I tend to eventually look up in the records things I find in the IGI. The IGI had my Peter Makepeace marrying some Ruth Bolton. I looked all over the place for her. Then one day I looked for that marriage and as clear as day--my penmanship teacher would have been proud--no mistaking any letter--her last name was Bilton. And there were lots of family about. Also the parish record frequently will hold some other tidbits of information, often an abode where they lived, occupation. It is worth it to look at the record if you can.

Janis

Goodness me.. sounds like they couldn't make up their minds what to be! No wonder Robert left town!

There are many Dewars on the IGI from the Parish register transcripts. The IGI includes baptisms 1574-1812 and marriages 1695-1812 for the parish church of Berwick upon Tweed, Holy Trinity, (Northumberland)and I have notes of all those Dewars and there is no Robert amongst them

There are also the Dewars already mentioned Peter Dewar and Jane Craig who had a child Robert but born in the wrong year, which says on the IGI that it is Extracted marriage record for Coldingham, Berwick County, Scotland.

The IGI also includes these following and there are no Dewars at all amongst them
(Bankhill Congregation
United Presbyterian) 1835-1838
(Chapel Street Or Shaws
Lane Or Relief Chap.
United Pres) 1764-1858
(Golden Square
Presbyterian Or Scotch
Church) 1771-1837 Marr 1782-1812
(Primitive Methodist) C080371 1824-1837
(Roman Catholic) 1793-1840 Marr 1793-1840
(Walkergate Lane
Calvinistic Baptist) 1805-1837
(Wesleyan Methodist) 1796-1837
(Workhouse) 1837-1861

Looking at GENUKI to see what records are available it seems to me that they are scattered everywhere, and so it seems like I shall not be able to trace my mother's family any further back than the 1851 census. What a shame, but there you are.

Thanks again,
Caroline

But it also says that Peter Dewar and Jane Craig are extracted from Christening: Chapel Stree or Shaws Lane or Reliev Chapel, United Pres, Berwick upon Tweed
Northumberland County England

I am having a hard time with the dates--1800's or 1900's? Tynemouth or South Shields?

I do not find the boys baptisms in Tynemouth Christ Church. There are Gregory's though--Edward bapt 1814, George 1822, Nicholas 1832 all with parents Edward and Elizabeth.
I do see two children of Emanuel and Martha 1857 and 1858.
No marriage in Northumberland for a Ellen Gregory and Robert Maving

I think Martha Gregory according to the 1911 census was in Walker Road St. Peters, Newcastle, 71, and a widow, if that is her, born Gateshead Co. Durham.

Peter Gregory and Eleanor Allison married in Jarrow Co. Durham. She remarried at South Shields St. Hilda

You might find a death notice in a Newspaper or just get the death certificates.

Have you looked in census records?

Janis

No there was no Peter or Alice. Robert Dewar married Bathsheba (just love that name) and they had children...
John James
Robert
James William
Bathsheba Isabella
George
Richard
Elizabeth

Somehow I get the feeling that the family we have discussed is not theirs - not a Jane or a Peter amongst his children.
All the boys went into printing as apprentices, or errand boys, or lithographers or such, but poor old Robert was a labourer and then a laundryman.

Reading the first paragraph it looks like it depends on the years that you want --it was several denominations. 1755 form from disgruntled Low Meeting hHouse members, seated about 800 people!!!! 1767 connected to the Chuch of Scotland(Presby) Later dissatisfyed with the minister then they were part of the Relief Synod - I have no idea what that is. But it was from this time 1785 that the registers that are transcribed started. Then after some disagreement in 1835 it became the Bankhill Zion Chapel. Later some other name--but now it is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of England. Sounds like it was for the most part some form of Presbyterian church.

Janis

I found a Robert Dewar baptism at Berwick Shaws Lane:

Robert Dewar baptised 4 May 1806, born 28 April son of Peter Dewar, Mason, Berwick and Jane his wofe lately Craig

Also a John born 6 Jan 1800, Jane born 28 Oct 1803, Alice born 6 June 1808, Peter baptised 9 June 1811, Eliza born 12 July 1815. These are all to the same parents. Perhaps some of the names repeat in the family

Janis

Dear Janis, I do recall seeing this name Craig some years ago when I was first looking for my ggg grandfather, but because the year 1806 just didnt match the census data for 1851 (50) 1861 (60)and 1871 (70) and his death record which is this one below, I discarded that info thinking that something else was bound to turn up. This was when I first started in 98 or so, and I did't realise that something else may not turn up!

Deaths Dec 1880 (>99%)
Dewar Robert 79 St. Geo. East 1c 272

Robert has a son John, but didn't everyone?

The info is also on the LDS site for Christening: Chapel Stree or Shaws Lane or Reliev Chapel, United Pres, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland County England

Thank you for your interest

Caroline

Can you enlighten ?

