Classification: Query
Surnames: BUXTON., ELLIS, FUZZEY, DUDENEY, DEWDNEY, ACTON, NASH
I haven't got a lot to go on, unfortunately. I am trying to trace the origins of a Mary Ann BUXTON who was the witness at the marriage of my 3 x gt grandfather, Dr James ELLIS RN, to Elizabeth FUZZEY in 1822 in Bromley, Kent. Dr ELLIS was supposedly from Deptford and had associations with Stepney (Spitalfields) MDX. Mary Ann was probably a relative of his and I have several theories about her. The Buxtons were certainly important to the ELLIS family because one of Dr ELLIS' grandchildren called his home in Sydney, "BUXTON" (it's still standing). I think Dr ELLIS' children may have even been brought up by people called BUXTON (maybe in Stepney). I have the feeling that they were people of some substance and I also have the feeling that they may have set the ELLIS grandchildren up in business. They had timber and boat-building business up and down the New South Wales coast end of 1800s/until about the 1940s. Just a couple of family "myths" which have been handed down the family which may ring a bell ? : -
the ELLIS children in Australia said they had DUDENEY/DEWDNEY cousins in England, Sevenoaks in Kent appeared in the picture somewhere, they were somehow related to Lord Graham after whom Grahamstown in South Africa was named, someone won a VC at the Battle of Rorke's Drift (I've looked at the VC winners for this battle but can't find a name I recognise). The names ACTON and NASH may also have a connection.
Tracie, I have quite a bit of info on the name in the MDX area if you could please tell me what family you are looking for ? Anything would be helpful - maybe I have a Will Index entry or something which may be connected to your family. Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Leigh
