Have you found out anything about the orphanage? My grandfather, Thomas Freeman was orphaned in Newington. I understand this was the result of some accident, maybe on the river. He was born in 1900, and never knew his parents so I guess he would have been sent to the orphanage when he was quite small. He always said that it was the one Charlie CHaplin went to. He said it was in Hanwell, Middlesex, and at that time it was in the countryside ! He stayed there until he was 9 when he was fostered to a family in Ockham, Surrey, so it seems he would have been there at the same time. My grandfather said that it was an L.C.C. Orphanage - whatever that is and had about 300 boys. Please let me know if this helps. Regards
