Another ancestor, Levi Morris, born in Titchmarsh, died in Oundle about 1914. Any information that might be found in the parish records, cemetery, death records would be greatly appreciated.

Would some kind soul be willing to check microfilm at a local library or similar for the entry of Alfred E Palmer and his family at Wolds, Northamptonshire. The copy on Ancestrey is illegible and has at least one transcription error in it. Refs are Civil Parish: Wolds, Ecclesiastical parish: Rothwell, County: Northamptonshire; Country: England; Registration District: Brixworth; Sub registration district: Spratton; ED, institution, or vessel: 10; Household schedule number.

The father has been transcribed as Roscoe (I can read Boyce which is correct) I would like to know if there is a Thomas listed and also the notes in the margin. They appear to be something about them leaving the land of the forefathers but I can't make it out. It could account for why some of the children left England for NZ & Australia.
TIA Glenys

Coates and West families

Am looking for descendants of the Coates and West families who hailed from the Weedon Bec (Everdon and Syresham) areas of Northamptonshire, England in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

On my mother's side of my family I am descended from a Samuel Henry Coates who was born in August 1820 in Syresham, Northamptonshire, died 1891 Poplar, London. Samuel's parents were Thomas (a carpenter by trade) and Catherine Coates. Samuel married a Charlotte West in Daventry district in 1842.

The 1851 census shows the family loving in Everdon, N'shire.

Charlotte West was born in Lower Weedon, N'shire in 1821 and died in 1901 in Poplar, London. Her parents were William West (a butcher by trade) born 1773 and died 1851 in Weedon Bec and Anne Spencer born 1786 in Hillwarton. Her parents were Robert Spencer and Alice French. William West's parents were Benjamin West born 1740 died 1791 in Weedon Bec and Ann Gardner born 1746 in Litchborough and died in 1795 in Weedon Bec.

Charlotte West was one of 13 children including William, Ann, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Zillah, Sarah, Ann, Rebecca and Mary. Other children who died very young had the same names as later born children.

Samuel Henry Coates (or sometimes referred to as Henry Coates) and Charlotte West had five children, William b1845, Ann b1846, Benjamin b1847, John H b1851, Samuel Henry b1855, Elizabeth b1857 and Charlotte b1860.

The family ended up moving closer to London and in 1861 were living in St Pancras, Middlesex and 1871 lived in Mile End, London. Their son Benjamin ended up marrying a Jane Riley in 1870 in Mile End and emigrated to New Zealand in 1874, settling in Dunedin in the South Island of NZ.

Benjamin Coates was my great grandfather. He had 4 children, one of which was my grandfather Wilfred John Coates. Wilfred Coates ran away from home when he was around 13, joined the Merchant Navy, sailed around the world during the first World War and ended up in Victoria, Australia where he settled down.

If anyone can offer any assistance with regard to the Coates or West families it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Michael Langlois

Clarke Crickmay Drage Waddons, Roade Northampton, 1780 -1900

I have a Baptism Record of William Clarke, b July 11th, 1784, son of William Clarke and Ann, born in Roade, Northamptonshire.

Somehow this comes together with John Clarke, born 1807, married to Mary Bingham 27 Jan, 1828, then after she died he married Mary Haddon Waddons b 1828, m 23 Feb 1857.

The union of Clarke and Bingham produced George b 1828, m Helen Wakefield; Thomas b Jan 1841; and Ann b 1838 m Thomas Kirby 22 Jul 1857.

The Union of Clarke and Waddons produced Arthur John, b 1858, m Elizabeth Jane Banks b 1857 m 18 May, 1880; James b 1859, John b 1861, and Mary Jane (I think she went by Polly, a dressmakers apprentice) b 1866.

Aunty Polly was the guardian of Ethel Crickmay, who I think was the progeny of Frederic Crickmay and Rebecca Clarke perhaps in Hindon, Wiltshire. Ethel was raised by Auntie Polly Clarke, and was fondly received by the Clarkes of Roade.

I have many pictures of the Clarkes dated from the 1860's to the 1890's in Roade. The photographs were taken in various studios, F.W. Burnham, in Brixton S.W.; Blake and Edgar in Bedford; Alexandra Photo in Bedford; W.S. Wright in Olney; F.W. Broadhead in Leicester;A Maxwell and W. Playle both of Bishop's Stortford, and one of the oldest of Auntie Polly and Uncle Jim, with Great Granddad John Clarke taken by W Chattle, High Street in Olney about 1866. Photographs include Clarkes identified as Bert, Jim, Polly, Ginny (married to a Waterman later) Annie, Liza (nee Drage) and more, and need help identifying these people, and their connection with Rebecca. Perhaps Rebecca was also the daughter of John Clarke and Mary Haddon Waddons, but the records I have found don't prove this.

