I would be interested in hearing from anyone researching the COX and WARREN surnames from Benington in Herts. U.K.,
but I would particularly like to hear from anyone who can help me find out the birth place of my grand-father JAMES WILLIAM RULE.b. 1888. He lived most of his life in Benington, Herts.but was not born there. I know of a James Rule from Radwinter, Essex, but I have no proof that they are one and the same. Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
Valerie
I am searching for WILLIAM THOMAS SPOUSE, 72 years, who's death was registered 3/4 of 1947 in Biggleswade. The family lived at Greenfield, St. Johns Road in Hemel Hempstead in 1924 however I understand there was a large hospital in Biggleswade so he may have died in hospital. Many thanks - Joan

Hi, does anyone have access to the 1901 and 1911 Census please that could look up this lady for me and let me know anything you can about her ie her parents and if she had sisters or brothers.

I am also looking for a possible marriage for her. I know she was with my Grandfather in or around 1939 until he died in 1969 and then she died in 1979. Lee was her maiden name but on her death certificate she is given as Bryant which was my Grandfather's surname. He was George Richard Bryant. It may well be they never married but on her death cert it states "maiden surname of woman who has married" Lee.

This one is a bit of a mystery but am hoping something can be found. I do not have money to purchase credits therefore am asking for some help please. I only check to see if anyone has replied to my messages every now and again as I am at work during the day.

Kind Regards

Kathryn

George Gray b ~1807 d ~ 1910
Truly doubt it could have been the much later born Jacob as that surely does NOT fit...
Thinking it could have been an UNCLE rather than brother to the Nancy Gray b ~ 1812 who married Joseph Rainbolt (I mean that might fit and he would definitely still have been an uncle to my grandfather just with another 'great'...) I am not sure that my grandfather actually said that it was Nancy Gray's brother but it was surname Gray and my grandfather's uncle regardless of how many greats were involved...

Hi yourself Chief! You must have been reading my mind as wondered yesterday if lady who posted quiry on George Gray had contacted you. Have you gone through all children's children of Jesse Gray? I haven't but will try to do that today--although--George is not a name that was ever used (to my knowledge) in my Rainbolt/Gray/(Mays)Maize line. Another mystery genealogy question--any new info on father to Jesse Gray? Who we think was Charles? Toni

I only know what my grandfather said. It is possible that it could have been another generation back or something, but that is not the way I remember hearing it. It seems that he must have gone by George Gray at least. I suppose he might have been a younger uncle who was ~ 5 years older than Nancy Gray rather than a brother... he would have still been an uncle to my grandfather. However, I know that often terms of uncle etc. are used w/o specifying 'great' etc. (probably especially when age is more similar to being a sibling rather than parent/uncle etc.

Hi Toni, long time no talk.
I think ther is a possibility that jocob gray may be George.
but I can't prove it yet. I too have nothing on George.
Jocob born 8 july 1838, was the first child of Jesse and his 2nd wife--
[ Hanna Barnes]. They married in 1837 after nancy died in 1836.

Jesse gray returned to Clinton co, Ky, After Nancy died.
that's when he met Hanna and got married.

As have have posted recently, I stand by Jesse Gray as being the father of Nancy gray born 1812.

Nancy Rainbolt [ Gray ] died in 1835, At Hamilton co, Ill.

I posted the Marrigage Bond for Jesse gray and Nancy
Rainbolt , just a few days ago.

I am 3rd GrGrandchild of Margaret Jane Gray Mays/Maize child to Jesse & Nancy Rainbolt Gray. I have documentation on Margaret Jane thanks to her husbands civil war pension papers where she had to prove marriage and etc., also have copy of MJ's marriage bond & lic where Jesse's name appears. Okay, so I forwarded your quiry that came to me to Gray Cuz who along with myself looked into our Gray files and found no George anywhere. We're wondering if George may have been a nick name? Could you send more info, birth date & place, marriage info & etc on brother(?) to George? This may help locate him (George). Toni Maize

Jesse or Joseph Gray and Nancy Rainbolt it seems must be parents of my Nancy Gray who married a Rainbolt and had 12 children who lived to adulthood I believe. My grandfather knew a great uncle George Gray who was his Nancy Gray's brother. At least the birth date of 1812 for my Nancy Gray fits. My grandfather b 1894 remembers going to George Gray's funeral (supposedly this George Gray was 100+ when he died). Among the children of Nancy Gray and her husband Jesse? Rainbolt were Hamp the oldest, Lish or Elisha, Mary Ann,....??/? but we had counted 12...

Hi again Kathryn
Of course you are not being a nuisance - I understand only too well how these problems can get under your skin!!
I have just searched through the marriage records quarter by quarter from 1935-1945 and there is definitely no marriage listed between Bryant & Lee. I would assume that as she gave the children the Bryant surname that your grandfather was named as father on the birth certificates. The only other possibility is that Edith was married earlier to someone else and then married Bryant. This would mean that her previous married name would be on the marriage certificate but her maiden name would be listed on the childrens birth certificates.
I have not given up yet!!
Pam

Hi, does anyone have access to the 1901 and 1911 Census please that could look up this lady for me and let me know anything you can about her ie her parents and if she had sisters or brothers.

