I am trying to find out how to locate a baptismal record for William Leete,son of John Leete and Anna Shute,born circa 1613. Some of us who are descended from him are trying to learn if there was more to his name than William.
Any suggestions as to how to locate a record will be greatly appreciated.

It was very unusual at that time for anyone to have more than one christian name.

But first of all I think you need to decide where William was from. There is no Dodington in Hunts, although there is a Diddington. There's a Doddington in Cambs and in other counties too, and Dodingtons in Gloucs and Somerset. Looking at the IGI there are member submissions giving William's birthplace as being in all of these. Others say Midlow, Hunts. What evidence do you have that he was the son John and Ann if no baptism has been traced?

Who did your William Leete marry, and what children did he have. This may help you to pin point more accurately where he actually came from. There are Leetes listed on Find my Past, but not as early as 1613, they appear to be in Cambridgeshire.

well, who did he marry?? Who didn't he marry!!! His first marriage was in England (according to the IGI)in Hail, Weston, Huntingdon to Anne Payne. She came to America with him along with their first child. She was christened 21 July 1621 also at Hail.The issue with the IGI is that the vast majority of the entries were submitted by LDS members:consequently there are dozens of listings for William Leete and looking thru them, they appear to all be for the same person, but from different places...so how does one determine from whence he came? He has been 'attached' to John of Dodington as his father.John is listed as a son of Thomas Leete and Maria Slade. The farthest back my information goes is to a death date for one Thomas Leete who died in Oakington (presumably Cambridgeshire) in 1564.

These are marriages for Leete in various places, but mainly Cambridger. Taken from Find my past. This is far more accurate than LDS. I have a subscription to this site, so if you want to know who any of them married, let me know and I will get them for you. I will look to see if there are any burials, I know that your baptism is not there.