It's a fascinating collection, and no doubt will generate a lot of interest. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Mike Dodds
Can anyone tell me what is the best way to trace a line back beyond the the middle 1700's? I have been able to get information up to this point but am stuck as to how to move forward. Would church records be the next step, if so, how do I go about figuring out what church?

Thanks!

I am researching the BALDWINS who lived in Deenethorpe c.1870 and moved to Kettering by 1901. I am specifically looking for information on ALGERNON EDWARD BALDWIN (born 1889), possibly known as Edward or Ted, or any of his siblings or parents (James and Ann Baldwin). I believe most of them lived and in and around Kettering but have no further information.

I would really appreciate any information anyone has on any of the following people:
James Baldwin (1847-1921)
Ann Baldwin (nee Baker) (1852-1931)
ALGERNON BALDWIN (1889)
Emma Eliza Baldwin (1889)
Elizabeth Baldwin (1872)
William Henry Baldwin (1874)
George Baldwin (1876)
Sarah Ann Baldwin (1879)
Mary Jane Baldwin (1880)
Jemima Baldwin (1883)
James Baldwin (1885)
Kate Annie Baldwin (1887)
May Gertrude Baldwin (1891)

Thank you.

Daniel

Hello! I've just begun researching my Ashby family history and I hoped you all could offer some assistance.

My grandmother was Winifred Edith Ashby, from Kettering in Northants - she met my grandfather while he was stationed there during WWII. Here's what I've got so far:

- Winifred Edith Ashby (b. 9 NOV 1924) was the d/o Thomas William Ashby (b. 1891 in Kettering) and Edith Goodwin.

- Thomas William Ashby was the s/o Joseph Ashby (b. 1858 in Bugsbrook) and Jane ?. I've pulled the 1901 census records for Joseph and his family, but I won't include the rest of that information except to say that Thomas was one of twelve children (at the time of the census).

I would appreciate any relevant Ashby family info or words of wisdom you might be able to offer.

Help need a hand in trying to trace a Robert Edwards, and his family, have found him in the 1881 cen living at 18 Spring Lane, with his 5 children, and no wife, the census says Robert is a Widow, and the age of his first born is(Alfred) 1872, the last is Robert b1880. Have found him in the 1891 to, married to a Alice Tilson.
The 1871 cen does mention a Robert the right age, married to a Ann Edwards, and no children, living on Scarlenvell Terr, Northampton. She is from Leics, he from Northampton.
But there it all falls down as I am unable to find his marriage, or births of either of them, where they say they are born.
Knowlton in Northamptonshire

I am wondering if any readers are in the shire and can contact Tom P Knowlton in Towcester. Otherwise I will write him a letter but would like him to respond to this message so we can email. He gave a talk last year on the Towcester post office so I am hoping he has an interest in family history. We in the USA have started a dna test group in hopes of connecting with the English Knowltons, but we need some English to come forward and join. That is my general request. More specifically, I have been following the line of famous Knowlton brother gardeners from the 18th century named Thomas and John. John and his wife Elizabeth have memorials in the Castor church outside Peterborough. I know nothing about the line after the early 19th century. There are Knowltons on the census in the area throughout that century, but we do not know if the above line is related to Knowltons in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, and across country in Bristol. Yes, we have used the census, the BMD, and the IGI in our search.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with information about some of my ancestors who came from this area.
My great, great great grandfather was JAMES PERCIVAL born Irchester 24 Nov 1841. James appears to have been illegitimate for his marriage certificate states "supposed father GEORGE WORLEY". James seems to have taken his mother, Elizabeth's, maiden-name of Percival. James was a shoemaker and married HANNAH ALLEBONE (or ALLIBONE) born Irchester 1842. They had a son EDWARD ALLIBONE PERCIVAL born Irchester 20 June 1873. Edward married MARY ANN HANGER born Rushden 25 Sep 1873. They had three sons TED, JACK and HAROLD. JACK PERCIVAL, my grandfather, born Rushden 1905 married LORNA AGNES DOROTHY BOUGOURE. My Grandfather Jack emigrated to Australia.
Any help would be much appreciated as I've only just started tracing my family tree.
Wayne Percival, Brisbane, Australia

His parents I believe are Thomas Gadsby born abt 1836 Polackwater, Northamptonshire and Elizabeth Kingston born 1837 Stanford, Lincoln. Martha Ellis Hunter has parents William or John Hunter and Sarah Ann (don't know maiden name)who were both born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, Sarah Ann abt 1846 and Mr. Hunter abt 1847. Mr. Hunter's mother I believe is Mary Ann Ellis who's second marriage was to John Wiseman 1854 Luton. Mary Ann Wiseman died 1907 Peterbro'. Sarah Ann Hunter was still alive in Sept of 1908 Peterbro'. Can anyone help me with these families?