I am also looking for a possible marriage for her. I know she was with my Grandfather in or around 1939 until he died in 1969 and then she died in 1979 in Streatham, London. I know she was in London in 1940 as a child was born to her in Battersea, London.

I have some information my Great Grandparents, John & Elizabeth, that I'm not sure the reason for. On thr Ellis Island website I found entry for John & Elizabeth departing Liverpool, England on Feb 6, 1908 and arriving in New York on Feb 15. They indicate that they arrived in England in 1907. Their nearest relative in England is listed as living at Highbury(?) Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
Now at that time my Grandmother, their youngest, would have been only 8 years old. According to the ship's manifest none of the children accompanied them.
I thought that possibly they returned due to the death of 1 of John's parents but Thomas died in 1903 and Lucy in 1910. Could have been due to 1 of Elizabeth's parents- haven't got any death dates for them.

Yes, I am also a descendant of John and Phoebe. Like you, I descend from Thomas & Lucy however our branch is from their youngest son, George. I have a gedcom available so I'll get that e-mailed to you.

I believe John, Elizabeth & their two children can be seen in the New York Passenger Lists. I have a reference of

Year: 1888; Arrival: New York , United States; Microfilm serial: M237; Microfilm roll: M237_516; Line: 2; List number: 354

FYI John, the son of John & Elizabeth does state that he was born in Hitchin on his WWI registration card. Hitchin has a current population of 30,000 however it would have been smaller in the late 1800's. The top surname in Hitchin in 1881 was Smith with a total of 160 individuals. Lawrence doesn't feature in the top 10 surnames so you can be relatively sure that your link is correct. I should think he chose to move to the US to escape poverty.

Thank you for the information. This agrees with, and adds to, information I received last year in another reply to my posting. The woman who sent that reply was a descendant of John and Phoebe.
I realize that Lawrence is a rather common surname, so I must ask, are you related to my particular Lawrence family?
If you wish, I can be contacted at sdo58@yahoo.com
Again, Thank You for the info and I would be interested in any other information you may have on the family.

Sincerely,

Scott D. Orbaker

Thomas Lawrence (1830-1903) was the son of John Lawrence (c1800-1839) & Phoebe Welch (1800-1873). He married a Lucy Hide (c1830-1910) in 1851. One of their children was indeed named John Lawrence and he was born c1865 according to the 1871 census. In 1871 the family were living in Queen Street, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

There were 9 children in total however the first child may not have been Thomas' biological child. Henry Hide, later Lawrence, was born 18 months before Lucy's marriage. John had a brother 1-2 years younger than him named Thomas.

Hi again Pam

If I'm being a nuisance please let me know. Edith had a daughter Zillah Bryant born 1940 Battersea and then Wendy Bryant born 1943 in Battersea. It may well be that she didn't marry and just used the surname. Unfortunately I don't have the credits or money to buy them. Any help is of course brilliant.

Thanks again Pam

Kind regards

Kathryn x

Hi Kathryn
Have looked at the marriage records on Ancestry but there were a lot of Edith Lee's out there & unfortunately the date of birth is not given in the index. I definitely cannot find her marriage to a Bryant. There are 2 marriages in London for Edith Lee:

1. married Feank King Jun Q 1931 Paddington 1a 111

2. married Thomas H Pittam Mar Q 1944 Fulham 1a 473

BUT there are 13 marriages listed for Edith Lee in Middlesex 1916-1964.

Do you have the name of her child born in 1940 in Battersea?

Sorry couldn't be of more help[
Pam
Hi Pam

Thank you very much for all the information it is much appreciated. I don't suppose you have the facility to try and find out if Edith Lee born September 1899 every married please. Hope you don't think I am being cheeky. I know she ended up in London and was there from at least 1939/1940 and she died in London on 1 September 1979.

Kind Regards

Kathryn x

See http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/bmd/memorials.... for information as to where to look for memorial inscriptions in Hertfordshire.

However most will not cover 20th century burials in town cemeteries - and you should contact the relevant town council as they will have records - if you provide the name and date of death (as described on the death certificate. The death certificate may well provide sufficient information to find an announcement of the death (and perhaps even an obituary or even more if there had to be an inquest) in the appropriate local newspaper.
David
Me again
I found a Levi Taylor in the 1841 census, his wife Sarah and the son Joseph you mentioned. Sarah had died before the 1851 census as Levi shows up as Widowed
I found a maariage though the dates are a bit out to say the least but a Levi Taylor married Sarah Wilkinson in Abbots Langley on Feb 13th 1804
Lottee