Michael

Is it possible that someone has access to any information that will help me track down the birth of ggg grandfather named Robert Dewar born 1801 Berwick on Tweed, Scotland, as per the 1851 census when he lived in St George's East, London, as a labourer?

I would be so grateful for any help as I don't quite know how to start. I live in South Africa so I am unable to see any original records, and I can't seem to make out which parishes are in Berwick, and indeed if my ggg grandfather was Anglican or Catholic.

Thanks a lot

Hello Michael

Thanks for this, but I have done a lot of looking up on the net and have even found one of the birth registers online up to year 1700, but no matter where I look I have to buy something in order to go further on Robert Dewar's birth. I have been into all the links on Genuki and there is nothing online. My only other option is to go to the Church of LDS in Jo'burg and order the films on Berwick from Utah.

Well at least I am at the starting line..... On 1851, in Tower Hamlets, page ref 1547-410-9 ( i.e. Piece (of territiry) = 1547, Folio ( two sided sheet of paper manually numbered on "front" side, but not numbered on reverse)= 410. Page (numbers printed on both front and back of a folio)=9

I had difficulty finding him by surname as the facility I use had him as Drerer.

Although the London census enumerator can be excused for his geographic ignorance, Berwick-upon-Tweed was not in Scotland, although close to it. You can read a wee bit about it in web site communities.northumberland,gov.uk

within the Berwick section.

Berwick had many churches covering a range of religious denominations- more later.

Michael

Hello Michael, thank you for your quick reply. I am sorry I don't think I have that reference as I have had his info for years without being able to do much about it. However, I do have a photocopy of the page from the LDS library here in Jo'burg. Enumeration distrcit, St George (in the east) 23, Saint Mary 1, No of district 15, Page 403 (top RHS) then on the page of his enumeration it has a number HO 107/1547, and the page number is 9. No 1 Thomas Place, Robert Dewar, aged 50, Labourer b.Scotland, Berwick on Tweed. Any help much appreciated

I suspect Margaret Rutter may be his grandmother. Margaret Wheatley married Thomas Rutter in Newcastle St. John 28 Feb 1830. The marriage does not say if they were single or widowed unfortunately.

Why not just get Charles Win Wheatley's birth certificate--you will get father and mother's name--or at least mother's name
1840 Sep ¼ Castle Ward 25 234. You can order directly from the GRO and costs £7.00
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Charles is one year old in the 1841 census--look up Margaret RutterHO107/821/10 folio 13 page 1

Janis

I can find him now, I thought it might be possible to find him on the 1911 census, and this would have given his parents names, but there is no John Kirk Smith, so he must be down as John Smith, and, as you can imagine, there are thousands of them. Do you have any idea of his parents christian names, or his mother's maiden name, as this would enable you to find the marriage, and then you just may be able to work backwards. With a name like Smith, you are always going to have problems.

Name: SMITH, John Kirk
Registration District: Nottingham
County: Nottinghamshire
Year of Registration: 1987
Month of Registration: November
Date of Birth: 3 May 1906
Volume No: 8
Page No: 844
Reg No: 1187
Thank you so much for all this information. The James McDougle, "General Dealer" on the 1911 census clinches it, and the rest ties in perfectly. Are you related to this family? I note that his wife Margaret McDougle was not at the same house in the 1911 census. There should be a daughter, Eva, who inherited and ran the general store in Bamburgh. This is from oral history in my own family.

You have some of your information wrong. In res[ect of deaths after 1984, the persons actual date of birth is also given. There are no deaths recorded in Nottinghamshire for Kennet(h) Smith, which have a birth date in 1906 or anywhere near to that date. SO, the question is, do you have the actual death certificate, which will show his date of birth, or where did you get the death information from?

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. The James McDougal you found may be him, but I can't yet be sure. I am still hoping that a member of the family, or a resident of Bamburgh will find this post and perhaps confirm this.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, this is the same James McDougle / McDougal. It seems that there are no members of the family remaining in Bamburgh today. What I really hope to find is when the family moved to Bamburgh, and from where, so I can start tracking back.

Did you know that a James McDougal (& Sons), Merchant, was a publisher of postcards in Bamburgh during the early 20th century? Sometimes the postcards also include the "Valentines" name. It seems likely that this is the same James McDougal.

Hi Ron, There were a number of sites that I recall. One group was the Elswick and Scotswood group which built tanks. I think the Elswick factory closed in the late 70's and work went to Scotswood The other group was the Shipbuilding division which was called the Walker Naval Yard, based in Walker, Palmers of Hebburn ( dry docks and ship repairs ) and the Vickers factory at Barrow-in- Furnace who built submarines. In terms of employees these were in the 000's in each factory. They were originally Armstrong Whitworth factories. I only know of the Shipbuilding side as I served an apprenticeship in the Walker Naval Yard. If it's this side your looking at there is a book on the Lost Shipyards of the Tyne at http://www.southtyneside.info/education-and-leisure/librarie...

Good luck in your search.

Bill Hill
