Hi, I'm new to the list having just found that one of my people, came from Lincolnshire, as yet, I don't know.
Was wondering if anyone had a George Retchless/Retchler m 1853 to one Sarah Ann Adams. I believe George's parents may have been a John, and mother, Hannah. Hannahs' parents could be William Adams and Ann Hutchison.
If anyone has these in their tree or is able to check the '41, '51 or '61 census to see if they can locate the above, I would be very thankful.
Glenda
Aust

Bertram Huthwaite (born abt:1873 died abt 1900) was married to my great aunt, Annie May de Nieuwerkerk in the early 1890's and died shortly after 1900. His parents are stated in the 1900 census to have been born in England but I do not know their names. Any information about him, his parents and ancestry, and any siblings he may have had would be greatly appreciated.
William de Nieuwerkerk (WillKerkGen@yahoo.com)

Hello Barbara
I hope you are still taking an interest here - this message was dated 2003! everytime I get close to something your name appears so I hope you can help me.
My grandfather was William John Barnaby Marris b:1882 Gisborne, Vic. His father was John Barmby Marris b:? Lincolnshire - the only information I have on him is that he was married to Emily (Gillard) Marris and that he was a baker. I can't move on until I know more about this couple and I can't seem to find anything more. Would love to know if you have anything? Thanks, Greg Marris

This is interesting, as the marriage index has his name originally entered as DEVONPORT then apparently amended to DAVENPORT.

There was no one of either spelling in Lincs in the 1911 census ... nor any DAVENPORT/DEVONPORT in Boston at all.

We don't usually bother with the United Kingdom bit, England is quite sufficient. This is the order:

Name
Address i.e. House number and street,
area (eg. Werrington or Bretton)(if there is a specific area mentioned),
City, town or village,
postcode (you call it a zip code),
county,
England.
Pam

Hello Ellen,

I realize your original post is from quite a few years ago, but hope that maybe you can still help me.

The IGI for the British Isles lists a marriage for a Henry TOMSON and Elizabeth MOSS, 02 Aug 1702, St John, Stamford, Lincoln, England.

In order to prove or disprove whether this is "my" Henry TOMSON/THOMPSON I need to check the church records to see if there are any baptisms for their children - John, Thomas, Rebecca, and Dinah. All or some of these children would have been born between their marriage in 1702 and their arrival in America in 1710. Needless to say, if birth/baptism records can be found for the children, I'll be wanting anything else that can be found on this family!

However, I live in Oklahoma, USA. Is this something you can tell me how to accomplish, or something that you can do for me? I am more than willing to pay for any and all expenses that might be involved.

Thank you in advance,
Carol Payne
carol.aries329@gmail.com

Thanks for your fast and informative reply!

And so the plot thickens. My experience with my own family research should have prepared me for the fact that instead of a nice, neat solution, an assortment of choices often appears to cloud the issue. ;o)

If I had some idea who added the info on the back of the sampler, and when, it might help. Unfortunately, the sampler was purchased at auction and no further information was available.

I appreciate the additional leads you have given me. My work, it appears, is just beginning. :\

Ruth Ann
Mystery of Mary Hannah Gipson/Gibson, Scamblesby

Does anybody have a family member called Mary Hannah Gipson or Gibson who was born in either 1794 or 1827? I own a needlework sampler that was stitched by her at age 9. The date stitched on the sampler is simply "183". It does not look like there was ever a stitched 4th numeral on the sampler.

Information on the back of the sampler appears to have been written at 3 different times. The earliest states: "This should be 1803, not 183--. Traced through cemetery." (Later writing adds "at Scamblesby Lincs.")

Also, later writing crosses out the "1803" and substitutes "1836"; and adds "Mary Hannah Gibson b 1827 Lincolnshire, d 1888."

The latest info is a modern self-stick label which states" Sampler by Mary Hannah Gibson in 1836. born 1827 in Lincolnshire died 1888. Buried at Scamblesby, Lincolnshire.

I'm trying to figure out if the Mary Hannah who stitched this sampler is the one who was born in 1827 and is buried in Scamblesby, or if there was an earlier Mary Hannah born ca 1794 who stitched the sampler in 1803.

Hoping somebody with Gipson/Gibson connections in Lincolnshire can shed some light on this little mystery.

I am a descendent of a William Temperton, born Butterwick, Lincoln in 1797. He married a Mary Burley in Barnby Dun in 1828, but she died in the late 1840s. He married another Mary a few years after that and had another family. None of his children were called William. Your William and mine would have to be related though.

Re: Stamford area of Lincolnshire willing to do lookups as I live here.

