to get into the record office during my short visit to Herefordshire.
Thanks

Lane in Hereford/Ross On Wye

Hi,
I have an extracted chrristening for James William John Theophilus Lane 06/05/1814 in Hereford and I have him on the 1851 census with wife and children living in Compton Abdale, Gloucs. His parents are listed as James Reece Lane and Mary Ann. I've looked through the IGI and found 2 more of their children and also their marriage - James Reece Lane and Mary Ann Parry 24/05/1813 Woolwich, Kent. James is listed as Lieut. Royal Marines on the 1851 census which may explain the location.
James Reece Lane was chr. 27/02/1790 (extracted entry) son of James and Anna Jemima. Again looking through the IGI I found 5 other children of James and Anna Jemima including a James Taylor Lane chr. 11/02/1787, and presumably not surviving. This would make the extracted marriage between J. Lane and Anna Jemima Taylor 01/01/1785 a likely contender. I can't trace the christening of this James but I think there is a link with other Lane families in the area because of the 'Theophilus' connection.
Firstly there is James William John Theophilus Lane b. 1814, then his father James Reece Lane had a brother Theophilus (19/07/1791 Ross On Wye). I've found Theophilus Lane chr. 19/03/1718 Hereford, probably the same Theophilus who marries Ann Bulloch 20/04/1718 Hereford and another, who marries Juliana Rodd 02/03/1744 also in Hereford. They have a son Theophilus chr. 31/01/1745 (all extracted dates). Does anyone have info. on this family, I'd be interested to know what became of the Theophilus b. 1745 as I have a generation (or even 2) missing between him and James Lane who married Anna Jemima in 1785.
I hope you've been able to follow this.
Angelaj

Help - Vanished - Ivy Maud Dando

Hi,
Im looking back into my family history and ive got a relative whos disapeared! - my late grandads mother.

Ivy Maud Dando, born Sep 1894 - Hereford UK. I have found her birth registered and shes listed upon the 1901 census (living in Hereford with her father Ernest James Dando and sister Iris Geraldine W Dando). Then the next piece of information is where she gave birth to my late grandad (Roy Brown Dando - Brown being a middle name) in 1919.

She gave birth in a hereford "nursing home" (named upon Grandads birth cert) - so i presume that she gave birth to a child out of wedlock? On my grandads birth cert, no father is listed (maybe the Brown for his middle name relates to his father??) and Ivy's occupation is an ex policewoman in Hereford.

Since 1919, I can find no records of her. No deaths etc. No one is left alive in my family who would know further information either.

Rumours are that she went to London to train as a nurse and left my Grandad behind to be raised by an uncle in Gloucester - still looking into that theory!

But I cant find any data relating to Ivy for the UK or USA after 1919.

Any ideas anyone????
Zena77

I am currently researching the Walters family tree in Little Dewchurch, Herefordshire. All the Walters who have lived there since around 1851 are related and I am trying to find the relations or any information regarding any Walters, in particular James and Frances (Fanny nee Priddy) who married in 1864 and had 8 Children - Myra Jane, Rosannah, William, Frances Mary, Leah Ann, Bertha, Ruth Matilda, Dora Harriet and James Herbert. I believe that the Walters came to Little Dewchurch from Llangarren or possibly Llancloudy (James Walters senior was born abt 1837 in Llangarren or Llancloudy and I believe his parents were called Thomas and Jane). Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
