Lou,

Are you saying you have spotted Bowes Terrace on the 1920
(25" edition ) map ?

I just cannot see it... although the map could be a little bit clearer for my eyes.... The church is within a rectangle formed by Wanley St, Church St, and Bowes Street. Where can you see Bowes Terrace ?

Lou,

I know the name of every street around the church... none was ever Bowes Terrace..

And this is a little away from Waterloo Road itself...

If you look a little to the right (on the map)

See the area formed by Turner St (now Regent St), Simpson St, Trotter st.... and a bit of street to the right of waterloo Rd and to the left of Bridge St. I took this little stretch to be the beginning of Bridge St ( it is Bridge St now)... but maybe in earlier 1900s it was beginning of Waterloo Road.

Can you read any of the names of the back-streets in the area, up Trooter St ?

Lou, I already have that map here beside me. It only names the main streets> Save your money.

On the "Blyth" community web site.... if you look at the 25" version for 1897, you can maybe see things clearer.

And More.... from old telephone directories ( online) I have note that area I pointed out to you, was named Waterloo Road until 1972, when it was changed to Bridge St.

And More...

Go to the "Photographs" section of communities site...

11th foto is view looking up Waterloo Rd. To the right, aiming over top of a lamp post you can just make out the steeple of St Mary's Church, lying in the Market Place

Foto 18 ( count them) shows a similar view but shows more in the foreground... on the right you can see a notice advertising Theatre Royal... that side street is Trotter St.

The shop on right is likely to have been 2 or 4 Waterloo Rd.

Foto 25 is looking at Market Place. The road in foreground is Churst St, Strret with houses, shops, pubs is Market St, the Road at far end is Turner St.

Hope you can get the context.

If 2 Bowes Terrace was same a 2 Waterloo, or was at the back... you folk might have lived above a shop ??

Hi Michael

Looking at the photo's i think you might be right that's why the enumerator got confused and put it as 2 Waterloo road it might not have even had a street sign and if there was only 2 house's why would they bother with a sign.

I think when i go up in the summer i will have to see if there are anymore photo's at the national archives.
The way the lady i spoke to who lived there you could only get into the property around the back up some stairs there was no front door.
Did you find anything on Bullmans or Pullmans fruit and veg warehouse i'm going to look on here at the trade directory see if i can come up with anything.

Lou,

Today ( well Sunday) I was in County Record Office, Woodhorn, looking at all kinds of maps on Blyth... although I could see those back streets which I think are your target, no map held a name for them !
