Donna,
One of the most famous Tyneside factories was Armstrongs Factory ( Vickers Armstrong). This was situated on the Scotswood Road and people living in Elswick would certainly
work there.
The famous Tyneside anthem 'The Blaydon Races', written about an event in 1862, in the second verse says "we flew past Armstrongs factory...." which certainly dates Armstrongs to the era you are interested in.
