Hi David
spent much of last night going through the evidence I have and think the Mary connection most unlikely now.
I have found however - Baptism Apr 14 1857 Edward age 28 yrs of Edward & Ellen WALLIS Mepal father lab which looks to be my Edward. the 41 & 51 census to which you refer is i believe the right family and this would show Edward as a widower - also no sign of wife in 1841.
there is also possible deaths - Burials Jul 20 1832 Ellen WALLIS Mepal age 15 died of cholera.
Jul 24 1832 Thomas WALLIS Mepal age 6 died of cholera. Local history shows an epidemic at the time which wiped out large sections of the communities around the area however I hav't yet been able to go back further.
Have no Edward / Ellen marriage yet either.
Many thanks Katie
