Louise,
Your search for
Bowes Terrace,
Blyth, must be very frustrating for you. Let me add that it is ditto for me.
Me, a
Blyth lad have maps, street lists, street names changes, travel guides, etc on
Blyth and nowhere can I see
Bowes Terrace.
And I have been looking for it since you posted a similar query on another message board.
A wee bit about
Bowes Street first. That has always been called
Bowes Street... built on open land between 1860 and 1894.
Before 1907 the territory of South
Blyth Urban District and of Cowpen
Urban District met along UNION St ( there today)
The
Blyth bit was east of Union St, the Cowpen bit north and west of Union St. Bowes St lay in the Cowpen territory. In fact the Cowpen UD offices were in
Seaforth St, very close to
Bowes St.
In 1907, the two UDs merged into one authority. The rapidly progressing new-boy sort of tookover the more ancient Cowpen, naming the new authority
Blyth UD.
One of their first jobs was to rename several streets because their names were duplicated.
e.g. Two
Wellington Streets ( Cowpen one renamed
Burt St)
Two
Croft Sts ( Cowpen one renamed King St) Two Market
Streets (
Blyth one renamed Plessey Road- end bit added on)
But I just can't see anything on a
Bowes Terrace.
If you had just traced the name on one record, then it would be easy to declare it an error, a mispelling. However you have encountered the street name a few times.
The ONS web site for 1901 census allows a search by address. Bowes Street comes up. Bowes Terrace does not.
Similarly the 1911 accepts
Bowes Street but rejects
Bowes Terrace .
Have you seen your folk on 1911 census at
Bowes Terrace ?
If so please give me their details and hopefully it should be possible to identify neighbouring streets, to pinpoint
Bowes Terrace !
