Hi

I know it's not there now but i do know it was there from around 1911 to 1947 as my gt grandparents were living there in 1911 and my Grandmother died there in 1947 and lived there for most of her life through 2 marriages my father was born there.
Does anybody know of any street's that were near by that might be still around.
I can't even find a map with it on

Any help would be really appreciated

Hi

Thanks for the offer but it is Bowes Terrace Blyth UD.
My gt grandparents were living there in 1911 my Grandmother's first marriage in 1919 she was living my her second and she's still there and my father was born there in 1938 and my grandmother died there in 1947 so it has to have been there at some point.
Or knowing my lot they put a false address i was wondering if it changed name.
The surnames were LAMBERT, GRIFFITHS and FOSTER

Louise,

Your search for Bowes Terrace, Blyth, must be very frustrating for you. Let me add that it is ditto for me.

Me, a Blyth lad have maps, street lists, street names changes, travel guides, etc on Blyth and nowhere can I see Bowes Terrace.

And I have been looking for it since you posted a similar query on another message board.

A wee bit about Bowes Street first. That has always been called Bowes Street... built on open land between 1860 and 1894.

Before 1907 the territory of South Blyth Urban District and of Cowpen Urban District met along UNION St ( there today)

The Blyth bit was east of Union St, the Cowpen bit north and west of Union St. Bowes St lay in the Cowpen territory. In fact the Cowpen UD offices were in Seaforth St, very close to Bowes St.

In 1907, the two UDs merged into one authority. The rapidly progressing new-boy sort of tookover the more ancient Cowpen, naming the new authority Blyth UD.

One of their first jobs was to rename several streets because their names were duplicated.
e.g. Two Wellington Streets ( Cowpen one renamed Burt St)
Two Croft Sts ( Cowpen one renamed King St) Two Market Streets ( Blyth one renamed Plessey Road- end bit added on)

But I just can't see anything on a Bowes Terrace.

If you had just traced the name on one record, then it would be easy to declare it an error, a mispelling. However you have encountered the street name a few times.

The ONS web site for 1901 census allows a search by address. Bowes Street comes up. Bowes Terrace does not.

Similarly the 1911 accepts Bowes Street but rejects Bowes Terrace .

Have you seen your folk on 1911 census at Bowes Terrace ?
If so please give me their details and hopefully it should be possible to identify neighbouring streets, to pinpoint Bowes Terrace !

On my father's birth cert he was born at 2 Bowes Terrace Blyth U.D 1938. George Foster

The death cert for my grandmother again 2 Bowes terrace Date 1947. May Foster.
I have even sent a message to Woodhorn just have to wait for reply

Louise,

Let's take the change from " 2 Bowes Terrace" to " 2 waterloo Road" as a clue to pursue.

Maybe it was the 1911 census enumerator who changed it, maybe thinking he knew better.

Looking at mixture of modern and old maps, here's what I think the situation was....

Waterloo was/is the main street of Blyth. Prince of Wales ( my first booze) is @ 58 Waterloo Rd, Oxfam shop is at No 40, on corner of Waterloo Rd and Church St.

Today there are no more buildings on the even side of Waterloo Road. There used to be a block of building there covering where I figure numbers 38-2 would have been. In my time (from late 1940s) this block included a large church and a picture house, the Central, but I cant remember any plain houses.

Anyway this is now open land, allowing the market place to occupy a larger space.

The "Photograph" section in the Blyth part of communities.northumberland.gov.uk includes pix of this area, but not good ones.

Suggestion... contact Blyth Library ( closed this pm) Put your query to Librarians Mark or Ann (she a local) . Usually super helpful. Bridge St, Blyth NE24 2DJ tel 0845-6006401 ( They hold Electoral Registers from about 1929.)

Louise,

I notice from the 1911 census the even numbers for Waterloo road go 2>12>36>38/40 etc.... so numbers sparse at the end of the road nearest centre of Blyth.

Hi Michael

I will give them a ring in the morning.
As you said in an earlier reply if it was only on one i would have said the same as you maybe it was a mistake but to have it on so many i can't be.

But how can some place just disappear without any trace i have goggled it to death in every shape and form and all i every get is Bowes Street.
I did look on the 1911 census for the address 2 waterloo road.It shows there are 2 but one has my Lambert's in and another family in the other.

Hi Michael

I have got a bit more info not to sure whether you will know this or not but here goes.

It was called Bowes terrace there was only 2 houses there i think the one i'm looking for was above or near Bullmans warehouse who delivered fruit and veg.
The shopping center in know on the spot where it was.
Here is some other info that i was given i don't know whether this is right or not i couldn't understand her properly.
It was in or by Trotter street another one i can't find.
A place called Woodcocks and Church house.
I didnt want to ask this person as i haven't had any contact with her for about 30yrs she's not interested in family history brings back bad memories but that's what i got from her the i could understand anyway.
