John Leason: Lincolnshire to Wisconsin USA

I have a John Grove Leason (Leeson) who, according to his Wisconsin death record, was born in Barrow, Lincolnshire, England on 23 Jan 1833. He was a son of John and Catherine (Grove) Leason. This family was in Wisconsin USA by the 1850 USA census.

John and Catherine had at least three other children, all daughters: Elizabeth (b. Jan 1827), Ann (b. abt 1829), and Lucy (b. Jan 1835).

According to her death record, Catherine Grove Leason was born 16 Aug 1796. Her father was William Grove; her mother is not yet known.

Any help in learning more about this family before they left Lincolnshire will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi
Do you know of a Porteus who married Agness Willey around 1865? The Willey's came to Hope in late 1820's from Lincs. They stayed in Hope until sometime in the 1860's when they appear to have moved to Grey county, so the marriage may have been in Hope or Grey cty. From there they went to Michigan and then Kansas. By 1880 Agness Porteous was a widow with a daughter Maria born 1869 in Canada living with her family in Riley Kansas. Can't find a marriage record from Agnes. Would appreciate your help.

Caroline

I have just started investigating my family tree. I am the grandaughter of John William and Frances Eva Meanwell who lived at Legbourne Station house for many years. I know there were many great aunts and uncles but since my father and his brother and sister have now died I am finding it difficult to find information. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers family connections to this branch of the Meanwell family
Sue G

If you searcg your IGI batch C030332 for children of George and Jane (no surname) bap 1805 +/-10, you will find 6 baptisms, 4 of them HEMPSHAL - including Michael 1804.

A possible marriage - about 15 miles away - could be
15 May 1800 at Morton by Bourne
George KEMSHER to Jane TORY

Jane was buried 10 Feb 1821 at Moulton aged 43.
George KEMPSHAL (wid) married Sarah SMITH 13 Sept 1836 at Moulton.

George was buried 17 Dec 1843 aged 75 and Sarah 20 Nov 1856 aged 66.

I have found baptisms for the family I am interested in as I look at the parish records on the IGI for this location.
Michael Kempshall and Sarah Stennet had George, Michael and Alfred baptised here between 1827 and 1834; then they moved to Canada.

I am now trying to determine the parents of Michael, who according to the Canadian census was born about 1801. I see that there are two Kempshall baptisms in this parish in batch C030332 [roughly 1660-1812] ... George in 1800 and Robert in 1809; but no Michael, here or anywhere else in that time period. George and Robert were the sons of George and Jane; Michael named his first son George; any significance to that?

Where else might I look for Michael?

Thanks, Ruth in Canada
William Jardine Clayton

I am looking for any available information on an Australian who migrated to Napa, California and later became a veteran during the American Civil War. His name was William Jardine Clayton who was born on December 27, 1835 in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, the son of George Thomas and Elizabeth Eleanor Clayton. In 1850 George Thomas, Elizabeth, William and the rest of the family migrated again, when he was fifteen years of age, to the United States where he became a naturalized American citizen.

California census records reveal that in 1860 William was living with his mother and sister at Napa County, California and when the American Civil War erupted, William enlisted in the Napa Rangers, California Militia and married during the war years. After the war William worked as a farmer and by 1880 was divorced. William Jardine Clayton died in 1932 at ninety-seven years of age in the city of Lakeport, in Lake County, California and was subsequently laid to rest in the Hartley Cemetery in Lakeport, California.

I want to acquire information relating to him, his marriage, his family so he can be added to the Veterans Memorial website, www.acwv.info relating to veterans from an/or buried in Australia.

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

James Gray
www.acwv.info
Brisbane, Au.
Hi Mary
Sorry, I am a very new user on this site. I noticed you have a connection from the Jarvill branch down to Frank Mumby born 1886. Frank was my great grandad.
I am trying to piece together my family tree, and would welcome a little more information on the Jarvill branch if you have any to share.
Thanks
Paula
Eliza was still alive at 83 in 1911 (Donington on Bain). Sarah Ann was known as Sarah Ann Chambers but married as Sarah Ann Whitlam (took a lot of finding!!)

