Can anyone help me to trace the Matthews family (James b 1778 and Robert b 1802) from Duns Tew in Oxfordshire. Any clues will be greatly appreciated.

The closest MATTHEWS with those first names in Duns Tew is a James baptised 1748 and Robert baptised 1772 (as Robard).

However there is a James MATTAS baptised 1779 and a Robert MATTAS baptised 1801 in Duns Tew.

Thank you for your reply. My search is for the parents oe Sarah Dean Matthews who married John Cave(b 1823 in Culworth, Northampton). The family trees I have seen give her mother as Sarah Matthews(b 1819) married to Robert Mathews(b 1801 in Duns Tew).
As Sarah was born in 1825 something has to be wrong here!

As an aside the Matthews is sometimes appearing as Mathews in the Census material.
Sarah Dean Matthews was born in Fencot,Oxfordshire.

I think the clue lies in Sarah's middle name "DEAN" and sure enough there is a marriage between a MATTHEWS and DEAN....

James MATHEWS (m) Sarah DEAN [btp] by Banns in St.Michaels, Oxford 6 July 1824. Wit: James WOODWARD and Hannah MATTHEWS.

In St.Peter of the East, Oxford there is this entry:

Sarah MATTHEWS baptised to James/Sarah (Baker of Ram Alley) 19 November 1824.

Matilda their second daughter is then baptised 1826 in Deddington and corresponds to the 1841 Census of Deddington:

Jas MATTHEWS 50yrs Baker Y
Sarah MATTHEWS 16yrs Y
Matilda MATTHEWS 14yrs Y

It seems to me they are married in Oxford where they must of been at least staying, had Sarah and as the family disappears, seemed to of moved to Deddington where Matilda is then born. This corresponds to Sarah stating she is from Deddington then Oxford in the census. Both James MATTHEWS in the city and Deddington are bakers by profession. I am assuming this is indeed one and the same family.

Regards,

Lyn.

Many thanks for your help in solving that mystery. I have been struggling with it for ages.

I don't have access to Oxfordshire files so any further clues about James Matthews or Sarah Dean would be greatly appreciated.

If it is easier for you to contact me by email I am at
michael@goodjohn.freeserve.co.uk

Once again many thanks for your help

Michael