I am not sure if you are still willing and able to do any look-ups in the Stamford area. After 5-6 years of searching to discover my gt grandparents names, I finally discovered them about 2 months ago, and even more surprisingly found the family came from Lincolnshire. You see my father and his father, came from London, and that is where I thought the family stemmed. The ancestor I am looking for is Thomas Foster born about 1774. I'm not sure if he was born in Stamford or Careby - references seem to give both. Looking at the map, Careby seems to be near Stamford, so that is probably where the confusion arises. All I know is that he married Elizabeth Clear about 1795. I would really appreciate, if you are able, in knowing where he was born and who his parents were.

With many thanks.
Sandra3939Lee (nee Foster)

I have a John Grove Leason (Leeson) who, according to his Wisconsin death record, was born in Barrow, Lincolnshire, England on 23 Jan 1833. He was a son of John and Catherine (Grove) Leason. This family was in Wisconsin USA by the 1850 USA census.

John and Catherine had at least three other children, all daughters: Elizabeth (b. Jan 1827), Ann (b. abt 1829), and Lucy (b. Jan 1835).

According to her death record, Catherine Grove Leason was born 16 Aug 1796. Her father was William Grove; her mother is not yet known.

Any help in learning more about this family before they left Lincolnshire will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi
Do you know of a Porteus who married Agness Willey around 1865? The Willey's came to Hope in late 1820's from Lincs. They stayed in Hope until sometime in the 1860's when they appear to have moved to Grey county, so the marriage may have been in Hope or Grey cty. From there they went to Michigan and then Kansas. By 1880 Agness Porteous was a widow with a daughter Maria born 1869 in Canada living with her family in Riley Kansas. Can't find a marriage record from Agnes. Would appreciate your help.

Caroline

I have found baptisms for the family I am interested in as I look at the parish records on the IGI for this location.
Michael Kempshall and Sarah Stennet had George, Michael and Alfred baptised here between 1827 and 1834; then they moved to Canada.

I am now trying to determine the parents of Michael, who according to the Canadian census was born about 1801. I see that there are two Kempshall baptisms in this parish in batch C030332 [roughly 1660-1812] ... George in 1800 and Robert in 1809; but no Michael, here or anywhere else in that time period. George and Robert were the sons of George and Jane; Michael named his first son George; any significance to that?

Where else might I look for Michael?

Thanks, Ruth in Canada
Albert was in Peterborough in 1901 (indexed LARBINE by Ancestry).

Fred's marriages
Marriages Dec 1880
LARKINS Frederick Wisbeach 3b	1337
MIDDLEBROUGH Elizabeth Wisbeach 3b	1337

Marriages Jun 1898
COGGLE Emily Lincoln 7a	1285
LARKINS Frederick Lincoln 7a	1285

Fred was buried 21 July 1930 (71)
and Emily 8 Sept 1943 (75), both of Ripon Street. I can't see a burial for Elizabeth.

The Florence KNOGHT (10 in 1901) living in Dixon St looks quite likely as it is close to 416 High St (between Sewells Walk and Queen St).

Private Arthur Larkins

i am a year 2 Heritage Studies student in Lincoln. one of my assignments is to research a WWI soldier. the soldier that i am researching is Arthur Larkins. he was born in Lincoln December 1889. he died 8th June 1917 in France. he died in action.
he was married to Florence "Florrie" Knight. i don't have any information on her at all. they were married in 1915.

i have researched his father Frederick Larkins but i have found that he was in the 1891 census as being married to Elizabeth (can't find her maiden name) and living with sons Albert, Walter, Herbert and Arthur Larkins. they lived at 51 Gibbeson Street.

but in the 1901 census Frederick is listed as being married to Emily (maiden name possibly Wenn). the children are listed as follows Walter, Herbert, Arthur, Lottie, Bertha and Nellie. Albert isn't on there as i suspect that with him being 19 at this point, he's possibly moved out of the family home. they were living at 416 High Street.

if anyone can help or give me any more inforamation, i would be ever so grateful.
kind regards
samantha hipwell.

Sarah Ann Whitlam was born illegitimate daughter of Eliza Whitlam (Whitelam/Whitelamb). Eliza later married Frederick Chambers. Eliza was still alive at 83 in 1911 (Donington on Bain). Sarah Ann was known as Sarah Ann Chambers but married as Sarah Ann Whitlam (took a lot of finding!!)

She was my husband's gt-grandmother.

Loads of Bradleys from North Thoresby in our family! Sandy are you still out there?? If so, get in touch.

Julia