She was my husband's gt-grandmother.

Loads of Bradleys from North Thoresby in our family!
Hi,
Many thanks for your response.
Ann Elsom, daughter of Samuel Elsom is my Great Grandmother.
I have her siblings names and a brief history of her father. I would like to further my research into the family. I have visited Ropsley, where Samuel Elsom married and Welby where they also resided. Search of churchyard proved a negative.
I have a few details on the Elsoms including a letter that was wrote by Anns mother to her on hearing of her marriage to my G Grandfather.
Any details on this side of the family (Elsom) would be most welcome.
You do not say if you are also related to the Elsom "clan"!
If you require any information, albeit, very little, that I have on the Elsoms, you are most welcome.
It is believed that Samuel Elsom was a magistrate also a inn keeper at a pub named the Wagon (Wagon & Horses?).

Kind regards.

Rob Guyatt

my e-mail address:
maxdata3@hotmail.com

That would be great. As far as I know, My earliest ancestor there would be William Burton (1785-1856) and Mary Blackburn (don't know her dates) Also buried there would be their son William 1814-1871 (and some siblings) and possibly his wife Caroline Waters/Walters b 1821 ... and some of their children as well. No doubt there will be cousins so I am looking forward to seeing the MIs!!

Thank you Alison!

You sound so enthusiastic that I just had to go and find them and load all the Burtons I found. they are now waiting for you at Find A Grave http://www.findagrave.com

I have a relative who lives there, would you like me to ask him ( he's a geneaology nut too) to see if he can find anything else for you??
my email address is alisonglass(at)ymail.com
If you are interested contact me there and I can send you the 'original' photos. that way you may be able to see something I missed!!

Now I have done the Burtons I'll take a look and see if I can find any Walters. Many of the stones are very worn or covered with lichens/moss etc so are hard to read

A

Private Arthur Larkins

i am a year 2 Heritage Studies student in Lincoln. one of my assignments is to research a WWI soldier. the soldier that i am researching is Arthur Larkins. he was born in Lincoln December 1889. he died 8th June 1917 in France. he died in action.
he was married to Florence "Florrie" Knight. i don't have any information on her at all. they were married in 1915.

i have researched his father Frederick Larkins but i have found that he was in the 1891 census as being married to Elizabeth (can't find her maiden name) and living with sons Albert, Walter, Herbert and Arthur Larkins. they lived at 51 Gibbeson Street.

but in the 1901 census Frederick is listed as being married to Emily (maiden name possibly Wenn). the children are listed as follows Walter, Herbert, Arthur, Lottie, Bertha and Nellie. Albert isn't on there as i suspect that with him being 19 at this point, he's possibly moved out of the family home. they were living at 416 High Street.

if anyone can help or give me any more inforamation, i would be ever so grateful.
kind regards
samantha hipwell.

Hodgson Family - Barrowby

Dear All

I have a William Hodgson born in 1722 Barrowby who married 3 times and had what appears to be 20 children!

I can only find 6 of this children in adulthood, the problem I have is the burial records of Barrowby are not on-line. I have tried the normal sites (onc. pay to view) and Barrowby doesn't appear to be on the NBI. I can not therefore prove the children died in childhood or not.

The father of William Hodgson is Rhodes Hodgson and Rhodes is appearing as a first name or middle name quite often in the siblings I have found.

The names I have yet to find ( all born Barrowby) are :

Martha 1752, Sarah 1752, William 1753 (may have his marriage grantham), Ann 1747, Mary 1758, Catherine 1759, Robert 1761, Thomas 1769, Samuel 1774, Jane 1771, Valentine 1780.

There are a couple of duplicate names so have assumed the earlier children must have died.

Any help appreciated or if anyone is related to this family I would be interested to know. Also on his 3rd marriage it says William Hodgson Shoemaker

Kind Regards

Debs