He was living in New York and was married to native New Yorker, Sarah E. West for about 3 years and had 2 young children by 1860. According to family tradition Isaac's surname came from a town in England. Could he have been born Isaac Kellam, the son of John Kellam (or some similar surname)? I wish to be in contact with anyone who knows of a John Skellham\\ Kellam, who had a son named Isaac born in 1830 in Northamptonshire.

Hunt family from Eydon, Northamptonshire

Does anyone know this family. The following information is from an old family bible. "Robert Hunt - His Book 1762"

Robert Hunt was born at Eydon in Northamptonshire in the year of our Lord 1731 of april 3. Frances the wife of Robert Hunt died ____ 1760 (1762?) and was buried Saint An____ graveyard.

Daniel, son of Robert and ______ Hunt _____176? in the Parish St ___there______ and died at Middleton, 21st of April, 1783 aged 19 years, thirteen days and was buried in Middleton church yard.

Martha Hunt, late wife of _____ Hunt died at ____ January 16th 1797 was buried their (sic) in the 50the year of her age.

Mary Hunt wife of Robert Hunt was delivered of a still born 20th of November 1808 at ____.

NOTE: I believe that the Mary Hunt, wfe of Robert Hunt, may have been Mary Lines and that they were married 1807 in Adderbury, Oxfordshire. I also believe that this Robert Hunt, born 1731, is a son of Timothy and Elizabeth Hunt who were married at Eydon in 1726. And I believe that this Timothy Hunt was a son of Daniel Hunt (born abt 1659 at Eydon) and Patience Perkins.

This bible came into my Lines family in 1818 when it was given to Richard Lines by Mary Wells. Richard Lines was born Jan 8, 1779 and married Ann Huggins (1778 - 1832). All of their children were baptized at Bodicote, Oxfordshire. I am wondering if this Mary Wells is Richard Lines' sister who was born about 1782 and if she perhaps married Robert Hunt, then a John Wells.

Any ideas or can anyone fill in some of the blanks which I cannot make out in the bible?

Joseph emigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1854.
Thanks
Brad Dunkley

Marriage record confusion

Hello, there was a George Hillyard whose marriage was registered in Hardingstoke 1851 but his wife's name does not appear on it. This is the civil reg. not the church record. Furthermore, to add to my confusion, their son William James Hillyard was born the following year in Pattishall and the names on the christening were George and George's MOTHER Charlotte. George's wife Jane Harrison was from Great Driffield Yorkshie and it appears that she registered a marriage there in 1854 without George's name. They would move to Canada shorty after and have more children. Is it possible that this union was counted twice
or perhaps the names simply could not be read properly?
Sorry for all the confusion, I hope someone can shed some light on this.
Thank you, Tom.
Anyone Local to Little Addington Here?

Hello from Canada,

I had an elusive Scottish born great uncle who spent about 15 years working a farm at Little Addington between 1893 - 1906, before moving his family on to Liverpool, where they planned to immigrate to North America ... only my great uncle went overseas ... the family remained in England, for as yet unknown reasons.

His name was George McMILLAN (1856 - 1930)& he is on the 1901 census at L. Addington with his family. It says 'Top End' ... now is that the farm name or just it's location? I would love to know anything about this farm (it was enumerated right before the post office on that census)& would really enjoy seeing pictures of it! Thank you very much!

Mary

Thomas would go on to marry Jane Swingler ( b. ?) on Feb 17 1801 Woodford, near Thrapston, and have a daughter, Dinah (b.

Hi,
I'm looking for info on William James Edwards, b. 1832, married to Elizabeth Cowley b. 1836. They were married Dec. 25, 1854 at the parish church of St. Sepulchre, Northampton. William's father's name was Edward Edwards and they lived on Bacliff Street. Elizabeth's father's name was Samuel Cowley and they lived at Cliff Row. Both fathers were shoemakers, as was William.

I'm trying to find out birth info for William and Elizabeth. I think Elizabeth may have been born in Northampton, and William in London, but can't find proof since both were born before civil registration. Also would like to know both mothers' names. Any help would be appreciated!
