Does anyone have information on the Clays of Blidworth Nottinghamshire? In particular George Clay 1767 and any link to Mathew Clay 1766.

Hi Susan, I am tracking the Smedley family and I have in the 1881 census Ada Clay (granddaughter) aged 16 at the home of James Smedley in Nottingham. I am not sure if these are my Smedley family, I can't find where my John Smedley came into Australia it appears in the mid to late 1860's. I am casting around in the UK trying to find a lead and this appears to be the most obvious at this stage.

Hi Annette,
My GGGrandfather is John Joseph SMEDLEY. He was born circa 1847 in Nottingham. He married my GGGrandmother, Emma Jane NORTON on 22/9/1868 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. He died on 31/3/1908 in Katoomba, NSW, Australia. I have a copy of their marriage certificate but it does not state his parents names. I also have a copy of his death certificate which also does not name his parents!! I have been searching the English Census and found a John SMEDLEY living with his parents James and Elizabeth in the 1851 and 1861 Census. This is the same family (I think!) that Ada Clay is living with in the 1881 Census.
After all this - is my John SMEDLEY your John SMEDLEY? I hope so because I have been coming up against dead-ends re John SMEDLEY.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Julie - Australia

Hi Julie, Yes we are on the same family. I have heaps on this family...my ancestor was James Frederick..which is your line from? I have contact with descendents of John Joseph, Harriett and Rita. We are all working together to find all we can about this family. Like you we think the family you found is ours but can not claim them without further primary sources...we also can't find the entry of John into Australia....I have all the birth certs
for their children also most of the death and marriage certs.
Am on a 2 month caravanning holiday to WA and stuck at Elliston SA west coast of Eyre Peninsula waiting for a gale to blow over..forecasting another couple of days.
I live in Cowra NSW where are you from? My email address is iapring@snoopacowra.com I am getting my mail through the internet,

Hoping to hear from you soon

Annette
