Hi all,

I'm looking for info on Joseph Johnson from Bassingham, Lincolnshire. He was born about 1776 and to my knowledge lived there all his life. He married Maria Rogers (1778-?) in 1798(Parish Marriage Record). He died in 1850 aged 74.

He had a number of Children, including Caroline, James, Maria, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Jemima and Charlotte.

I believe he was a farm labourer. So far I've been unable to find any records as to where and when he was born.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. It'd be great to hear from someone who is connected to his lineage as so far I don't believe I have found anyone.

I have this family within my tree. They are not direct descendants, but nevertheless I have them. I have Joseph down as being born in Bassingham and so was Maria Rogers, his wife. I have Maria's parents as Henry Rogers born c1749 in Bassingham, Lincolnshire and Susannah Burrows born c1750. They married 8 August 1774 in Basssingham, Lincolnshire. Henry and Susannah's children were:- Job Roberts born 1776, Maria Rogers born 1777, Jesse Rogers born 1780, Anne Rogers born 1781, Elizabeth Rogers born 1783, Keziah Rogers born c1784 (from my branch), Henry Rogers born c1785, Charlotte Rogers 1786 and Jemima Rogers born 1787. Although my link is with Keziah who married John Poole, there is a link to another Johnson family again from Lincolnshire. Could give you more information if you like.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I don't suppose you have proof of Joseph being born in Bassingham do you? I checked out the parish records and couldn't find any baptism records for him or info on his parents; the only proof I have is from Joseph and Maria's Marriage record.

I have a copy of Maria Roger's baptism record (20th Jan 1778) if you'd like to see it? let me know your email address and i'll send it (doesn't work on ancestry's email doh!) I've got all her siblings you mentioned in my records apart from Henry Rogers born c1785, i don't think i found a parish record for that one.

How far back have you got with Keziah and Mari's father Henry? If my tree is correct I managed to get back to about 1700 but the line I took I want to get second proof on. I have Henry Rogers (born 1737) as their father and who married Suannah Burrows and Henry's father (maria and Keziah's Gfather) was John Rogers and Elizabeth Arrowsmith. Do you have this info also? If not let me know and I'll share.

Have you been to Bassingham church yard? there are a number of Rogers and Johnson grave stones there :o)

I have search all through my papers and in "my documents" in my computer and sorry to say I have no proof of Joseph Johnson's baptism in Bassingham.

No I haven't gone any further back with Henry Rogers c1749 as this would be like counting the twigs, let alone the branches. With so many Johnson families within Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire, it's getting more difficult to keep them straight and apart from each other. Although I find Johnson families marrying other Johnson families through the ages, even more confusing. My Johnson family is mainly from the Winterton area, seeping down into Scunthorpe/Ashby area.

Nice to talk to another Johnson though.

I am interested in this thread as I am descended from John Rogers (c1697) and Elizabeth Arrowsmith (c 1697) of Bassingham via another son. I was wondering Luke, did you obtain confirmation that this was indeed the parents of "your" and assumably Carole's Henry Rogers (c1735/6)? I profess my computerised filing system is in disarray, and in my rush I have not always recorded and linked my sources, but my cousin has collected and physically searched through a lot of parish records.

I have Elizabeth Arrowsmith as daughter of William and Catherine Arrowsmith both born about 1675 in Lincolnshire (details must come from Parish birth records for Elizabeth!), and John Rogers as born about 1697. I note that other members of other boards have 30 Apr 1692, so needs confirmation.

My line, I believe, is through a son, Matthew (c1735),baptised 15 May 1735 at St Michael in Bassingham, which may conflict with birth dates of the "siblings" you have recorded, from which your branches originate. I have not found records on Freereg to confirm other siblings, as yet.

I would love to be certain that our 3 branches can be linked together!

Matthew married Elizabeth Thompson (c1735), and had a son Matthew (baptised 28 Jan 1767) along with several other siblings all baptised in the same church.

Pleae let me know if you think this is the same family.
