Elizabeth
Pogson was married at
Horncastle, Lincs. 31 Dec 1793 to William Townhill. The marriage records at that time do not identify parents nor provide ages of the participants. At least two Elizabeth
Pogson(s) could be the bride. One was born 1768 at
Horncastle the daughter of John
Pogson and Elizabeth (
Garland). The second Elizabeth was born 1774 at
Horncastle the daughter of Peter
Pogson and Mary (Jordan). Both John
Pogson (b.1744) and Peter
Pogson (b.1738) were sons of Robert
Pogson and Elizabeth Scott married 1732 at
Horncastle. William and Elizabeth Townhill lived at
Chapel Hill, a hamlet in Coningsby
Parish, Lincs where five children were baptised 1798-1814. By 1833 they may have returned to
Horncastle as William Townhill was buried there in June of that year. In 1834 their son, John Townhill, married at
Horncastle Mary
Towell and one of their children baptised in 1838 was Thomas
Pogson Townhill. Who is the namesake? Apparently it is Thomas Frederick
Pogson, a butcher, who at
Horncastle in 1840 married Charlotte
Burman. The marriage record identifies the father of Thomas as Peter
Pogson, a victular. In 1851 two of the children of Thomas and Charlotte were living on Far Street in
Horncastle with their grandmother,
Rosamond France. Rosamond was the widow of Peter
Pogson buried 22 Apr 1822 at
Horncastle and was married 22 Sep 1822 to George France. Peter
Pogson (b.1777) was the son of Peter and Mary (Jordan)
Pogson. He was also a brother to Elizabeth born 1774 and she is more likely of the two Elizabeths the bride of William Townhill in 1793. Elizabeth
Pogson Townhill lived with the John & Mary Townhill family in
Horncastle (1841 census) and later in Fiskerton, Lincs with John's family. She died at Fiskerton and was buried at
Horncastle in Apr 1850. Would welcome comment or imput from others researching
Pogson families.
